Elyon / "Most High" is a biblical designation for God whose semantics are obvious. Given the attestation of a deity Elyon in neighbouring cultures and the peculiarities of the references especially in the Pentateuch, the question arises as to what was expressed by the biblical use of Elyon for the God of ancient Israel.
