Der GKV-Spitzenverband: Rolle und Funktion im Neokorporatismus

ISR-Forschungsberichte

The project "Pathways of Homelessness in the City of Vienna" examines transitions between different phases and forms of precarious housing and homelessness. It analyses pathways into, through, and out of different phases of homelessness back into stable housing. It focuses on lived experiences of people who experienced homelessness and on transitions between different phases, to gain insights into living situations, personal needs, as well as emotional and social lifeworlds. Based on biographical interviews with persons who have experienced homelessness in their lifetime and have re-entered long-term, stable housing, the project develops a phase model of homelessness and precarious housing using the ETHOS Light Typology. The analysis yields policy recommendations that can support the work of housing-related social service organizations, prevent housing loss, and inform the design of relevant services.

Pfade der Obdach- und Wohnungslosigkeit in Wien

A giant of the political left, Rosa Luxemburg is one of the foremost minds in the canon of revolutionary socialist thought. But she was much more than just a thinker. She made herself heard in a world inimical to the voices of strong-willed women. She overcame physical infirmity and the prejudice she faced as a Jew to become an active revolutionary whose philosophy enriched every corner of an incredibly productive and creative life—her many friendships, her sexual intimacies, and her love of science, nature and art. Always opposed to the First World War, when others on the German left were swept up on a tide of nationalism, she was imprisoned and murdered in 1919 fighting for a revolution she knew to be doomed. In this beautifully drawn work of graphic biography, writer and artist Kate Evans has opened up her subject’s intellectual world to a new audience, grounding Luxemburg’s ideas in the realities of an inspirational and deeply affecting life.

'Compelling and compassionate' Sadiq Khan 'Solutions-focused authorship at its best' Andrew Roberts 'A how-to book with inspired answers to our urgent questions' Lyse Doucet 'Read this book as an antidote to fatalism and gloom' Robert Peston 'Closely reported, surprising and, above all, hopeful' Jonathan Freedland At a time when democracies seem paralyzed by fear and populations are turning inward, award-winning journalist John Kampfner travels to ten countries confronting our shared challenges with bravery and imagination. - Taiwan's health system achieves 90% patient satisfaction at a fraction of the cost of the NHS. - Moroccan solar panels in the Sahara produce enough clean energy to power two million homes. - Estonia has transformed itself into a digital pioneer in a single generation - becoming the world's first fully digital government where 97.6% of citizens access state services online. - Costa Rica has tripled its economy while doubling its forest cover, proving that green policies can pay direct dividends. What unites these countries, and more, is a refusal to accept that difficult problems are unsolvable. The places showing true innovation are often those with their backs against the wall - not wealthy nations assuming they have all the answers. Braver New World is an urgent reminder that solutions exist. The question is whether we have the courage to learn. 'A persuasive and imaginative argument against the gloom of our times' Bronwen Maddox 'Seminal... A rallying cry for radical, pragmatic optimism; democratic and institutional courage' Shashi Tharoor 'A thought-provoking read, full of real ideas that could make Britain a better place' Lindsey Hilsum 'A must-read for Keir Starmer and anyone hoping to take over from him' The Rt Hon Jeremy Hunt

The Countries Daring to Do Things Others Won’t

Braver New World

Among the epoch-defining issues of our time - war and peace, climate change, demographic shifts, and disruptive technologies such as AI - it is clear that our health care system, too, must undergo fundamental transformation. If we cling to old structures, soaring costs and workforce shortages alone will soon push the existing system to its limits. Germany's health care institutions, policymakers, and citizens are now called upon to take pragmatic and effective steps toward revitalizing our health care system - guided by the major drivers of change, yet always within the bounds of what is feasible. With realistic optimism and decades of experience in health care, the authors outline concrete, achievable steps in a highly practical roadmap supported by more than 70 accessible graphics. Their groundbreaking proposals show how the German health care system can become future-ready while still remaining affordable. The urgency has never been greater.

Revitalizing the German system

The Future of Health Care

Can one political leader change the course of history? Should CEOs be given big bonuses when a company performs well? Will firing a coach actually change the fortunes of the team? What does a religion's success owe to a charismatic founder? In a fresh take on the interplay of power, character and success, world-renowned historian and bestselling author Jared Diamond argues that great leaders are so much more than either heroic exceptions or products of circumstance. Looking at natural experiments in four different spheres - history, business, sport and religion - Diamond asks under which conditions is a leader most likely to make a difference and why. Drawing on examples of iconic leaders - from Botswana president Seretse Khama to environmentalist Rachel Carson to legendary UCLA basketball coach John Wooden - Diamond shows us how effectiveness is determined by a range of complex interrelated factors, from resources to geography, culture to technology. Profits, Prophets, Coaches and Kings is a thought-provoking assessment of when leaders can bring about effective change, when they don't, and perhaps whether we need them at all.

An in-depth exploration of the network of agencies involved in policing child pornography—and what the future of security and care looks like. Facing the Child investigates the technocratic expertise in the policing of child sexual abuse material (CSAM). Mitali Thakor argues that CSAM has come to be framed as primarily a digital problem, to be resolved digitally, thereby unleashing a new form of corporatized policing helmed by global technology companies. Ambitious in scope, this multi-sited global ethnography draws on 4 years of original fieldwork and interviews with technology companies in the US, the United Nations in Bangkok, Thai and Dutch NGOs, and law enforcement in the US and the Netherlands. The book argues that in the 2010s, a network of technology companies, NGOs, and law enforcement created the notion of a “virtual child” in need of techno-solutionist saving to justify a vast expansion of surveillance technologies. The book examines how pervasive myths of child abuse online were exploited to serve the aims of seemingly disparate groups, from Christian neo-abolitionists to NGOs conducting virtual sting operations. It is this complex relationship between the care and securitization needed to fix the child victim as an object of data, concern, and rescue that the book explores.

Drawing on new data and case analyses, Ryan J. Rebe provides substantial evidence that justices vote their partisan preferences on election law cases. By focusing specifically on election law, Rebe reveals a consistent pattern of partisanship on the Court. The findings controvert popular perceptions of non-biased decision-making and notions of fundamental fairness. The aggregate analysis shows that justices vote along party-lines in a majority of election law cases, and consensus-building is rare when there is a contentious electoral issue at stake. Exploring topics such as gerrymandering, campaign finance, voter ID laws, and presidential immunity, Rebe demonstrates that Supreme Court decisions often conflict with principles of stare decisis, originalism, and judicial restraint. Rebe also conducts a content analysis of the most controversial election law cases of the past twenty-five years, including Crawford v. Marion County, Citizens United v. FEC, Shelby County v. Holder, and Trump v. United States. In doing so, the book provides a thorough overview of over two decades of election law cases and sheds light on the ways these cases have reshaped America's electoral institutions.

The Era of Political Partisanship on the U.S. Supreme Court

The Partisan Court

The global market in money – housed in the offshore ‘shadow’ banking system – holds $217 trillion in financial assets and operates beyond the reach of any nation’s taxman. Asset managers, private equity firms, and pension and sovereign wealth funds scoop up the world’s savings for investment and manage them as they choose, unaccountable to politicians or the citizens who elect them. In this brilliant, accessible and incisive introduction to the murky world of globalized finance, Ann Pettifor links the activities of remote mobile financial markets to both the cost-of-living and climate crises. In an insane global casino, bankers are gambling with our future. When we foot the bill, no one but a few economists understands what has happened. The result is volatile, unpredictable and uncontrollable speculation in global commodities, pension, energy, and housing. Pettifor argues that societies and governments can take back control of the global financial system. We have done it before and can do it again. Indeed, it is imperative that we do so if we are to manage the twin threats of climate breakdown and biosphere collapse.

The gritty memoir of a former US Marine and Presidential Guard, who, after being unjustly held and abused in a Russian gulag for three years and freed in a high-profile prisoner exchange, seeks revenge against his former Russian captors by volunteering to fight in Ukraine. In August 2019, Trevor Reed, a former US Marine and Presidential Guard, was arrested in Russia on false, trumped-up charges. For three years, he was imprisoned in the infamous Russian gulag, where the inhumane treatment threatened his health so severely his parents and the U.S. government feared for his life. After losing roughly fifty pounds from his already trim body, he was released in a 2022 prisoner swap that dominated headlines. Most people would go home, try to move on with their lives, and forget the horrors they endured. But not Trevor Reed.Reed trained relentlessly to regain his health and strength, aiming to volunteer in Ukraine to fight the Russians and seek revenge. Having faced Russian cruelty up close, he knew what the Ukrainians were experiencing, and he knew he could help them. Just six months after being released from prison, Reed smuggled himself into Ukraine. He fought in one of the hottest fronts of the war . . . until one dark night a comrade stepped on a land mine. Reed almost lost his leg and his life, barely making it home to Texas alive.A harrowing, on-the-ground account of the war in Ukraine, Retribution is the story of one man’s dogged persistence and commitment to justice, regardless of the personal cost.
