In works such as The Mask of Anarchy? and "A Philosophical View of Reform,? Matthew C. Borushko argues, Percy Bysshe Shelley intervenes in the reformist crisis of agency occasioned by the dramatic historical and political violence that characterized Britain during the Romantic period. He shows how Shelley's body or work reconceived the possibility of the political possibilities of art and explores the implications of Shelley's nonviolence for later artists and reformers such as George Bernard Shaw to Mohandas K. Gandhi.

From the French Revolution, Reign of Terror, and Napoleonic Wars abroad to the dramatic social changes wrought by industrialization and political agitation at home, the Romantic age in Britain was characterized by dramatic historical and political violence. As a result, the reform movement of the early nineteenth century faced a crisis of agency, in the wake of both Waterloo and Peterloo, that centered on the role of violence in the hope for social progress. In poems such as The Mask of Anarchy and political writings such as "A Philosophical View of Reform," Matthew C. Borushko argues, Percy Bysshe Shelley intervenes in this reformist crisis of agency with a highly original political program of nonviolence rooted in the redefining of aesthetics as the primary site for a critique of the violence of post-revolutionary Europe. Grounded in the dynamic historical contexts in which Shelley wrote and informed by twentieth-century theory, Shelley’s Romantic Nonviolence shows how Shelley’s body of work reconceived the possibility of the political possibilities of art and explores the implications of Shelley's nonviolence for later artists and reformers such as George Bernard Shaw to Mohandas K. Gandhi.

A provocative letter from a prominent eighteenth-century British noblewoman, Henrietta Howard, to her close friend Mary Hervey is a rare survivor of the informal, collaborative satires created by court women in this period. This particular June 1729 artifact contains a witty and light-hearted list of imaginary portraits, most of which refer to a notable political figure through references to specific paintings, sculptures, engravings, ceramics, textiles and book illustrations. Through a close reading of archival manuscripts, published correspondences and art historical treatises, Eric Weichel explores the cultural milieu and historical legacy of this remarkable text. Constrained by strict standards of moral propriety, the writerâEUR(TM)s overt discussions of sexuality in this letter are encoded through a system of embedded jokes and mythological references. Weichel argues that through Lady HerveyâEUR(TM)s mention of popular works of art, such as the Hampton Court tapestry cartoons by Raphael, the âEUR(TM)Jupiter and GanymedeâEUR(TM) motif in country house dÃ(c)cor, or the illustrated fables of Jean de La Fontaine, she alludes specifically to her wider circleâEUR(TM)s knowledge of adultery, queerness, sexual violence, and divorce among their peer group. In her imaginary portraits, Hervey also shows an interest in feminist education and literature, political and religious patronage, and contemporary news events.

When Val and Milly find out they're both pregnant, the friends decide that they want to be near each other as they raise their children. Val, a journalist, moves to the posh Brooklyn neighbourhood where Milly, an internet-famous travel writer and influencer, lives with her husband, Harris, a restaurateur. The old friends attempt to pick up where they left off a decade ago, when they were best friends and roommates, before a shared tragedy set their lives on divergent paths. But motherhood hits them each differently. Val is left alone to take care of her newborn daughter as she remembers and retraces her own losses as a daughter. Meanwhile, Milly seems well-suited to new motherhood since she has the help of a supportive young nanny, Cleo, and continues to share online about her beautiful, affluent life, which now includes her baby. As Val begins to fall apart, Milly makes a generous offer: why don't they put the two girls into a nanny share? Cleo can care for them, and Milly won't expect Val to pay more than she can. Val accepts, and she begins to crawl out from under her solitude and unhappiness at being a mother; she forms a friendship with Cleo, a Brooklyn native, and an aspiring musician who depends on her paycheck from Milly. But as Cleo cares for their daughters, she becomes enmeshed in the unspoken tensions between Milly and Val that are finally rising to the surface as they navigate new identities as mothers. The three women wade through shifting allegiances, delicate power relations, and long-guarded silences as they decide who they will be to one another, and what it is they each desire for the future.
