This book discusses private international law rules relevant to environmental disputes in Asia that involve corporations, surveys 12 Asian jurisdictions, and proposes areas for reform. The volume is split into two sections. The first of these is dedicated to framing and discussing specific issues, such as the liability of corporations, directors and investors for environmental wrongdoing, or the recognition and enforcement of foreign judgements and awards on environmental disputes - and how domestic rules may affect private international law. The second section outlines the rules of select Asian jurisdictions that are relevant to environmental disputes involving corporations, and suggests areas for reform. Jurisdictions covered include China, Hong Kong, India, Indonesia, Japan, Malaysia, Philippines, Singapore, South Korea, Taiwan, Thailand, and Vietnam. Jurisdiction-specific chapters outline the private international law rules of select Asian jurisdictions that are relevant to environmental disputes involving corporations, and suggest areas for reform. People with mental illnesses in the United States are 10 times more likely to be incarcerated than hospitalized. In fact, seventy percent of individuals in jail in the United States have a serious mental illness, a substance use disorder, or both. After confronting the failures of our criminal justice system first-hand, Miami-Dade County (Florida) Judge Steven Leifman realized that for the system to improve, a radical change was necessary. In 2000, he created Florida’s 11th Judicial Circuit Criminal Mental Health Project, later renamed to the Jail Diversion Project (JDP), which has since become the most impactful model for prison reform in the country and garnered international accolades. Complete Justice reveals Judge Leifman’s courageous and visionary efforts to successfully overhaul and restructure Miami-Dade’s mental health and criminal justice systems. The results were nothing short of miraculous. Arrests were cut in half, the jail audit was reduced by almost half, police shootings almost stopped, and the county was able to close one of its three main jails at a savings of millions of dollars. Best of all, his results are replicable and scalable. Leifman has created a state-of-the-art, transferable model, the “Miami Model,” that is starting to be applied around the country in communities large and small. This highly successful initiative, consisting of both pre-arrest and post-arrest diversion programs, brings together the resources and services of law enforcement, the justice system, and community stakeholders to divert individuals with mental illnesses who commit low-level offenses away from incarceration and into community-based care. Starting with a trip to a psychiatric wing of a Florida jail at age 17, through his early missteps as a young judge bumping up against convoluted the mental health legislature, the formation of the JDP and monumental report on Florida’s mental health system, and finally spotlighting courts across the country adopting his program, Leifman’s inspiring work offers kindness, insight, and real solutions to one of America’s most complex social problems.

This is the first book to present a new approach of institutional design as an evolutionary applied policy based on coherent conceptualization and methodology, and to study the actuality and implications of diversifying real/virtual community currencies. In contrast to a de facto standard theory, an institutional ecosystem can be composed of various institutions that continue to coexist with changing relative frequencies. In this view, diversified monetary institutions with local rules are feasible and realistic. Community currencies are worldwide attempts to redress such problems as financial instability, chronic stagnation, and decline of communities caused by globalization of the economy. Considering those alternative movements as a new type of policy, "evolutionist institutional design", this book clarifies the feasibility and significance of community currencies in the current era of globalization. The book also provides a better understanding than mainstream approaches of such platform institutions as money that determine fundamental means of cognition and action of interacting agents. Money is a symbolically generalized communication medium in the mesodomain that mediates between socioeconomic performance and patterns in the macrodomain and motives and cognitive frameworks in the microdomain. Conventional national systems of money and finance are platform institutions that determine basic replicators for a capitalistic market economy to evolve. In contrast, community currencies conveying both economic and social/cultural values are distinct platform institutions that are expected to endogenously change such basic replicators in outer and inner institutions for agents to a noncapitalistic market economy. These currencies are considered target institutions for "media design" in the framework of evolutionist institutional design.
