This open access book investigates film studios in Britain, France, Germany and Italy between the 1930s and 1960s. During this time, studios faces unprecedented challenges including wartime disruptions, post-war fragmentation, movement of labour and the introduction of new technologies. While the study of film studios has been dominated by the centralized Hollywood 'studio system', the authors present new research about the often very different histories of Europe's film studios, comparing their geographic locations, architectures and infrastructural development. They explore a number of well-known studios including Pinewood, Joinville, Babelsberg and Cinecittà, as well as lesser-known production sites such as Manchester, Victorine, post-war West German studios and Tirrenia as diverse creative and economic infrastructures. Drawing on a wealth of archival sources, photographs, films, aerial maps and visualizations, the book charts how artistic practices responded to transnational flows in film studio expertise, as studios constituted formative, materially based 'spaces of the imagination' that produced some of cinema's most influential films. How studios worked in the past as dynamic, creative working environments that were profoundly influenced by their locations, architectures and personnel, is foregrounded as the authors produce new understandings of how the collaborative and material environments of studio spaces and technologies shaped film production and cultures. This book straddles disciplines that are usually separated to provide an overview of how food both shapes and is shaped by interpersonal, psycho-social, socio-political and historical dynamics in South Africa. It courageously acknowledges and respects a very wide range of disciplinary and theoretical approaches to food in South Africa. Desiree Lewis, Professor, University of the Western Cape Food is never just food. This interdisciplinary volume examines the cultural politics of food in South Africa, revealing how nourishment is bound up with histories of colonialism, apartheid, migration and enduring inequality. Drawing on perspectives from media studies, sociology, history and cultural studies, the chapters explore how food functions as a site of identity, resistance, memory and aspiration. From Indigenous food systems and missionary food regimes to television, advertising and social media, the book traces how meanings around food are produced, contested and mediated. It considers the everyday and the symbolic, from home-cooked meals and community cookbooks to performances of culinary capital within foodie cultures. Through this diverse and critical lens, the volume argues that food in South Africa cannot be separated from the power structures and social dynamics that shape it. In doing so, it offers a vital counterpoint to dominant narratives from the Global North, contributing to a richer understanding of how food intersects with representation, access and cultural expression in the Global South.

Offers an arts-based, storying, textual and visual lens on gender-based violence in the UK and Mexico. This book is a unique image-based bilingual (English and Spanish) book of textual and visual narratives of gender-based violence (GBV) in the UK and Mexico, framed with a critical commentary that sets these stories in the context of GBV in both countries. Visual and textual stories convey the 'felt' experience of GBV, engaging readers and audiences in the apparently mundane as well as the shocking. Such stories help contest the prominence of crime statistics in evidencing GBV, statistics which often distort experience and reflect and maintain exclusionary policies and practices, particularly for minoritised communities. The transnational project on which this book is based invited artists and creative writers from diverse backgrounds in the UK and Mexico to respond to lived accounts of GBV in comic stories, short stories, poems, 3D installations, fine art photography, painting and film. This book brings together these visual and textual stories and sets out a series of readings and analyses that seek to further knowledge on GBV in different cultural contexts. Storying the Immobilities of Gender Violence in the UK and Mexico

Building on contemporary scholarship on post-network television, feminism, melodrama, and crime television, Alison Wielgus analyzes post-network female detective television through the lenses of genre, industry, and discourses of police abolition to argue for a radicalization of crime television that incorporates discourses of restorative justice and a feminist ethics of care. This book positions post-network female detective television as a primary site to examine the intersections of cultural discourses like #MeToo and Black Lives Matter, analyzing the roles of several components of the genre including serialization, circulation, family trauma, transnational victimhood, and discourses of police abolition, among others. Drawing on narrative and genre theory, this book argues that a melodrama/crime television dialectic undergirds post-network detective television, allowing the female detective to emerge as a contested figure representative of larger cultural tensions between gender and policing. While changing industrial measures have allowed for niche programing to evolve and more rigorously interrogate gender norms, Wielgus finds that this disruption rarely extends to the institution of policing itself. #MeToo's imperatives and precursors have worked toward deepening and complicating depictions of sexual assault and femicide with narrative nuance, but there remains an uneasy relationship between Black Lives Matter and policing discourses and the desire to position female detectives as heroic saviors in the production of copaganda narratives. Ultimately, this book identifies a central problem of crime television in the limitations the genre places on the construction and representation of the structural and societal functions of policing, even amid other strides in progressive representation.
