An Interdisciplinary Assessment

Research Paper (postgraduate) from the year 2026 in the subject Guidebooks - School, Education, Pedagogy, , course: Education Management and Administration, language: English, abstract: Zambia's rural households face recurrent climate shocks, thin markets, and persistent poverty, which heighten vulnerability and limit productive investment. In this context, work¿conditional social protection programmes such as Food¿for¿Work (FFW) and Cash¿for¿Work (CFW) aim to stabilise consumption while building community assets. Yet evidence on their comparative effectiveness remains fragmented and sensitive to market conditions, seasonality, and implementation quality.
This thesis assesses FFW and CFW in Zambia, examining targeting accuracy, delivery efficiency, asset quality, and cost¿effectiveness, alongside impacts on food security, diversification, savings, debt, assets, labour allocation, and subjective well¿being. Special attention is given to heterogeneity by market access, timing within agricultural calendars, gender, and shock exposure. A mixed¿methods design combines a three¿wave household panel with qualitative process data. Propensity score matching and inverse probability weighting construct comparable groups, followed by difference¿in¿differences and fixed¿effects models; instrumental variables address potential endogeneity. Standardised indicators including HDDS, FCS, CSI, PMT scores, and Simpson Index guide measurement. 
Results show both modalities reduce negative coping and stabilise consumption. CFW yields greater improvements in dietary diversity and flexibility where markets and payment systems function well. FFW performs better in remote areas, during price spikes, and in lean seasons by guaranteeing staple supplies. Timing is critical: pre¿lean¿season transfers reduce distress sales and improve input access. CFW supports small enterprise entry, savings, and livestock gains; FFW protects schooling, meal frequency, and labour productivity. Both reduce high¿interest borrowing, though via different channels. 
Implementation quality strongly shapes outcomes. FFW faces logistical risks, while CFW is vulnerable to payment delays and inflation. Cost¿effectiveness varies by geography, with CFW cheaper in connected areas and FFW preferable where cash conversion is costly. Gender effects show increased autonomy under CFW and reduced budgeting stress under FFW, moderated by childcare and worksite conditions.

As climate change accelerates coastal erosion and inundation, traditional assumptions suggest these entitlements could shrink or disappear, with profound implications for access to marine resources. Sea-Level Rise and the Legal Stability of Maritime Zones explores the development of a new legal perspective that supports the preservation of maritime zones despite rising sea levels. This book advances a contemporary interpretation of UNCLOS, drawing on a broad spectrum of state practice as reflected in international declarations and domestic legislation. Through systematic analysis of this evidence within the framework of treaty interpretation, Frances Anggadi consolidates the doctrinal basis for the view that the preservation of maritime zones may be achieved through interpreting existing provisions of UNCLOS, rather than requiring a treaty amendment. As the first comprehensive work to conceptualize this emerging perspective, it offers a clear and principled framework for safeguarding maritime zones, demonstrating how international law can evolve to address global environmental challenges.

This has made regional security and stability more strategically important than the already high level it had attained through geography. In order to understand North America’s growing strategic significance, we need to take a closer look at U.S. policy within the region. In this book, Paul Ashby examines how U.S. now considers North America, defined regionally as the countries within the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA), as a distinct and strategically important economic and security space. Through closer examination of several policy programs with both Canada and Mexico, Ashby demonstrates how the U.S. is actively constructing a regional, North American security architecture based around, but also operating within NAFTA’s perimeters. He contends that increased regional economic integration and important interdependencies spurred by NAFTA are driving, and that these were given far greater impetus by the events and regional impacts of 9/11. North America’s growing strategic importance to the U.S. has encouraged it to take regional security more seriously. Armoring NAFTA, or Abandoning it?

Contemporary U.S. Approaches to North American Regionalism

This book assembles critical contributions on the work of TRS Allan, the Professor Emeritus of Jurisprudence and Public Law at the University of Cambridge, whose leading work in legal and constitutional theory spans almost 45 years. Allan has charted a distinctive path for legal, political, and moral theory and practice and has become a highly significant figure in the UK and in common law/parliamentary systems around the world. His ideas challenge established opinions about constitutional law within these systems as well as established views about the rule of law from more abstract or philosophical perspectives. Allan claims that law and morality find an inherent connection through the rule of law. He argues that there is a connection that flourishes in common law jurisdictions because although Parliament has sovereign legislative powers, its laws gain their full legal meaning only through an interpretive lens. This lens seeks to reconcile sovereign will with legality's basic moral ideals, especially the idea that law must be general and capable of guiding behaviour and thus respectful of the equality and dignity of its subjects. Allan's scholarship is powerful yet controversial, and it has inspired 20 leading scholars from the UK, Canada, Australia and New Zealand to engage with the central themes of his work. By doing so, the contributors help to make that work accessible to a new generation of scholars and students. They also provide a timely framework for engaging in the most important challenges facing our democracies today: how our legal systems do, or do not, honour and respect democracy and therefore legislative sovereignty while at the same time honouring and respecting the rule of law, or the 'Promise of Legality'.

Rural development is one of the most complex and topical research areas, requiring interdisciplinary approaches and the proposal of multifunctional, sustainable economic development models grounded in both theoretical and empirical studies. Such studies emphasize socio-economic indicators that can improve policy approaches to analysis, evaluation, and decision-making. Shifts in rural development policies-from a sectoral to a multisectoral perspective and, more recently, to a territorial approach that embraces local community development-highlight the need for socio-economic indicators related to rural development opportunities generated by various domains (e.g., agriculture, tourism). Rural areas are among those experiencing the most profound transformations in recent years, driven by demographic challenges, economic fluctuations and uncertainties, environmental risks, and the impacts of climate change. These factors significantly increase population vulnerability worldwide in rural regions. Population growth and resource scarcity or depletion become even more acute when access to education, financial resources, or transportation infrastructure is limited by unbalanced investments and inadequate planning resulting from deficient administrative systems. Conversely, the rapid development of digital technologies-including smart agriculture, smart household technologies, and digital systems of education and administration-demonstrates clear opportunities for growth and development while improving resource accessibility for rural regions and among more vulnerable demographic groups.

Corporations are being given control over water, healthcare, housing, public transportation, child welfare services, aged care, and much else. Privatization is promoted by international financial institutions, consulting firms, and development actors as the answer to public finances devastated by the very tax cuts insistently pushed by these groups. Their pitch is based upon a mythology that extols the virtues of an idealized market while ignoring the heavy human rights costs incurred. Building on the latest evidence and on specially commissioned case studies, this book shows how the touted 'efficiency' of the private sector is often predicated on higher charges and/or reduced services, destructive employment practices, and the highly predictable exclusion of many users. Privatization generally costs states more money, marginalizes democratic decision-making, and transforms citizens from rights-holders into customers while sidelining accountability. The authors develop an approach designed to enable human rights actors, including courts, UN treaty monitoring bodies, and NGOs to move beyond their longstanding agnosticism towards privatization. It starts with a presumption that privatization is inherently retrogressive in human rights terms.
