Cities of the Ancient World

Cádiz presents a synthesis of the history of the city from its foundation by the Phoencians until the death of Franco in 1975, building upon recent developments in archaeological fieldwork and historical research. Two themes run through the book: the relationship of Cádiz to Andalucía, and its role as a nexus point between the Iberian Peninsula and the wider world, both the Mediterranean and Atlantic.Cádiz is the first full, scholarly treatment of the history of this fascinating city, from its origins as Gadir through to the 20th century.

Routledge Methodist Studies Series

This book examines two main themes which had national significance in eighteenth-century British Methodism. First, the interaction between the two distinct theological expressions of Methodism; Calvinist and Arminian. The 'parting of the ways' marks the first major split in Methodism as the differences of theological understanding changed into the demarcation of religious organisations. The core of the book will feature a series of case-studies which explore Calvinist and Arminian Methodists in a number of key locations, where competition and even religious take-over bids were used by John Wesley's movement to gain religious dominance. Secondly, the book explores the nature of John Wesley's leadership of his movement, and especially how the competition between the Calvinist and Arminian strands of Methodism made it necessary for Wesley to change the way he exercised his leadership and authority. This will be examined through Wesley's role as connexional leader and his relationships with individual preachers and society members. Hart also explores both the reasons his leadership changed over the period of the study and the impact these changes had in the local context. The book will explore how these changes were made necessary by the increasing size of his 'Connexion' and the attendant changes in the application of Wesleyan discipline especially on the itinerant preachers. Whilst much has been written about Wesleyanism, and more specifically about John Wesley as a religious leader, and there is now an increase of interest in George Whitefield and the Calvinist branch of Methodism. This book is unique in examining how the two affected each other at the local level. The book shows that, however united were the leaders of early Methodism even in their theological diversity, in promoting evangelical revival their unity was not strong enough to hold together the religious movements they founded.

Together the Dacians and the Getae were the creators of the largest unified power of ancient Europe outside of the Roman Empire, yet each was colonized and integrated into the Roman imperial system differently. This volume utilizes high-resolution GIS mapping, remote sensing data, and aerial and satellite imagery to demonstrate changes to the landscape and to reconsider human settlement in antiquity. It provides a fresh investigation of the evolution of urbanization and developments in local economy, as well as long-term changes in material culture, social behavior, and identity over more than a thousand years. The Getae offers a realistic appreciation of the character of Roman military occupation and participation of provincial subjects in the Roman imperial system.

The data and literature on the Getae to date has however emerged from traditional site-based investigations and surveys, resulting in heavily biased and fragmented understandings of the scale, nature, and impact of their conquest and colonization. This sweeping volume utilizes high-resolution GIS mapping, extensive analysis of remote sensing data, and archival aerial and satellite imagery to present a holistic view of changes to the landscape and to reconsider the extent of human settlement in antiquity. The current economic crisis, with diverging employment outcomes in different countries, has revealed the ongoing relevance of comparative industrial relations, but also the need for its renewal. The hitherto dominating approaches, based on institutions and national 'models', do not pay sufficient attentions to change and to international factors. This book fills the gap by tracing the patterns of change in industrial relations in the six largest EU countries during the last twenty years, under the pressure of three crucial international forces: multinational companies, labour migration, and EU policies. Written in an accessible language and enriched by empirical case studies, it is aimed at undergraduate and postgraduate students, researchers and practitioners.

The current economic crisis, with diverging outcomes in terms of employment in countries like Germany as opposed to countries like the UK or Spain, have revealed the ongoing relevance of comparative industrial relations, but also the need for its renewal. The hitherto dominating approaches, based on institutions and national ‘models’, do not pay sufficient attentions to change and to international factors. This book fills the gap by tracing the patterns of change in industrial relations in the six largest EU countries during the last twenty years, under the pressure of three crucial international forces: multinational companies, labour migration, and EU policies. Based on two year of intensive first-hand research in the six countries, it presents an integrated argument on the ongoing relevance of national political traditions in the ways international pressures on employment relations are dealt with.
