It looks at the occupations of investors and identifies a major contribution by many with no direct connection to shipping or the sea other than living close to it. In effect, because of the lack of local banking, shares in shipping became something akin to a local, tradeable, currency. It also looks at how registers of shipping can be a fruitful source for family historians.

Bitcoin, Ethereum, Uniswap or Tether are not just digitals currencies. Bitcoin is pure law. Since the emergence of the blockchain, it is possible to regulate ourselves in a decentralized, private way, with a law that is digital, self-regulating and self-executing. 

 Likewise, states, elites and official organizations repeat over and over again the same message from various platforms: Bitcoin is unregulated, it is only good for dirty business, it is merely speculative, etc. While we listen to these slogans, the price of Bitcoin continues to rise, unstoppable.
 
 We are witnessing the birth of a new law: internet law. Every era has its own legal system. Property law arose out of the settlement of agricultural societies. Commercial law was born in the Middle Ages. Corporate law flourished in the 17th century, thanks to the maritime mercantile business. Labour law appeared among the assembly lines of the factories of the Industrial Revolution. Digital laws, such as Bitcoin, are those of internet jurisdiction.
 
 Internet technology allows us to be sovereign, to issue digital laws in a decentralized way, and to organize ourselves through new institutions. It is our responsibility to seek social and legal solutions in line with the internet revolution. This is the message that Bitcoin gives us: let's not leave in the hands of distrustful third parties what we can solve from the community itself. This book reveals how the formation of the Chinese socialist system in the 1950s dramatically transformed the nation’s economy, and charts how the newly established economic system functioned during the planned economy period (1949-1978), through focusing on Shanghai, which had served as the center of China’s modern economy since the latter half of the nineteenth century. Drawing on the rich historical primary sources of the Shanghai Municipal Archives, this study examines the impact of the institutional change wrought by the introduction of the socialist system on Shanghai’s economy, through a careful comparison with the economic structure before 1949. Moreover, it also explores the distinctive features of the Chinese socialist system, first and foremost the relationship between local governments and local businesses that came about through the socialist transformation of private enterprise, by analyzing Shanghai’s fiscal structure and a series of key industries, including the textile, machinery, rubber processing, cement, and power industries. This historical study proffers a new understanding of the long-term economic history of modern China across the pivotal 1949 and 1978 divides and sheds light on the origin of what has come to be known as "socialism with Chinese characteristics" today.
