Routledge Interdisciplinary Perspectives on Literature

This book explores the ways in which Latin American writers produced aesthetic and political discourses on World War I as a Latin American literary event. Siskind sheds light on the possibility of understanding World War I not just as a European affair, but also as a privileged symbolic horizon against which some of the most important Latin American writers of that period worked through collective and individual anxieties. This corpus sheds light on the interwoven meaning of the nation, modernity, cosmopolitan ethical demands, and the globalization of mass violence. It proposes productive dialogues and polemics with the fields of war literature and global modernisms.

This book explores the ways in which Latin American poets, novelists, journalists, public intellectuals, and a vast number of unknown soldier-memorialists produced aesthetic and political discourses on World War I as a Latin American literary event. Siskind presents a unified Latin American corpus that sheds light on the possibility of understanding World War I not just as a European affair, but also as a privileged symbolic horizon against which some of the most important Latin American writers of that period worked through collective and individual anxieties. This corpus sheds light on the interwoven meaning of the nation, modernity, cosmopolitan ethical demands, and the globalization of mass violence. The book interrogates wars (and world wars in particular) as they break down and rearrange the spatial meaning of particular world mappings, and how Latin American writers anxious about their place in the universalized order of modernity might have perceived these shifts as an opportunity to negotiate symbolic re-inscriptions of their political and aesthetic horizon. Looking at texts on ruins and trenches, on spies and politics, on everyday life and affective engagements with the traumatic core of the war, this book unveils a historical and literary archive that reconceptualizes and expands the globality of World War I, inscribing Latin American writers in its discursive making. It proposes productive dialogues and polemics with the fields of British, French, and German war literature (whether modernist, moralist, or sentimental), as well as with the emerging critical discourses of postcolonial war literature and global modernisms.

An illuminating reflection on the creative process from acclaimed fiction writer, essayist, and translator Lydia Davis &nbsp; When asked why she writes, Lydia Davis confesses that the question makes her uncomfortable.&nbsp;Maybe she would rather not know. Instead, Davis considers how she writes her stories, how other writers write, and what insights the how might provide into the why. &nbsp; In this free-ranging exploration, Davis discovers that one reason she writes is for pleasure: the pleasure of encountering something that demands to be treated in language, of handling and manipulating the language into the form it ought to take, and, finally, of seeing a story exist where it didn’t exist before. A provocative letter from a prominent eighteenth-century British noblewoman, Henrietta Howard, to her close friend Mary Hervey is a rare survivor of the informal, collaborative satires created by court women in this period. This particular June 1729 artifact contains a witty and light-hearted list of imaginary portraits, most of which refer to a notable political figure through references to specific paintings, sculptures, engravings, ceramics, textiles and book illustrations. Through a close reading of archival manuscripts, published correspondences and art historical treatises, Eric Weichel explores the cultural milieu and historical legacy of this remarkable text. Constrained by strict standards of moral propriety, the writer's overt discussions of sexuality in this letter are encoded through a system of embedded jokes and mythological references. Weichel argues that through Lady Hervey's mention of popular works of art, such as the Hampton Court tapestry cartoons by Raphael, the 'Jupiter and Ganymede' motif in country house décor, or the illustrated fables of Jean de La Fontaine, she alludes specifically to her wider circle's knowledge of adultery, queerness, sexual violence, and divorce among their peer group. In her imaginary portraits, Hervey also shows an interest in feminist education and literature, political and religious patronage, and contemporary news events.
