The volume has been conceptualized with the overarching objective to provide the reader with a collection of thoughtfully selected chapters that critically examine existing literature for an in-depth analysis of institutions through the lens of violence, beyond disciplinary and topical boundaries, from a range of methodologies. The book encourages reflections on the complexities of society, its institutions and gendered norms that enmesh violence and intimate relationships. It further examines the socio-normative contexts within which violence operates as a tool for maintaining inequalities in society. The chapters in this volume attempt to address questions such as: What are the complexities in the relationship between the perpetrator and the victim which sustain and legitimize violence? What are the diverse dimensions of violence in intimate relationships? What role does violence in intimate spaces play in preserving status quo and the pervasive gendered hierarchies within society and its institutions? Who is vulnerable to violence and why? The book covers conversations on intimate space violence and relationships that have not been explored hitherto in mainstream academic debates. The volume pivots violence fundamentally as a product of ¿entitlements¿ based on gendered social hierarchies and critical intersectionalities to examine its manifestations in a variety of intimate situations and relationships beyond socio-cultural, religious and geographical boundaries. </p><div><div>This book addresses the Business Against Domestic Violence (BADV) project launched by the Corporate Governance Forum of Turkey (CGFT), a research center at Sabanci University School of Management. The goal of BADV is to mobilize companies to combat intimate partner violence (IPV) in Turkey. The project was realized in a collaborative partnership with the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA), with the support of Sabanc¿ Foundation and in co-operation with Turkish Industrialists and Business Association (TUSIAD). </div>
<div>The book is divided into two sections. Section 1, which focuses on the project itself, frames the elimination of IPV as an SDG target, and provides a detailed account of the project's motivation, underlying research, project organization, implementation, and outcome. The question of why gender equality and IPV matter for business is also addressed. Lastly, the role of business schools and management scholars in creating practical and actionable knowledge to achieve development goals is discussed, based on the BADV experience. In turn, Section 2 explores the background of the project and sheds a multidisciplinary light on the local context.

</p><p>This book investigates the high prevalence of intimate partner violence (IPV) among African immigrants across the world, addressing unique cultural contexts, acculturative stress, and identity which shapes their experiences. The author examines how migration-related stress, cultural norms, and systemic challenges intersect to influence intimate partner violence dynamics uniquely within the African diaspora. The book utilizes three theoretical frameworks to investigate this question: Urie Bronfenbrenner’s ecological systems theory; John Berry’s acculturation stress theory; and Kimberlé Crenshaw’s intersectionality theory. This book situates the experiences of this unique immigrant population in the literature on IPV. It also provides global context by situating African diaspora experiences within broader discussions of intimate partner violence across immigrant populations. The author highlights the resilience and coping mechanisms of African IPV survivors and offers culturally sensitive strategies for prevention and intervention pathways to empowerment and healing.</p><p></p>

Exploring the Prevalence of Intimate Partner Violence among Africans in the Diaspora

This book presents new perspectives on gender-based violence (GBV) in South Africa. It argues that violence against women is a manifestation of unequal gender relations and harmful manifestations of hegemonic masculinity, which are governed by patriarchal beliefs, institutions and systems. It includes chapters on quantitative research that assess not only the levels and determinants of violence against women but also men¿s attitudes towards gender-based violence, perceptions of violence, the legislative frameworks governing violence against women in South Africa, and the current cases and jurisprudence relating to this scourge.


In spite of its focus on South Africa, the book also provides insights for comparative scholars exploring the value of different constitutional articulations of human rights and how they support (or fail to support) efforts to combat violence against women. By assessing recent incidents and responses to gender-based violence, the book provides a view of not only the societal but also jurisprudential opportunities and pitfalls in this area that may be applicable elsewhere. Gender equality and, central to this, the right of women to live lives free of violence, is a precondition for full democratic participation and is a universal goal. Accordingly, the South African experience contributes to a wider understanding of the possibilities and limitations of societal and legal reform in challenging the ubiquity of violence against women.


The book is aimed at researchers, practitioners, students, professionals and advocates in the field of gender-based violence.</p>
