A Comprehensive Approach

This book is about our quest over the centuries, from ancient Greece onwards, for pattern in the rich diversity of life. How did our ancestors think that living creatures first came to be, each fitting so well to its specific environment? Does biodiversity have a purpose? What biodiversity exists, beyond what our eyes can see? Do dragons and unicorns exist? How did the world begin, how did order emerge and were there several Creation events?Reproduction resembles Creation in that order appears out of nothing, form out of matter. Can different reproduction modes increase biodiversity? Why sexual reproduction? Can&nbsp;living creatures, and hence biodiversity, arise from non-living dust? How do embryos develop, from a featureless mass into an orderly, organised living body? Does embryonic development dictate diversity and do species ever go extinct? What is a soul? Do animals have souls? Do souls migrate, between man and animal? Does inheritance of acquired characters create biodiversity? Does diversity form an orderly ladder from plants through animals to Man, or perhaps orderly circles-within-circles?These questions and many others have been central to our culture’s overall view of nature, from ancient times onwards. This book, presenting the urge to understand overall pattern in the diversity of life throughout history, takes a broad approach. It links theories of classification with those of reproduction, embryology, theology and (eventually) evolution, as they developed from ancient days onwards, over 2400 years. Over 250 illustrations accompany the text, many taken from the ancient, original treatises, many others painted especially for this book, to present specific animals or ideas.This comprehensive view of the study of biodiversity will appeal to zoology lecturers and students, biology teachers and amateur naturalists, as well as to lecturers and learners of history, of theology; and of course, to anybody seeking to broaden horizons.

This book questions the&nbsp;physics of diversity—why diversity happens by itself, why it is a phenomenon that has a mind of its own, and why it opposes any effort of being shoehorned into a few distinct (antagonistic) classes.&nbsp; Physics is not opinion; physical facts can be put to the test. The book begins with fundamentals of design evolution in nature—movement, time direction, freedom to change, size, shape, structure. It continues with pictorial examples of distinct evolutionary domains of the most common type: people, animals, athletes, rhythms, technologies, and universities. The features of diversity shared so clearly by so many dissimilar domains empower the biosphere with the design that sustains it and assures its future. An integral part of nature’s design is the merit system. This way the&nbsp;readers&nbsp;discover&nbsp;on their own&nbsp;that diversity emerges naturally, inevitably, steadfastly, and beneficially. Die Natur- und Umweltgeschichte betont zumeist die ganz langen Linien zeitlicher Entwicklungen oder die rasanten Veränderungen seit den 1950er Jahren. Der Zäsurcharakter des 19. Jahrhunderts, das eine Schlüsselepoche auch mit Blick auf den Umgang mit der Natur gewesen ist, gerät dabei allzu oft aus dem Blick. Aber gerade in diesem Säkulum vollzieht sich - nicht zuletzt im Zuge der an Fahrt gewinnenden Industrialisierung - eine Zeitenwende in der Umweltgeschichte. Die damit einhergehenden Modernisierungserfahrungen führten schon damals dialektisch zur Rückbesinnung auf die Natur. Naturausbeutung und Naturverehrung, die Eroberung der Natur und die Furcht vor ihrer Übermacht standen daher in engem Zusammenhang. Die Beiträge dieses interdisziplinär angelegten Bandes nehmen diese Phänomene und Wechselwirkungen in den Blick und erzählen das bemerkenswerte 19. Jahrhundert noch einmal neu aus einem anderen Blickwinkel; zugleich verdeutlichen sie, wie viel unsere Gegenwart mit dem 19. Jahrhundert verbindet.

Human Rights, the Rule of Law and Exploitation in the Postcolony: Blood Minerals examines how the legal frameworks of the global economy position the inhabitants of the postcolonial south in a legal and moral position that facilitates economic exploitation, juridical regulation, and dominion over land and resources. Drawing on several exemplary situations - from Africa (the DRC and Nigeria), Asia (India), the Pacific region (Papua New Guinea and Australia) and South America (Ecuador) - Blood Minerals describes how colonial rule operates in a violent and destructive cycle of mineral extraction. It shows how the populations of the postcolonial global south are stripped of juridical personality and become persona nullius, as the legal-economic frameworks of globalization enact colonial rule by declaring the lands that are to be exploited as void of law.

Pursuing a new global approach, this unique book provides an updated review of the geology of Iberia and its continental margins from a geodynamic perspective. Owing to its location close to successive plate margins, Iberia has played a pivotal role in the geodynamic evolution of the Gondwanan, Rheic, Pangea, Tethys s.l. and Eurasian plates over the last 600 Ma of Earth’s history. The geological record begins with the amalgamation of Gondwana in the Neoproterozoic, followed by the rifting and spread of the Rheic ocean; its demise, which led to the amalgamation of Pangea in the late Paleozoic; the rifting and spread of several arms of the Neotethys ocean in the Mesozoic Era; and concludes with their ongoing closure, which was responsible for the Alpine orogeny. The significant advances made in the past 20 years have attracted considerable international research interest in the geology of the Iberian Peninsula.  This volume focuses in the Cadomian orogenic cycle and the oldest geological records in the Iberian Peninsula.&nbsp;
