Traces of the Distant Human Past

Understanding the Archaeology of our Origins

Through a series of case-studies of nine Aegean and Ionian islands, the contributors examine the ancient epigraphic culture of each island's political, social and religious history from the archaic age until late antiquity. These Mediterranean islands - Delos, Thera, Crete, Chis, Samos, Kos, Rhodes, Amorgos and the Ionian islands - were a world in themselves with their own dialects, cults, customs and political structures. Through a careful reading of a range of inscriptions, new interpretations arise concerning our understanding of their constitutional history, economic transformation, relationship with major powers, as well as notions of identity and connectivity. Inscribing for public display was a feature of Greek civilization that was carried out not only by priests, politicians and the elite, but also by individual citizens. The Greeks developed a plethora of distinct categories of inscriptions, going beyond the standard of epitaphs and dedications to the gods, to include decrees of the people, honorific inscriptions cut into the bases of statues and monuments dedicated to benefactors and athletes. However, the intensity of inscribing varied from one century to the other, and these fluctuations can be represented from a quantative approach as epigraphic curves. The significance of this volume is that it offers an overview of the history of these lesser states, which are not necessarily well documented in literary evidence to the degree comparable with Athens or Sparta.

What today we deem as characteristic of the city of Rome was largely the product of one particular ideology of Rome; our understanding of the city's spatial relationships and our sense of its visual familiarity have been orchestrated by the vision of one man, Benito Mussolini. Many students of antiquity are aware that the Fascist regime sponsored excavations throughout Italy and the Mediterranean. Yet perhaps more significant is the fact of Mussolini's creation of the physical vision of Roman antiquity, literally how we view and thereby interpret the Roman city. The dominant vistas from which we study the emblematic Roman monuments were all designed and constructed between 1925 and 1942.

Als ,Nachkriegsliteratur' wird generell die Literatur ab dem Ende des Zweiten Weltkriegs bis 1989 gefasst - mit einem Fokus auf die 1950 bis 1970er Jahre. Angesichts der Vielzahl an deutschsprachigen Autor/innen im deutschsprachigen Bereich (inkl. DDR, Schweiz und Österreich) konzentriert sich der Band auf die zentralen kulturpolitischen Ereignisse sowie Entwicklungen des Literaturbetriebs und auf die Gattungen, die typisch für das jeweilige Jahrzehnt sind (mit ca. 6 Musterinterpretationen).

This book will fill a need among animal paleopathologists and animal forensic scientists for a text/atlas focused on lesions that commonly appear in skeletal remains. The text describes what is known about disease pathogenesis and occurrence in modern and historical settings and include evolutionary and comparative considerations. It is a stand-alone atlas on animal bone disease with images of lesions on the whole bone, which would facilitate understanding of bone disease and provide insights into disease processes. This book fills a unique niche - a text/atlases on comparative bone pathology that includes images of whole specimens.

The questions posed by disability studies scholarship are increasingly of interest to medieval studies scholars and there have been a wealth of books published on the intersection of these two fields of research over the past two decades. More recently, medieval scholars have developed a framework for considering more specifically medieval ways of thinking about disability, analyzing the medieval conception of the different or 'othered' body and thinking through 'medieval things': such as the responses to injury and resulting impairment in contemporary law, literature, and art; the impaired body as a site for miraculous transformation; the presence of physical and mental difference in different cultural modes than exist in the modern world; and the role of theosophical thought in characterizing difference. This is the first volume to survey this field as a whole, bringing together the most notable scholars in the field alongside up-and-coming academics, to analyse recent studies and to suggest directions for future research. Chapters are organized into four categories that treat broadly the current questions of the field as they apply to each contributor's area of expertise: Articulations of Difference; Critical Perspectives; Traditions of Medieval Thought; and Disability and Material Cultures. Each category is introduced by a leading figure in the field, and the volume is concluded with an Afterword.
