The rising volume of critique and commentary about the green economy is preceding a much-needed, global understanding of the concept: the principal aim of this book, accordingly, is to provide a detailed analysis of the emergence, anatomy and workings of the green economy. It traces the evolution of the contemporary green economy idea, interrogates the motivations of green economy strategies and explores how processes of economic-environmental change can be managed. The book draws on examples from across the Global North and Global South to contribute a more diverse understanding of the green economy, and provide useful case study material for students on a wide range of courses.

The ‘green economy’ has emerged in recent years as a ‘new’ concept in economic thinking and has quickly become embedded in mainstream policy and financial discourses. The idea of a green economy has been celebrated by those who see it as a welcome change to the organisation of global and national economies that will result in more ecologically sensitive modes of production and consumption. At the same time, the concept has been subjected to intense critique from several quarters, such as green NGOs and activists as another iteration of ‘business as usual’ or as a mask for capitalism’s continuing and worsening impacts on the environment. But this rush to either praise or condemn the concept, seems to have got ahead of developing a thorough understanding of what the green economy actually is in terms of its rationales, actors, modes, areas and sectors of operation. However, this rising volume of critique and commentary are preceding a much-needed, global understanding of the phenomenon of the green economy. Only then can we really begin to make informed assessments of its strengths, weaknesses and challenges. This book traces the evolution and emergence of the contemporary green economy idea, interrogates the motivations of green economy strategies and explores how processes of economic-environmental change can be managed. The book also provides a global overview of the green economy, drawing on examples from across the Global North and Global South. As much writing on the green economy has, to date, focused almost exclusively on Europe and North America, the book contributes a more diverse understanding of the green economy, and provides useful case study material for students on a wide range of courses.

The dominant discourse views the Indian economy's transformation over several decades as a progression towards a grand, unified, and dynamic market economy. Critiquing this discourse, The Nonfarm Economy illustrates the prevalence and intensification of 'structural dualism'. Using both theoretical and empirical perspectives, Bhattacharjee, Chakrabarti, and Rajeev analyse the origins of this persistence and the deepening of a dualistic developmental pattern. By studying the Indian rural economy and parts of the rural Global South, they demonstrate how the contemporary capital-centric growth process itself has induced the intensification of dualism, alongside factors such as population growth and land fragmentation. Only a limited segment of the impoverished population can integrate with the expanding circuits of capital using their skills, resources, and networks; a large mass of people is thus pushed towards dispossession and exclusion. The book further examines the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic on this development pattern, demonstrating how it has intensified the phenomenon of structural dualism. Contrary to the current prescriptions fixated on formal sector growth and policies extending government support, the authors posit a labour-focused (cluster-based) development model and offer constructive policy recommendations for achieving inclusive growth.

Equality law is audist. Deaf communities around the world continue to encounter Deaf Legal Exclusion through legal frameworks that define them narrowly and restrict their rights. This book examines why these frameworks have not delivered equality in practice. It argues that the core issue is structural misrecognition: law protects deaf people only when they accept a definition based on impairment. Sign language, culture and community are treated as secondary. What appears to be inclusion is often a Deaf Legal Illusion: equality claimed in principle but absent in practice. The book analyses five models used to categorise deaf people in law and policy: disability, language minority, culturo-linguistic community, ethnic group and Indigenous group. Some appear in legislation; others are found in scholarship and advocacy. Each reflects only part of deaf people's lives. Drawing on doctrinal and socio-legal analysis of the Equality Act 2010, case law of the ECtHR, and the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities, the book critiques how equality law relies on narrow definitions of fairness. It explores formal, substantive and transformative precepts of equality, assessing their ability to reflect deaf people's experiences. It identifies the audist assumptions built into legal systems that expect deaf people to adapt to hearing norms, while withholding full recognition of sign language and community belonging. In response, the book proposes the Deaf Rights Model, which brings the five models together as complementary rather than competing. Alongside Deaf Equality Concepts, it offers a framework in which sign language, culture and community become central to legal thinking about equality. The Deaf Legal Dilemma establishes Deaf Legal Studies as a field grounded in the priorities and expertise of deaf communities. It invites lawmakers, practitioners and scholars to rethink the purpose of the law and the structures through which deaf people are recognised.

Es werden grundlegende formale Modelle demokratischer Entscheidungsprozesse dargestellt. Ein besonderes Gewicht dieser politisch-ökonomischen Analyse liegt auf Theorien, die das Zustandekommen oder das Scheitern von Reformen untersuchen. Außerdem werden theoretische Modelle der politischen Einflussnahme von Interessengruppen vorgestellt. Im dritten Teil geht es um Anwendungen der polit-ökonomischen Grundmodelle auf wichtige wirtschaftspolitische Entscheidungen. Das Buch ist als eigenständige Grundlage für eine Einführung in die Wirtschaftspolitik in einem anspruchsvollen Bachelorstudium gedacht. With a chapter devoted to each of the UN's Sustainable Development Goals, this edited volume explores the evidence that corruption is a strong impediment to achieving the SDGs and that strong anti-corruption policy is essential if any are to be achieved. For some of the goals there is much existing theory and evidence which will be summarised and made accessible to an interdisciplinary audience. For example, studies strongly suggest that corruption is associated with greater poverty (SDG 1) and lower growth rates (SDG 8). Furthermore, there is considerable research on the effects of corruption on the scope for decent work and growth (SDG 8) and an established connection between corruption and industry, innovation, and infrastructure (SDG 9). In other areas, the research is more scant. For example, there is limited work on how corruption can be a contributing factor to food insecurity and famine (SDG 2). There has been little work specifically on corruption and sustainable cities and communities (SDG 11) and responsible consumption and production (SDG 12). Similarly, more work is needed on the effects of corruption on climate action (SDG 13), life below water (SDG 14), and life on land (SDG15). In these areas the chapter surveys the research that does exist and motivates further study.This book will be an essential research and reference guide to readers interested in political economy, sustainable development, social issues, politics and development studies.
