This book demonstrates how legal knowledge is a vital, empowering tool in human rights education. Despite the centrality of international human rights law to the global rights framework, its role in human rights education (HRE) - particularly in schools and community settings - has been sidelined, dismissed as either too technical or too politically problematic. This book challenges that marginalisation head-on. It examines how legal knowledge is framed, valued, or rejected in the theory and practice of HRE, engaging critically with the prevailing trends in the field: one that gestures toward law but avoids depth, and another that disavows law entirely in favour of culturally embedded alternatives. Through a close reading of scholarship and policy, combined with insights from educational theory and socio-legal studies, the book argues for law's role as a form of "powerful knowledge" in HRE. It contends that access to and understanding of legal norms and mechanisms are not only essential for meaningful rights education but are themselves enabling rights in practice. The book will be of interest to scholars and students of human rights, legal pedagogy, and education policy, as well as practitioners developing HRE programs. It offers a timely, nuanced intervention into a field grappling with deep epistemological and political tensions, and reasserts the value of law in the struggle for rights.

The Role of Law in Human Rights Education

This study develops, from the perspective of European law, a concept for the systemic regulation of disinformation on online platforms aimed at safeguarding the integrity of the public opinion-formation process in the European Union. Against the backdrop of disinformation events between 2016 and 2025 and the changing conditions of platform-based communication, it examines - on the basis of the fundamental rights of the European Union, in particular the scope of protection of freedom of expression under Article 11(1) of the Charter of Fundamental Rights - how proportionate disinformation regulation can be designed within the framework of Articles 34 and 35 of the Digital Services Act and implemented, for instance, through a code of conduct pursuant to Article 45.
 

 The study combines a doctrinal legal analysis of freedom of expression with legal-philosophical and legal-sociological perspectives, drawing on emergence theory to explain how individual disinformative expressions transition from the discursive micro-level to the macro-level of public discourse. On this basis, it develops the concept of disinformation dynamics as an operational point of reference for systemic risks within the meaning of the Digital Services Act.
 

 The result is a proposal for a procedural regulatory architecture that, instead of relying on substantive assessments of truth, is based on a rebuttable presumption of disinformation and, where such suspicion is triggered, enables rights-compliant regulatory measures through a discursive reversal of the burden of proof. An interdisciplinary analysis of AI-based algorithmic detection methods - including knowledge-based, style-based, and dissemination-based approaches - demonstrates the technical feasibility of the concept and identifies the requirements for accuracy, fairness, and explainability in automated disinformation detection.
 

 The study thus contributes to the doctrinal development of European platform regulation and outlines ways to safeguard public opinion formation as a foundation of democracy in the digital sphere.

Business and Human Rights in Africa raises interesting questions about the legitimacy and long-term viability of the business and human rights agenda in Africa, and in developing countries more generally. It explores the key issues for business and human rights in Africa and asks how and to what extent are the UN Guiding Principles changing the law and policy in Africa or the behavior of businesses operating in the continent? The book examines both the international and regional legal and policy initiatives on business and human rights in Africa and how these initiatives are being implemented in selected countries.

One of the most significant debates in international human rights law and in international law generally in the 21st century is about the responsibility of businesses for human rights in their areas of influence. The last decade witnessed significant, arguably monumental, development in global norms pertaining to the human rights obligation of businesses. Of particular significance is the emergence of a distinct business and human rights agenda driven by two normative instruments: the 2008 Protect, Respect and Remedy: a Framework for Business and Human Rights and the 2011 UN Guiding Principles on Business and Human Rights.Business and Human Rights in Africa raises interesting questions about the legitimacy and long-term viability of the business and human rights agenda in Africa, and in developing countries more generally. Focusing in part on the extractive industry it consider the industry standards and best practices as well as the challenges the industry still faces in order to avoid human rights abuses. The book examines and evaluates emerging practices designed to minimize, manage, or mitigate corporate impact on human rights in Africa. It looks at the role of national and regional courts in Africa in ensuring accountability of businesses in Africa as well as considering the possible role for alternative dispute resolution mechanisms in realizing accountability.

This monograph provides an in-depth analysis of Article 7 of the Rome II Regulation, and its interplay with other EU PIL provisions, from a litigation perspective. While calls for the repatriation of heritage have been made since the start of the decolonisation process, it is only in recent years that the debate on returning cultural objects has gained widespread prominence. This has been followed by ongoing efforts from several countries to change the legislation, adopt principles, and invest in provenance research to turn repatriation into a more proactive mechanism. The book tells the story of cultural objects that were housed in European institutions and returned to countries in Africa, Asia, and the Americas. In addition to in-depth analysis of relevant laws and policies, each of the case studies integrates interviews with those who were directly involved in those return processes, as well as those who were impacted by them, including museum staff, government representatives and community members. The book presents previously unheard insights into past return processes, the manifold modalities that such processes have followed, and, at times, unexpected outcomes. This book examines the United Nations Security Council's authorisation of the use of force, considering the extensive body of UN Security Council resolutions across its now eighty years of existence. As one of the established exceptions to the Article 2(4) UN Charter prohibition on the use of force, UN Security Council authorisation of force remains a key focus for both States and scholars alike. Despite the apparent consequences of authorisation, authorising resolutions lack prescribed formats or mandatory content. The UN Security Council has over time, however, developed a consistent practice of prior explicit authorisation. The development of this practice is reflected in a number of essential characteristics within authorising resolutions of the UN Security Council. These include explicit determinations of a threat to international peace and security, the invocation of Chapter VII (or VIII) of the UN Charter, the use of specific authorising language, the inclusion of time or functional limits on authorisation, and the imposition of reporting obligations on those authorised to use force. The book ultimately argues that prior explicit authorisation constitutes a well-established practice, rejecting the legality and admissibility of implicit and retroactive authorisation.
