This book presents a constructive exploration of the dilemmas the EU faces in regulating the risks of modern biotechnology. 

It comprehensively examines the current European framework applicable to the marketing of GMOs (genetically modified organisms), and its iterative reforms, in order to assess the regulatory character of the governance system in this controversial policy field.
 
The author situates the problems of the EU GMO regime in the broader context of 'post-state' regulation and discusses them in the light of some of the governance theories that were developed to respond in part to the dilemmas of risk regulation. The book contains analyses of the following issues: the EU laws pertinent to GM products; the approval procedures for placing GMOs on the market; the post-approval control system of commercialised products, as well as the respective judicial interpretations of the EU Court of Justice. The evaluation of the developed governance solutions is also presented.

The examination of the GMO governance reveals that the regime embodies different regulatory modes introduced by the EU which are combined in various forms in a way that frequently influences the adequacy of the adopted measures. The conclusion stemming from these findings suggests that the most appropriate solution for GMO policy in the EU is a reflexive and revisable combination of various regulatory approaches by policy-makers which will allow for the enforcement of their functions and the accommodation of different, often contradictory, policy needs.

This book is the first comprehensive academic treatment of the International Covenant on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights (ICESCR) and employment rights, which has a global vocation demonstrated by having been ratified by 173 States since it was adopted in 1966. Workers' rights need protection and reinforcement. To achieve this aim, international human rights standards can play an important role. The ICESCR is the most important global UN instrument in this respect. It covers a wide range of employment rights, including the right to strike, and has global application. But it is not sufficiently developed and used, and national implementation often needs improvement. Part 1 of the book analyses general issues related to the Covenant, such as context, development, challenges, influences at the global and regional levels, interpretation and procedural elements. Part 2 deals with the specific provisions which are directly linked to the employment relation. The book is based on a thorough analysis, mainly, but not exclusively, of the case law of the Committee on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights (CESCR), that is monitoring the national implementation of the Covenant. Together, the chapters in this book will empower academics and practitioners in labour law to find answers to relevant and practical problems in order to better enforce and improve workers' rights. The book is the result of a project by the 'Transnational Trade Union Rights' experts Network (TTUR), linked to the European Trade Union Institute (ETUI).

This book offers an analysis of how the European Court of Human Rights engages with identity and emotion, revealing both the promise and the limitations of human rights law in addressing the complexities of human experience. The book explores how human rights law, often framed as universal and abstract, responds to deeply personal questions of identity, belonging, and emotional impact. Based on a systematic study of over 3,300 judgments, the book shows how the European Court of Human Rights has increasingly made identity central to its reasoning - particularly in cases involving sexuality, ethnicity, and family life. In these areas, the Court acknowledges how state actions shape emotions such as fear, humiliation, and dignity. Yet, in other domains - migration, religion, professional life - the Court avoids emotional engagement, leading to troubling inconsistencies. The book argues that when emotions are excluded from legal reasoning, individuals are reduced to formal entities, stripped of depth and interiority. Combining doctrinal analysis with insights from social theory and psychology, the book presents a new framework for understanding how emotions and identity interact with law. It traces the evolution of identity references across categories and highlights the Court's uneven treatment of emotional harm. This timely and original contribution speaks to legal scholars, practitioners, and theorists interested in human rights, identity politics, and the emotional dimensions of law. A Sentimentalist Analysis of Human Rights

Identity and Emotions at the European Court of Human Rights

This book delves into the legal and labour history of the Hashemite Kingdom of Iraq to explore the role international law and its institutions played in Iraq's state formation. Focusing on a turbulent period in global and Middle East history, it shows how the case of Iraq became a laboratory for experimentation with the concept of sovereignty by the Permanent Mandates Commission of the League of Nations in Geneva. This resulted in the development of a doctrine of 'semiperipheral sovereignty' to justify Iraq's independence from the Mandate process. This novel doctrine and its operation within the provisions of the 1930 Anglo-Iraq Treaty ensured the maintenance of British dominance over Iraq, especially to safeguard the extraction and transportation of its valuable oil resources to Western markets. The book traces how this legal doctrine impacted the everyday lives of working class Iraqis. It explores the governance of the extraterritorial spaces of capitalist accumulation and labour exploitation, in particular the Iraq Petroleum Company oil fields, the Iraq State Railways and the Port of Basra. It goes on to detail how the oil, railway and port workers led by the Iraqi Communist Party effectively organised themselves into a nationalist revolutionary labour movement. They waged an anti-colonial struggle against these imperial legal structures to improve their lot, leading up to the 1948 Wathba, the 1953 Intifada, and ultimately the July Revolution of 1958, which upended the British-sponsored monarchy. Spanning various international archives and Arabic primary source materials, this book offers an example of a social, legal and labour history written from below, centering ordinary working peoples' agency in the historiography of international law. Drawing on Third World Approaches to International Law (TWAIL) and Marxist methodologies, it emphasises the significance of the semi-periphery in the making of the international legal order.
