The most engaging, surprising and revealing look at the Beatles story you'll read.

Maconie Stuart: WITH A LITTLE HELP FROM
THEIR FRIENDS

WITH A LITTLE HELP FROM THEIR FRIENDS

The Beatles Changed the World. but Who Changed Theirs?

Contextualizing Art Markets

Before the tragedy of the Holocaust, many of the leading art and antiques dealers across Europe were Jewish, establishing dynamic cross-Channel, international and transatlantic networks. Aside from a few famous examples, however, we are only at the beginning of exploring the diversity of Jewish dealers' commercial and cultural worlds, and reflecting on the particular conditions that made possible their dramatic expansion within the profession. Adopting a wider geography than any previous study, this book brings together a team of distinguished international contributors to consider Jewish art dealers as an interconnected cohort, tied together by common strategies and a shared vulnerability. After an extended historiographical introduction, the volume presents case studies and trends from 1860-1940, including: Jewish family businesses in Western Europe; the role of Jews as mediators of art from East Asia; the antisemitism and suspicion faced by Jewish dealers; Jews as theorists, exhibition makers and promoters of modern art ; and the geographical mobility and professional reinvention of Jewish dealers in times of economic and political crisis. With a wide variety of illustrations, including paintings, decorative arts, historic photographs and archival material, the volume adopts a mix of methodological approaches to analyse a key chapter in Jewish cultural history and in the history of the international art market. Includes Afterword by Charles Dellheim, author of Belonging and Betrayal: How Jews Made the Art World Modern (2021).

Negotiating Cultural Modernity

Jewish Dealers and the European Art Market, c. 1860–1940

The Art Law Library

This open access book investigates the role played by copyright on the digitisation of cultural heritage from three angles: the theoretical differences between cultural property law and copyright; a comparative analysis of the EU, UK, and US; and analysis of current practices and concerns, based on empirical research. As heritage digitisation projects become increasingly common for purposes such as preservation and access, the impact of copyright is also becoming more problematic. In order to provide a full and current picture of the copyright problem, the book first introduces the reader to the debates on the scope and ownership of cultural heritage and provides an overview of the copyright implications of the digitisation process and newer uses, including 2D and 3D scanning; virtual and augmented reality; text and data mining; and artificial intelligence. The author then divides the main critical analysis into three parts, referred to as the 'clashes with copyright'. The first, clash in theory, lies between cultural property law and copyright justification theories. The second clash is in the different legal approaches to digitising in-copyright, public domain, orphan, out-of-commerce and unpublished works in the chosen jurisdictions, focusing on the relevant rights and defences. The third clash is in the interests of stakeholders, based on public reactions to existing projects and cases, supported by interviews with heritage professionals engaging in digitisation. By placing itself in this particular intersection of law, heritage, and technology, the book will be of interest to both intellectual property academics and cultural heritage professionals. The ebook editions of this book are available open access under a CC BY-NC-ND 4.0 licence on bloomsburycollections.com.

Rights and Duties of Directors

This open access book offersa cultural history of lawsuits that traces the development of French performance rights from la Belle Époque, throughthe Roaring Twenties, and into thePost-War period. It does so by analysing the ways in which performers, composers, and playwrights took to French courtrooms, sought attention in mass media, and participated in political debates to claim their rights to create and control musical and theatrical performance. In 19th-century France, composers and playwrights organised in member-run societies that successfully used authors' rights legislation to curb the power of theatre managers. By the turn of the 20th century, these so-called collective management organisations had transformed French cultural industries by building out structures of royalty collection and improving litigation practices. From the café-concert culture in 19th-century Montmartre and the rise of modern celebrity culture, to mass media and radio entertainment, the book traces precedent-setting litigation that defined who creates and controls performance. The book challenges previous narratives that centre the individualisation of authors in the expansion of the international copyright regime while neglecting performers. Instead, it reveals the ways in which the personality and individuality of performers have played a constitutive role in discourses about genius, technology, and legal categories. Performance as Intellectual Property is for anyone interested in the emergence of modern European cultural industries and the relationships between intellectual property systems, creativity, and art. The ebook editions of this book are available open access under a CC BY-NC-ND 4.0 licence on bloomsburycollections.com Open access was funded by the European Research Council.

The Golden Pitch

Bloomsbury Spectres, Hauntings and Horrors

Exploring current debates in creative writing about the borders between fiction and creative nonfiction, this collection of essays draws on concepts of the uncanny and hauntology to challenge, subvert and transgress the boundary between forms. Hauntology, as originally defined by Derrida, challenges the certainties of ontology, in a similar way to debates about truth in creative nonfiction; by bringing together authors that undermine the fiction/nonfiction binary, Haunted Writing considers the ways in which real events and experiences haunt writers as they craft their work. Offering insight into how the past - both personal and historical - is experienced and understood in the present, this book includes writing from a diverse group of established and emerging authors who situate their work on genre boundaries and discuss their own creative practice to show how their writing 'haunts' real events. With essays covering a range of ideas from subjectivity, intersectionality and challenging dominant versions of history, to braiding personal and researched stories, playfulness, experimentation and creating stories from archival documents, this beautifully written collection intervenes in contemporary discussions in creative writing and culture surrounding ownership, appropriation and ethics. Bringing a fresh voice and new perspectives to ever-present questions within creative writing, Haunted Writing uncovers how the past is a spectre that disrupts contemporary writing.

Storytelling from the Borders of Fiction and Nonfiction

Haunted Writing

The first book to investigate, analyze and theorize the creative processes of literary writers, Creativity and Contingency in Literary Writing uses author interviews, manuscript genetics and textual evidence to explore creativity from the authorial perspective. Studying an author's practice, literary form and contextual contingencies as elements that affect literary creativity, Karin Kukkoken develops theoretical models for examining the age-old problem of artistic creation and how it has been put to works by authors from the nineteenth century to the age of digital fiction, across a range of languages. With insights from the cognitive sciences, anthropology and philosophy of mind as well as literary studies, the book calls upon interviews with Siri Hustvedt, Marina Warner, Anne Weber, Camille Laurens, Gwenaëlle Aubry, Kate Pullinger, Gunnhild Øyehaug, Maria Stepanova and György Dragomán and studies the manuscripts of Charlotte Brontë, Cora Sandel, Elsa Morante and Italo Calvino. Overcoming the traditional distinction between creative agent, process and creative product, Creativity and Contingency in Literary Writing is as accessible and illuminating as it is important to understandings of human creativity.

How apprenticeship shaped the English economy Apprenticeship dominated training and skill formation in early modern Europe. Years spent learning from a skilled master were a nearly universal experience for young workers in crafts and trade. In England, when apprenticeship reached its peak, as many as a third of all teenage males would serve and learn as apprentices. In The Market for Skill, Patrick Wallis shows how apprenticeship helped reshape the English economy. Some historians see apprenticeship as a key ingredient in the industrial revolution; others agree with Adam Smith in seeing it as wasteful and conservative. Wallis shows that neither of these perspectives is entirely accurate. He offers a new account of apprenticeship and the market for skill in England, analyzing the records of hundreds of thousands of individual apprentices to tell the story of how apprenticeship worked and how it contributed to the transformation of England. Wallis details the activities of apprentices and masters, the strategies of ambitious parents, the interventions of guilds and the decisions of town officials. He shows how the system of early modern apprenticeship contributed to the growth of cities, the movement of workers from farms to manufacturing and the spread of new technologies and productive knowledge. In this groundbreaking study, Wallis argues that apprenticeship succeeded precisely because it was a flexible institution which allowed apprentices to change their minds and exit contracts early. Apprenticeship provided a vital channel for training that families could trust and that was accessible to most young people, whatever their background.

Apprenticeship and Economic Growth in Early Modern England

The Market for Skill

This book gives extraordinary new insights into the legal, political and industrial strife in the UK of the early 1970s, focusing on the National Industrial Relations Court and how its independence came to be injured at a time of national crisis. Constitutional and employment lawyers, and indeed anyone interested in the history of the times, will not want to be without this deeply researched yet entertaining work. When the Heath Government came to power in 1970, it set up the National Industrial Relations Court to referee highly contentious disputes between unions and employers. Regarded with hostility by the labour movement from the start, the Court and its President, Sir John Donaldson, faced mounting suspicion, and were regularly front-page news. When Donaldson jailed five dockers in 1972 - the Pentonville Five - for defying the Court's orders, strikes erupted and the docks closed. With the country's food supplies dwindling, a state of emergency loomed. How had it come to this? Could a way through be found? This is a revelatory account of the National Industrial Relations Court's defining crisis, set in the context of a wider, and frequently startling, exposition of how Donaldson went about his role as its President. Peter Oldham KC combines decades of experience as a barrister with archival research to shine a bright new light on how and why the Court found itself doing - in Donaldson's own words - 'rather peculiar things'.

Landmark Cases

Part of the iconic Landmark Cases series, this book brings the most significant cases in charity law together for the first time. More than four hundred years have passed since the Statute of Charitable Uses of 1601, whose Preamble set out a list of charitable purposes which has formed the basis of the modern legal definition of charity. This book explores the substantial body of judge-made rules and principles developed since then, highlighting a carefully curated selection of the landmark cases which have shaped charity law. Each chapter analyses one or more judicial decisions, setting them in their historical context, explaining their contemporary importance, and considering their future relevance. The selected cases cover a broad range of topics. Some go to the heart of what it means to be a charity, elucidating charity's legal definition and public benefit requirement. Others demonstrate how charity law has been shaped by its interaction with other bodies of law, including trust law, company law and equality law, and by emerging tensions between trustees' overriding duty to further the charity's purposes and broader moral obligations or ethical considerations. The book has a core focus on English precedents, but the cases are touchstones in many jurisdictions. Our contributors therefore include scholars, judges and practitioners from Australia, Canada, New Zealand and Singapore, as well as from the UK. The result is a book that sheds new light on the application and development of charity law's defining rules and principles across the common law world.
