Coldplay: die größte Band der Welt - bescheiden und sympathisch 

'Wir waren nie cool und werden es auch nie sein', sagt Coldplay-Sänger Chris Martin ganz entspannt über seine Band. Wer derart viel Erfolg hat, kann sich so ein Statement leisten: In den fast 30 Jahren Bandgeschichte haben die vier Briten ungefähr jeden Preis abgeräumt, den es im Musikgeschäft zu gewinnen gibt - darunter Grammys, Echos und Brit Awards -, jede Menge Edelmetall eingeheimst und in Europa wie den USA mit fast jedem neuen Album die Charts angeführt. Coldplay füllen auf ihren Tourneen regelmäßig die großen Stadien und sind auf Spotify die Musikgruppe mit den meisten Hörern monatlich (über 90 Millionen).
 

Nicht schlecht für vier unaufgeregte, grundanständige Jungs von der Insel, die seit der Gründung ihrer Band 1996 in derselben Besetzung unterwegs sind und deren größte Schlagzeilenträchtigkeit bisher darin lag, dass Chris Martin einige Jahre mit der Schauspielerin Gwyneth Paltrow verheiratet war. Genau das ist ihr Erfolgsrezept - und davon abgesehen geht es bei Coldplay um die Musik, um ihren bewegenden melancholischen Gitarrenpop, geprägt von Martins unverwechselbarer Falsettstimme, die ihnen Hits wie 'Yellow', 'Viva La Vida', oder 'Trouble' bescherte. Galten sie zu Beginn ihrer Karriere noch als Nachfolger von Indie-Rockern wie Travis oder Radiohead, lieferten sie später großartig melodiöse Hymnen für ein breites Publikum ab und landeten schließlich bei progressivem Konzeptrock, der brennende Fragen unserer Zeit anspricht.
 

Mit Coldplay - Die Biografie legten Debs Wild und Malcolm Croft 2018 ein fundiertes, intimes Werk vor, das mit reichlich Insiderwissen punktete - jetzt erscheint die von den Autoren aktualisierte Neuauflage mit zwei zusätzlichen Kapiteln, die Coldplays weitere Karriere bis zu ihrem jüngsten Album Moon Music und der darauffolgenden Welttournee der Superlative nachzeichnen: Nicht nur war es mit 10,3 Millionen Zuschauern die meistbesuchte Konzertreise aller Zeiten - Coldplay setzten auch in Sachen Nachhaltigkeit und Inklusion Maßstäbe. Als die Fußballstadien während der Pandemie leer blieben, schalteten auch viele Fernsehzuschauer:innen nicht mehr ein. Ohne die Resonanz von den Rängen - die Gesänge, das Geraune und Gejubel - verlor das Geschehen auf dem Rasen schlagartig an Reiz. Nie war es offensichtlicher, dass der ganz spezielle Sound einen wesentlichen Teil der Faszination dieses Sports ausmacht. Fangesänge und professionell produzierte Hymnen verleihen dem Spiel nicht nur emotionale Tiefe und prägen die Fußballkultur, sie waren auch entscheidend für die Verwandlung des Sports in ein Unterhaltungsprodukt. So ist es nicht übertrieben zu sagen: Der Aufstieg des Fußballs zur populärsten Nebensache der Welt wäre undenkbar gewesen ohne die Musik, die ihn umgibt.

Gunnar Leue hat den Sound des Fußballs als Fan in Stadien live erlebt und als Journalist und Autor beschrieben.
