"An exploration of the impact corporate capitalism has on Black popular culture in light of postmodernism ideology"--

Stephen C. Ferguson II provides a philosophical examination of Black popular culture for the first time. From extensive discussion of the philosophy and political economy of Hip-Hop music through to a developed exploration of the influence of the postmodernism-poststructuralist ideology on African American studies, he argues how postmodernism ideology plays a seminal role in justifying the relationship between corporate capitalism and Black popular culture.
 
 Chapters cover topics such as cultural populism, capitalism and Black liberation, the philosophy of Hip-Hop music, and Harold Cruse’s influence on the “cultural turn” in African American studies. Ferguson combines case studies of past and contemporary Black cultural and intellectual productions with a Marxist ideological critique to provide a cutting edge reflection on the economic structure in which Black popular culture emerged. He highlights the contradictions that are central to the juxtaposition of Black cultural artists as political participants in socioeconomic struggle and the political participants who perform the rigorous task of social criticism.
 
 Adopting capitalism as an explanatory framework, Ferguson investigates the relationship between postmodernism as social theory, current manifestations of Black popular culture, and the theoretical work of Black thinkers and scholars to demonstrate how African American studies have been shaped.

Nadine Shah. Singer, songwriter, musician, activist, mixed-race, thirtysomething, successful, outspoken. That's the tagline, at least... As a professional musician, I decided long ago what truly defines success. Everything else it just a bonus. Famous enough to be scrutinised in the supermarket, but not famous enough to enjoy the perks that come with 'celebrity', I don't know any other life.From my various accolades and media presence, it might seem like I've it made it, but really I just try my best to do what I do best. I imagine that much of my story is yours, too, even if you're not a musician. I know you sometimes feel just as inadequate as I do scrolling through Instagram, viewing 'better' depictions of ourselves. But none of it is real. To me, what makes a good lyricist is the ability to speak for everyone and to everyone. I don't claim to be unique; I don't have any answers to the big questions. But I am willing to share my thoughts on the world with anyone who is willing to listen. This book is a collection of musings on what makes me jump out of bed and what makes me hide under the covers. Sometimes we need to read other people's stories in order to process our own. It is not just biological life (biopolitics), nor even political death (necropolitics) that has power, but also regimes of enjoyment. In simple terms the paradoxical, ambivalent and traumatic realm of the sexual: a deadly enjoyment that demands satisfaction yet cannot be sated. This is Patipolitics, from the Latin patior- to suffer, which for psychoanalysis is also to enjoy.

The body is governed by a dizzying array of institutions: the family, social media, religion and the culture industries. These sites provide contexts for enjoying the body such as: self-image, object choice, identification, erogenous zones, taboos, codes of sexual morality, inhibitions, violence, and bodily abjection. But it is the ways in which these modalities are harnessed by apparatuses of power which makes them patipolitical.

Patipolitics examines how the body is instrumentalised, weaponised and fantasized through science, technology and capitalism. After highlighting the destructive and oppressive elements of patipolitics, the book elucidates the positive and generative dimensions to the patipolitical. The female body and its place in the masculine imaginary obscures a genuine enigma about the sexual body and power. Ultimately if patipolitics is to be affirmative as opposed to destructive we must ask what alternative future it can help us to imagine?
