The Pursuit of Smart Mobility in Urban Nodes

Trends and Innovation for Citizens and Freight

Computers, Privacy and Data Protection

This book examines the discourse and developments surrounding privacy and data protection in the digital realm, featuring papers and discussions from the 2024 CPDP.ai international conference.

The question of governance-whether to lead or be led-has never been more relevant. Thus, the book not only addresses privacy and data protection, but also highlights issues related to the governance of artificial intelligence and the regulatory changes introduced by the EU AI Act.

The book features comprehensive discussions on the adequacy and effectiveness of the governance mechanisms established by the EU AI Act, particularly emphasising standardisation, co-regulation, and human oversight, while also identifying existing gaps in protection. Additionally, it pays special attention to the risks to fundamental rights associated with AI usage by law enforcement agencies, examining whether the current legal framework sufficiently safeguards against these risks. Finally, the book provides an in-depth exploration of deepnude and deepfake technology that generates nude images, as well as the role of AI in the EU's migration management systems.

The chapters in this book provide readers with an opportunity to explore the challenges and developments related to privacy, data protection, and artificial intelligence. By presenting academic insights alongside contributions from practitioners, civil society, and the European Data Protection Supervisor, this interdisciplinary volume encapsulates the essence of the CPDP.ai 2024 conference.

To Govern or To Be Governed, That Is the Question

Data Protection, Privacy and Artificial Intelligence, Volume 17

Political Science and International Studies (R0)

An estimated 75% of the infrastructure that societies will depend on in 2050 does not yet exist, reflecting $139 trillion of investment over the next quarter century. Conventional wisdom regards these forthcoming water networks, roads, energy grids, and data centers as passive backbones of economic life. Centralized challenges this assumption, demonstrating how these systems actively shapes governance by regulating the flow of materials, managing access, and controlling storage.

Centralized examines the oldest and the most contemporary forms of large-scale infrastructure: water and the internet. Drawing on archival documents, engineering blueprints, financial records, and interviews, the book analyzes eight transformative projects over two millennia across the United States, China, Turkey, and Russia. From the Dujiangyan irrigation canals to the creation of TCP/IP protocols, the case studies demonstrate how engineering networks produce predictable bureaucratic structures. Despite their technological differences, hydraulic and digital networks share a unifying logic of design, finance, and administration—one that ultimately consolidates authority.

Built on the work of Keller Easterling, Norbert Wiener, Taisu Zhang, and Paul Edwards, Centralized offers a critical historical perspective on the relationship between technical and social systems.

Preface by Benjamin Bratton. Illustrations by Flora Weil.

In this textbook readers will acquire knowledge of problem-solving and learning to enhance both efficiency and the experience of service users in rapidly changing service environments, that can create new service models. Emphasizing that, above all else, individuals are at the centre of services, the book goes deeply into the nature of public services and their logic-of-practice. By applying learning and problem-solving approaches, the reader gains practical capabilities in addition to an appreciation of the latest research literature. Following a multidisciplinary, international approach, the book suggests a new typology of problem-framing and presents many examples of how new service solutions can be created in any public service context.

The book offers a conceptual toolkit to understand and analyse dynamically changing services and the application of new technologies. Topics covered include pressing issues surrounding public services, such as e-technology, digitalisation, e-services, artificial intelligence, entrepreneurialism, sustainability, climate, inequality, developing economies, and smart cities. Chapters follow a similar structure: issue, problems, what we know, learning framework, worked example, theory and practice conclusions, as well as teacher and learner notes. Addressing advanced undergraduate and graduate students of public administration, public management, political science, sociology, computer science, and information systems, the book will also be a valuable resource for practitioners, i.e. experts and managers in public organizations, professionals in organizations working at the business and public sectors, consultants, and IT suppliers.

Young Academics: Politikwissenschaft

Students of teacher education need to be prepared for increasingly diverse classrooms. Internationalising their studies is one way to make them aware of the many dimensions of diversity and prepare them for their future lives in the classroom. It is important to expose them to international learning opportunities, to enable mobility abroad and implement international modules into their studies. The DAAD project to internationalise teacher education is conducted with partner universities worldwide. In this volume, members from participating universities present conceptual approaches to the internationalisation of teacher education, examples of good practice as well as results from their research. These shall encourage everyone working in teacher education to shape flexible mobility paths within the student journey.

Digitalisation is reshaping adult and continuing education across teaching, institutions, and research. This volume offers an overview of current studies on how digital technologies such as Artificial Intelligence, Virtual Reality, and online learning formats influence educational practice and theory. It discusses opportunities for innovation alongside ethical, organisational, and methodological challenges. Combining empirical and theoretical perspectives, the book presents a comprehensive picture of how digital transformation is shaping adult education in Germany and beyond.
