This handbook is a practical guide to the identification and interpretation of aquatic plant remains recovered from sediments. These remains, or macrofossils, can be seeds or fruits or other plant organs such as leaves or stems. The main body of the handbook is made up of a series of fact sheets for each aquatic plant taxon and its macrofossil type(s) known for northern Europe. Many aquatic species have distributions beyond Europe, so the handbook has a world-wide application. Each taxon is illustrated by about 3 photographs of seeds, fruits, and sometimes vegetative parts, together with notes on life form and ecology, present distribution (with a link to a distribution map), and late-Quaternary history if known. In addition to the descriptions, the handbook provides introductory chapters about aquatic ecosystems, palaeolimnology, and the nature and importance of plant macrofossil analysis. These will inform readers about the opportunities and limitations of plant macrofossil identification for research in palaeoecology, archaeology, and freshwater biology.&nbsp;

Seeds and Fruits of Aquatic Plants of Northern Europe - A Handbook

Die Natur- und Umweltgeschichte betont zumeist die ganz langen Linien zeitlicher Entwicklungen oder die rasanten Veränderungen seit den 1950er Jahren. Der Zäsurcharakter des 19. Jahrhunderts, das eine Schlüsselepoche auch mit Blick auf den Umgang mit der Natur gewesen ist, gerät dabei allzu oft aus dem Blick. Aber gerade in diesem Säkulum vollzieht sich - nicht zuletzt im Zuge der an Fahrt gewinnenden Industrialisierung - eine Zeitenwende in der Umweltgeschichte. Die damit einhergehenden Modernisierungserfahrungen führten schon damals dialektisch zur Rückbesinnung auf die Natur. Naturausbeutung und Naturverehrung, die Eroberung der Natur und die Furcht vor ihrer Übermacht standen daher in engem Zusammenhang. Die Beiträge dieses interdisziplinär angelegten Bandes nehmen diese Phänomene und Wechselwirkungen in den Blick und erzählen das bemerkenswerte 19. Jahrhundert noch einmal neu aus einem anderen Blickwinkel; zugleich verdeutlichen sie, wie viel unsere Gegenwart mit dem 19. Jahrhundert verbindet.

Hong was previously a professor at the Research Centre for Sociological Theory and Methodology of Renmin University of China, Vice-President of the Chinese Sociological Association. He has published books such as Ecological Modernization and Civilizational Transformation (2014), Social Base of Environmentally Friendly Society (2012).Yechao Fan, PhD in Sociology, is an associate professor at the Department of Sociology, School of Ethnology and Sociology, Minzu University of China. Fan is mainly engaged in teaching and research in the fields of environmental sociology and social theory.
