The wider project of which this book is a part, set out to investigate the constitutional structures of the EU Member States. As part of this comparative enterprise this work sheds light on the intricate interconnections which exist between Member State governments and their national parliaments. Although in many cases governments only exist and function as a consequence of parliamentary support, it is the executive that is usually the focal point of political life and that sets the nation's political course and drives forward its legislative agenda. Arguably, this perception is based on the political customs that surround government/parliament relations rather than the constitutional fundament upon which they are built. This book therefore provides an in-depth analysis of how these two institutions, the executive and the legislature, relate to one another from a constitutional law as well as a constitutional politics perspective. To do so this the work takes a comparative approach to examining how electoral laws, government formation processes, legislative practices, executive prerogatives, and the scrutiny of EU legislation shape the role governments and parliaments play and how they interact across the EU's Member States.

This interdisciplinary collection illuminates the religious roots of marriage and divorce in Europe and their divergent history from the 18th century to the present day. The 18th century was a pivotal period in terms of how the rules governing marriage and divorce were determined, with authority to set and adjudicate on rules shifting from religious authorities to the state. This book evaluates these historical developments, paying particular attention to the waxing or waning influence of religious institutions, values, or norms and whether further suggestions for reform have been made. Volume 1 of A History of Family Law in Europe examines how, and the extent to which, marriage formation and dissolution are regulated in the written texts of the Catholic, Protestant, and Orthodox traditions. The contributors analyse the respective traditions' teachings on marriage formation, marital impediments, and dissolubility, including these traditions' views as to the socially binding character of these teachings. This open access book critically analyses a wide range of consumer law issues generated or exacerbated by the Internet of Things. The Internet of Things challenges many of the dichotomies which have shaped current laws: goods-services, hardware-software, tangible-intangible, online-offline. The book focuses on 4 specific challenges: things-as-service, liability, bricking of physical devices through software control, and the potential for enhanced personalisation, especially for digital assistants. The chapters analyse specific applications such as smart homes, connected cars, and consumer wearables with a view to providing innovative solutions to the new challenges posed by the Internet of Things, and to steer the development of the Internet of Things in a fairer direction. As well as offering an important analysis of the potential for smart consumer laws in the Internet of Things, the book also provides important insights into the growing divergence between Germany's and the UK's consumer laws since Brexit. How apprenticeship shaped the English economy Apprenticeship dominated training and skill formation in early modern Europe. Years spent learning from a skilled master were a nearly universal experience for young workers in crafts and trade. In England, when apprenticeship reached its peak, as many as a third of all teenage males would serve and learn as apprentices. In The Market for Skill, Patrick Wallis shows how apprenticeship helped reshape the English economy. Some historians see apprenticeship as a key ingredient in the industrial revolution; others agree with Adam Smith in seeing it as wasteful and conservative. Wallis shows that neither of these perspectives is entirely accurate. He offers a new account of apprenticeship and the market for skill in England, analyzing the records of hundreds of thousands of individual apprentices to tell the story of how apprenticeship worked and how it contributed to the transformation of England. Wallis details the activities of apprentices and masters, the strategies of ambitious parents, the interventions of guilds and the decisions of town officials. He shows how the system of early modern apprenticeship contributed to the growth of cities, the movement of workers from farms to manufacturing and the spread of new technologies and productive knowledge. In this groundbreaking study, Wallis argues that apprenticeship succeeded precisely because it was a flexible institution which allowed apprentices to change their minds and exit contracts early. Apprenticeship provided a vital channel for training that families could trust and that was accessible to most young people, whatever their background.
