Der nicht ganz vollständig überlieferte Heliand aus dem 9. Jahrhundert erzählt in annähernd 6.000 Versen das Leben Jesu. Er ist der umfangreichste erhaltene Text in Stabreimen und bildet zusammen mit Fragmenten einer Genesis-Dichtung den zentralen Teil der altniederdeutschen Literaturüberlieferung. Die zweisprachige Studienausgabe bietet beide Texte zusammen mit einer textnahen Übertragung ins Neuhochdeutsche.

Die erste Einführung in die Sprache und Literatur des Mittelniederdeutschen verknüpft literarhistorische Darstellung und sprachliche Beschreibung mit dem Ziel, eine umfassende und bewusste Lektürekompetenz zu fördern. Besonderheiten ihrer Konzeption sind, dass Sprache und Literatur stets zusammengedacht werden, dass die Einführung an der Überlieferung orientiert ist und dass ausgewählte Texte mit kleineren Übungen in die Kapitel integriert sind. Mittelniederdeutsche Sprache wird aus synchroner Perspektive auf den verschiedenen grammatischen Ebenen beschrieben. Diachrone Aspekte werden dort ergänzend einbezogen, wo sie dem Textverständnis dienen. Um ein breites Verständnis des Mittelniederdeutschen zu ermöglichen und das Lesen und Übersetzen der Quellen zu erleichtern, wird auf sprachliche Variation als ein wesentliches Merkmal historischer Sprachstufen eingegangen. Die Sprachlehre berücksichtigt Ergebnisse aktueller Forschung und bezieht Daten des "Referenzkorpus Mittelniederdeutsch/Niederrheinisch (1200-1650)" ein. Die sprachlichen Phänomene werden an den Texten veranschaulicht, die der literaturgeschichtliche Teil der Einführung vorstellt. The questions posed by disability studies scholarship are increasingly of interest to medieval studies scholars and there have been a wealth of books published on the intersection of these two fields of research over the past two decades. More recently, medieval scholars have developed a framework for considering more specifically medieval ways of thinking about disability, analyzing the medieval conception of the different or 'othered' body and thinking through 'medieval things': such as the responses to injury and resulting impairment in contemporary law, literature, and art; the impaired body as a site for miraculous transformation; the presence of physical and mental difference in different cultural modes than exist in the modern world; and the role of theosophical thought in characterizing difference. This is the first volume to survey this field as a whole, bringing together the most notable scholars in the field alongside up-and-coming academics, to analyse recent studies and to suggest directions for future research. Chapters are organized into four categories that treat broadly the current questions of the field as they apply to each contributor's area of expertise: Articulations of Difference; Critical Perspectives; Traditions of Medieval Thought; and Disability and Material Cultures. Each category is introduced by a leading figure in the field, and the volume is concluded with an Afterword.

Bloomsbury Neo-Latin Series: Early Modern Texts and Anthologies

On June 13, 1753 the Irene set sail from London to New York. One of her passengers was Christian Wedsted, a Moravian missionary headed to his post in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania. While many travelers would chronicle their transatlantic journeys, Wedsted chose to recount his in 200 lines of Latin poetry, imitating the preferred form of the ancient Roman poet Ovid. This poem is one of about 45 Latin poems that Wedsted composed in Germany, England, and Pennsylvania, all of which are presented here together for the first time alongside translations into English. A critical introduction and commentary provide historical, literary, and religious context for Wedsted's poetry, across an oeuvre containing birthday poems, impassioned religious verses, and personal anecdotes about life in colonial Pennsylvania. At around 1200 lines, the poems make up one of the largest extant collections of 18th-century Latin poetry from the Americas. Moravian piety is central to Wedsted's identity, and he exchanges poems with important Moravian personalities, weaving together classical material and Christian material to create an original and unique project in colonial America. Many of the poems are experiments in genre that put ancient models and meters to work in new contexts. Half of the poems were written after his arrival in America, and as such they offer a rare window into life on the colonial frontier.
