For far too long, emerging markets and developing countries have played a subservient role in the global economy.This book builds a compelling case that a new settlement is needed, that rebalances power, well beyond existing arrangements such as the G20, and creates a shared vision to build economic growth and prosperity. The alternative is a world which lurches from crisis to conflict, jeopardising peace and prosperity. The very phrase "emerging markets" connotes that some countries are still developing and cannot compete with mostly Western global economic heavyweights. But the rise of China and India has not been isolated phenomena, with many other emerged countries also becoming confident about their place in the world: these are emerged markets, not the Global South or the Third World. Although these emerged countries now dominate global trade and investment and are the biggest champions of globalisation, their dramatic increase in economic weight has not led to a commensurate increase in clout and influence on the world stage, due to fundamentally unchanged World War II¿ra structures and apparatus.Written by a global economics insider who has been in the room in multilateral, national, and private sector organisations, this book argues that the developed and emerged worlds should be positioned as equal economic partners, requiring dramatic adjustments in perceptions and power on the part of the developed world. Though clear¿yed about the ills that continue to exist in the emerged world, Vasuki Shastry explains why rich countries should be willing and open to learn from their success stories. He presents a reimagined narrative for the global economy, with more collaboration, less finger¿ointing, and a confluence of equals in managing profound economic risks and opportunities, now and in the future. This conference proceedings is for the International Conference on Green Policies and Practices: Catalyst or Pressure for Trade and Investment. The conference was organized on 22nd and 23rd November 2024 at University of Economics and Business, Vietnam National University - Hanoi. The conference is the 12th in the series of annual Conferences on International Economic Cooperation and Integration (CIECI), initiated in 2013 by the VNU-UEB. The theme of the conference, "Green Policies and Practices: Catalyst or Pressure for Trade and Investment", reflects one of the most pressing debates of our time: the balance between economic growth and environmental sustainability. As global trade and investment deepen, the urgency of integrating green standards into policies and practices has never been greater.

This book examines the World Trade Organisation (WTO) Dispute Settlement Understanding (DSU) from the perspective of the world's Least Developed Countries (LDCs).Ensuring predictability and stability in the rules-based international trading system requires the DSU to be accessible, efficient, reliable, and able to redress imbalances. Since the 1990s, the DSU has been the subject of review, and this book charts and explores these ongoing negotiations from the perspective of LDCs. The inability of the LDCs to fully utilise the DSU reduces their ability to redress imbalances and, by extension, their ability to fully engage in international trade and promote economic growth. This book explores the issues behind LDCs' difficulty in engaging with the DSU, with only one dispute having been brought. Arguing that WTO action alone will not address all these issues, the book advocates that the LDCs must themselves be prepared to take measures to address current weaknesses and makes recommendations as to how they may overcome some of their DSU engagement issues.The book will be of interest to researchers in the field of international trade law, international law, and dispute resolution.
