This study tracks the progress of Suhrawardī’s philosophy focusing on his critique of the axial doctrine of the categories and topics related to it: predication and hylomorphism. While it’s known that he rejected hylomorphism and reduced the categories into five, it’s not known how and in which context he has achieved his positions. This is a philosophical study with an eye on the history of concepts. Each chapter detects the historical development from Aristotle through his commentators to Avicenna and critical Avicennans, and then to Suhrawardī. Suhrawardī discerns two diverging projects in the Categories: An ontological project of the ten highest genera of being, and a project of predication embodied in Aristotle’s predicative square. He discusses the latter in the Isagoge, whereas the former is discussed and reduced to five (substance, quality, quantity, relation, motion) in metaphysics. He also shifts hylomorphism from metaphysics – its Avicennan locus – to physics. Perhaps for this reason scholars never paid attention to his proper texts for the theory of body and confined themselves with the polemics of Ḥikmat al-išrāq. This is the first study of physics and general metaphysics of al-Talwīḥāt, al-Mašāriʿ, and al-Muqāwamāt.

The making of human consciousness and the question of self-becoming presents a remarkable complication along the continuum of sentient matter. Self-consciousness is an oddity that both unites and differentiates humans from other modes of conscious existence. Lambros Malafouris’ evocative proposal is that people are STRANGE, which stands for the process of Situated TRANsactional GEnesis by which self-becoming is realized at the intersection of mind and matter. This book breaks new ground by applying material engagement theory expertly to questions about self-location, the subject-object division, and the nature of self-boundaries. Malafouris argues that self-bounding (the process by which human ways of being are assembled, owned, or else bound to form what we call self or person) is rarely confined to a singular body. Our boundaries shift in response to the changing material environments and our modes of creative material engagement. Moreover, it is the bounding of consciousness that allows the unbounding of human thought and imagination. Self-bounding is the precondition for a borderless mind. Self-bound is thought-unbound. The theoretical upshot is that, rather than conceiving of self-consciousness as internal and ontological distinct from the material world, we must approach it as a continuous process fundamentally codependent with it.

This edited volume brings together scholars from diverse theoretical traditions to present and discuss their perspective on theory-building in psychology. Amid ongoing discussions about a potential (theory) crisis in the discipline, this collection offers a timely and comprehensive overview of key debates. It serves as a foundation for further reflection and future research.The book consists of three parts. The chapters in the first part analyse conceptual and philosophical issues underlying theory- and model-building in psychology. By contextualizing the debate with historical and interdisciplinary arguments, these chapters provide a framework for further discussion. The second part is dedicated to the challenges that emerge when inquiring into the nature of theory- and model-building in psychology. Besides experimental cognitive psychology, he engages with foundational problems of psychology concerning the discipline's history, meta-theory, and methodology. This volume brings together the Letter to Markella and the Sentences of the Neoplatonist Porphyrios in a bilingual reader's edition with an introduction and notes, as well as a number of fragments that tie in with the content of both works. The Latin translation of the Sentences by Marsilio Ficino rounds off the selection. Thematically, the texts combine the consideration of the soul from different perspectives: concrete instructions on ethically correct behaviour; theoretical explanations on the nature of the soul; the relationship of the soul to the body and the spiritual realm; discussion of other schools of thought. Although the two main writings belong to different genres, the sententious character of the Letter to Markella also forms a bridge to the Sentences in addition to the thematic connections. The texts offer a compact overview of Neoplatonic principles as well as suggestions on the big questions about our own soul and how we want to live.

Science and the Other is about modern science and its role in the ruling geopolitics of onto-epistemic violence. Tracing back over a century in scientific meta-discourse in philosophy, sociology, anthropology, feminist and decolonial STS, the book explores how scientific universalism has been functioning as an ideological machine for globalising structures of exploitation. By seeking “objective truth” in a world divided into subjects and objects, culture and nature, humans and non-humans, "developed" and "underdeveloped" people and regions, modern science tacitly naturalises structural inequalities and legitimises the exploitation of both non-human nature and a major part of humanity. Modern science has given us the superpowers that brought about the “Anthropocene”, but unfortunately not the wisdom to face its existential challenges. There is an urgent need to engage with Other(ed), marginalised ways of knowing in equitable, pluriversal dialogue about the knowledge needed to build liveable world(s).&nbsp;
Science and the Other is an in-depth inquiry into the question of what actually hinders us from engaging into cross-fertilising pluriversal dialogue. Based on a three years action research with the Potiguara in north-east Brazil, the book offers a comparative analysis of Potiguara's and scientific cosmologies. Scientists and philosophers have been struggling to provide a coherent naturalistic theory of mind and matter – with little success. Instead, evidence from quantum physics and neuroscience suggests a variety of possible ontological interpretations, some of which describe a world made up by entities and principles with properties comparable to those in the Potiguara´s world. However, the Potiguara´s cosmology uses radically different metaphors, thereby painting a radically different picture of “reality”, and thus, allowing for onto-epistemic shifts and new insights. Accordingly, a dialogue between modern science and Other, hitherto excluded knowledge cultures should not only be possible; looking through the Others´ lens might also help us find alternative solutions to old, recalcitrant problems (e.g. relativism or the mind-body problem) and open our eyes for new horizons and alternative futures beyond the scope of modern/colonial epistemologies.
