Der Philosoph, Logiker und Techniktheoretiker Gotthard Günther (1900-1984) gehört zu den vergessenen Protagonisten der Philosophiegeschichte des 20. Jahrhunderts. In seinem wechselhaften und intellektuell wie biographisch schillernden Werdegang spiegeln sich die Paradoxien und Widersprüche seiner Zeit auf der Ebene der philosophischen Theoriebildung wider.
Günther beginnt seine zunächst vielversprechende Karriere 1933 als Neuidealist mit einer immanenten Kritik an Hegels Logik, wechselt dann im US-amerikanischen Exil auf das Terrain der formalen Logik, befasst sich schließlich mit den noch jungen kybernetischen Theorien zu künstlicher Intelligenz und wird Forschungsprofessor an einer Einrichtung zur Erforschung ¿biologischer Computer¿. Zusammengehalten wird dieser Weg vom Idealisten zum (philosophischen) Techniker durch die Überzeugung, dass die bisherige klassisch-logische Grundlage unseres Verständnisses des menschlichen Geistes dessen wahre Kraft nicht zu freizulegen vermag und durch eine neue, 'trans-klassische' Grundlage ersetzt werden muss. Die Antwort auf die Frage, wie dies geschehen könnte und wie eine solche Logik auszusehen hat, sucht Günther bei Hegel, Schelling und Fichte, ebenso aber im logischen Kalkül und schließlich in den kybernetischen Entwürfen von 'mechanical brains'.
Das Buch von Christoph Görlich rekonstruiert den philosophischen und biographischen Weg Günthers, führt dabei in sein Werk ein und setzt sich mit der geschichtsphilosophischen Bedeutung der Günther'schen Konversion von der philosophischen Idee zum technologischen Entwurf auseinander.
