This book explores the history and evolution of Australia’s steel industry. In the late 19th and early 20th centuries, the creation of a large, technologically advanced steel sector was widely seen as essential for economic development, providing vital inputs for railways, shipping, engineering, and construction. While new materials such as plastics, aluminium, and concrete have since taken centre stage, steel once stood at the heart of industrial progress.In the Australian context, the steel industry became closely linked with Broken Hill Proprietary Limited (BHP), for decades the country’s largest private corporation and long identified as the “Big Australian.” BHP’s exit from steelmaking in 2002 marked not just a corporate turning point but also reflected the broader transformation of the Australian economy, where mining increasingly overshadowed manufacturing.Yet, the story of steel in Australia is not merely one of decline. This book examines how the industry endured through profound shifts in the national and global economy, overcoming challenges and adapting to survive, even prosper, through the late 20th and early 21st centuries. He has taught at the University of Swaziland, University of Ghana and the University of KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa and supervised 25 PhD and 40 M.Phil. students.

This is the first book to present a new approach of institutional design as an evolutionary applied policy based on coherent conceptualization and methodology, and to study the actuality and implications of diversifying real/virtual community currencies. In contrast to a de facto standard theory, an institutional ecosystem can be composed of various institutions that continue to coexist with changing relative frequencies. In this view, diversified monetary institutions with local rules are feasible and realistic. Community currencies are worldwide attempts to redress such problems as financial instability, chronic stagnation, and decline of communities caused by globalization of the economy. Considering those alternative movements as a new type of policy, "evolutionist institutional design", this book clarifies the feasibility and significance of community currencies in the current era of globalization. The book also provides a better understanding than mainstream approaches of such platform institutions as money that determine fundamental means of cognition and action of interacting agents. Money is a symbolically generalized communication medium in the mesodomain that mediates between socioeconomic performance and patterns in the macrodomain and motives and cognitive frameworks in the microdomain. Conventional national systems of money and finance are platform institutions that determine basic replicators for a capitalistic market economy to evolve. In contrast, community currencies conveying both economic and social/cultural values are distinct platform institutions that are expected to endogenously change such basic replicators in outer and inner institutions for agents to a noncapitalistic market economy. These currencies are considered target institutions for "media design" in the framework of evolutionist institutional design.

Originally published in 1967, this book provides a detailed survey of economic events from the early 1950s to the late 1960s. It provides an excellent source of reference on economic policy issues and will also be invaluable as a textbook of mid-20th century economic history. Part 1 discusses demand management, the balance of payments and regional development before 1961. The authors stress the social and administrative aspects of Britain's mal du siècle. A turning point came in 1961 when the Conservatives set up the National Economic Development Council. This experiment in 'indicative planning' and the changes introduced by Labour after 1964 are described in Part 2. Despite short-term demand mismanagement by successive governments, 'indicative planning' has made it possible to introduce a number of constructive new measures, in particular prices and incomes policy, regional development and the modernization of economic structures to each of which the book devotes a chapter.
