Volume 1 of A History of Family Law in Europe examines how, and the extent to which, marriage formation and dissolution are regulated in the written texts of the Catholic, Protestant, and Orthodox traditions. The contributors analyse the respective traditions' teachings on marriage formation, marital impediments, and dissolubility, including these traditions' views as to the socially binding character of these teachings. Jurisdiction-specific chapters focusing on countries across Northern, Central, Southern, and Eastern Europe examine the regulation of marriage formation and dissolution in the context of religious and other cultural influences. Sie vermitteln ein anschauliches Bild der reichen materiellen Kultur dieser Region. Durch die Kombination von Originalen, Vergleichsfunden und Archivalien konnten über 240 Grabkomplexe methodisch rekonstruiert werden. Diese wissenschaftliche Re-Kontextualisierung erschließt sowohl die Bestattungssitten als auch die sozialen Strukturen und macht Ramutten zu einem Schlüsselplatz für die Erforschung der Kultur der Kuren und ihrer Verflechtungen im baltischen Raum.

In diesem Band behandelt Thomas Karmann erstmals umfassend die patristische Rezeption und Auslegung des Stammbaums Jesu im Matthäusevangelium. Der Band erschließt die gesamte lateinische und griechische Literatur bis zum Ende der Antike für das Thema. Dadurch kommen, anders als in den üblichen auf den Mainstream fokussierten Darstellungen, auch die zahlreichen Nebenströmungen antiker Auslegung zur Geltung. Bislang wenig beachtete, aber durchaus gewichtige Exegeten wie der irische Gelehrte Aileran oder Theodor von Herakleia am Marmarameer erhalten die Aufmerksamkeit, die sie verdienen. Diese Erschließungsleistung ist auch deshalb bemerkenswert, weil ein großer Teil dieser Texte bislang noch unübersetzt war. Thomas R. Karmann selbst bietet neben detaillierten Analysen und Auswertungen mehrere deutsche Erstübersetzungen der für sein Thema relevanten Passagen. Damit hat Thomas Karmann ein Grundlagenwerk geschaffen, auf das sich alle künftigen exegetischen und patristischen Arbeiten zum matthäischen Stammbaum stützen können.
