Where and how we pay is changing dramatically. This timely, innovative book navigates the so-called 'Cambrian explosion' of FinTech companies and more specifically to the emergence of Blockchain technologies and cryptocurrencies through the lens of the case of Ripple, a company in the field of cryptoassets and cross-border payments. Combining STS with human geography and political economy, it navigates the maelstrom of proliferating new and old payment infrastructure, to develop a theoretical and empirical 'infrastructural inversion' of money. Money does not just flow through or behave like an infrastructure, but rather it is an infrastructure, because it is predicated upon the existence of accounting and payment infrastructures of memory for its very existence. Using the concepts of active forms and dispositions from design and architecture, this nuanced book analyses how money's infrastructures act in the world materially, spatially, as objects and subjects of desire and as political and economic machines. If we want new forms of money for new forms of society, we need to think holistically and ecologically about the complex combinations of materiality, space, desire and political economies that money generates and propagates. Tracing the trajectory of a cryptoasset project from an alternative credit system to an interbank, cross-border company, the book moves beyond a Bitcoin-centric view of money. It reveals how alternative and mainstream, networked and sovereign forms of money have long been intertwined.

The history of money and banking has undergone three major transformations: from commodity money (e.g. currency backed by gold), to fiat money (e.g. currency not backed by a commodity), and now toward intangible money (e.g. digital forms without any backing). While the shift from commodity to fiat money was momentous, the transition to intangible money has profound implications for banking, monetary policy, and financial stability. Intangible Money, Banking, and Information provides a comprehensive overview of these transformations from the perspective of both the history of economic thought and monetary economics. It shows how advances in information and communication technology have accelerated the transition to intangible money, reshaping how transactions are recorded and how monetary systems function. This book integrates diversified disciplines, research approaches, and methodologies of area studies, regional economic development, and regional science. With its huge population, China has accomplished rapid economic growth since the 1990s, although the significant income gap among regions and individuals has become a serious problem for its society. China's accession to the WTO in 2001 has had various influences on the entire food system, from agriculture to consumers, through the food manufacturing and distribution industries. The changes in the Chinese food system are considered to have also affected the agriculture and food industries in Asian countries where economic interdependence has been promoted in past decades. The author argues these issues based on interdisciplinary and multi-disciplinary methods and approaches and has successfully derived empirical and theoretical results that are rich in policy implications. The law codes in the Middle East North Africa (MENA) region are a well-crafted blend of civil and Islamic law in which civil law principles do not violate Islamic provisions. Yet, common law principles derived either from English common law or Islamic customary usages remain unidentified and thus ignored. Here, this complex scenario is rectified through a comparative analysis of the primary data (e.g. cases, statutes and arbitral award decisions), adding common law and uncodified Islamic custom to MENA law codes. The purpose of this comparative analysis is to allow common legal principles found in civil, common and Islamic law to be distilled in order to create a new, harmonised international commercial arbitration law code (HICALC) or uniform Arab arbitration law (UAAL) for adoption in the MENA region, where these principles already greatly influence the legal systems and can be readily assimilated into a harmonised or uniform code. The work demonstrates that this new code would lead to improved arbitral award enforcement in the MENA.

This is the first book to present a new approach of institutional design as an evolutionary applied policy based on coherent conceptualization and methodology, and to study the actuality and implications of diversifying real/virtual community currencies. In contrast to a de facto standard theory, an institutional ecosystem can be composed of various institutions that continue to coexist with changing relative frequencies. In this view, diversified monetary institutions with local rules are feasible and realistic. Community currencies are worldwide attempts to redress such problems as financial instability, chronic stagnation, and decline of communities caused by globalization of the economy. Considering those alternative movements as a new type of policy, "evolutionist institutional design", this book clarifies the feasibility and significance of community currencies in the current era of globalization. The book also provides a better understanding than mainstream approaches of such platform institutions as money that determine fundamental means of cognition and action of interacting agents. Money is a symbolically generalized communication medium in the mesodomain that mediates between socioeconomic performance and patterns in the macrodomain and motives and cognitive frameworks in the microdomain. Conventional national systems of money and finance are platform institutions that determine basic replicators for a capitalistic market economy to evolve. In contrast, community currencies conveying both economic and social/cultural values are distinct platform institutions that are expected to endogenously change such basic replicators in outer and inner institutions for agents to a noncapitalistic market economy. These currencies are considered target institutions for "media design" in the framework of evolutionist institutional design.
