Die Einführung des freien Kassenwahlrechts Mitte der 1990er-Jahre und die Etablierung des Gesundheitsfonds 2009 hat zu einem Verdrängungswettbewerb geführt, der sich in einer Reduzierung der Anzahl der Krankenkassen manifestiert hat: Knapp 100 Krankenkassen versuchen derzeit die Versorgung für rund 72 Mio. Versicherte zu organisieren. Die Anforderungen an das Management dieser Einheiten sind damit deutlich gestiegen und zudem fallen weitere neue Aufgaben auf die Krankenkassen und Pflegekassen zu.
