How to create our industrial future with inspiration and lessons from the originators of the industrial revolution. Climate change, global disruption, and labor scarcity are forcing us to rethink the underlying principles of industrial society. In The New Lunar Society, David Mindell envisions this new industrialism from the fundamentals, drawing on the eighteenth century when first principles were formed at the founding of the Industrial Revolution. While outlining the new industrialism, he tells the story of the Lunar Society, a group of engineers, scientists, and industrialists who came together to apply the principles of the Enlightenment to industrial processes. Those principles were collaboration, the marriage of practical and scientific knowledge, and the belief that the world could progress through making things. Between 1968 and 1975, there was a subtle thawing of relations between East and West, for which Brezhnev coined the name Détente, and - perhaps - a chance to end the Cold War. The leaders of the United States and the Soviet Union, Richard Nixon and Leonid Brezhnev, hoped to forge a new relationship between East and West. Yet, the greatest changes of the era took place outside the sphere of international diplomacy. The 1960s brought social collision across the world, from the anti-war protests in America to the student demonstrations on the streets of Paris, and Mao Zedong's Red Guards in China. A new generation, whom advertising executives dubbed the baby-boomers, brought new attitudes to towards sex, gender, race, the environment and religion. In this book, Richard Crowder explores the years of Détente, and introduces us to the key players of the era, whose stories form the narrative of this book.

The book surveys the history and teachings of Taoism (Daoism) over the course of Chinese civilization, and explores themes and ideas that interest modern minds. The religions of Asia continually fascinate people around the world. During the 20th century, the Taoist (Daoist) tradition of China became well-known. But even at the century's end, our understandings of Taoism was limited to what scholars of Asia and Western lands had revealed. Few knew of the probing researches also being conducted by scholars of Russia, particularly Evgeny Torchinov (1956-2003). Torchinov, Russia's leading authority on Taoism, died suddenly before completing the final English edition of his comprehensive introduction, Daosizm: Opyt Istoriko-religioznogo Opisaniia. Here at last is that English edition and we see Taoism through fresh eyes, revealing new insights into the minds and lives of centuries of Chinese Taoists.

Anti-Semitism and Islamophobia are on the rise in twenty-first-century Europe, but these notions of the malevolent, conspiring Jew or Muslim are far more than a medieval trope. Over the last millennium, deep currents of exclusion have shaped not only modern relationships between majorities and minorities, but the distinctive Western relationship between state and society. This volume asks an important question: why is it that, in a period when Europe's Islamic south and Catholic and Orthodox east remained home to religiously diverse communities, the Western fringes of Latin Christendom instead rid themselves of Jews and Muslims, through exploitation, mass murder, deportations and enslavement? Ariel Salzmann identifies the intersecting structural and sociological roots of this peculiarly Western approach, from rapid consolidation of secular polities and commercial markets in the Crusades era; to the ideology and practice of ritualised, politicised violence against minorities; to distinctive forms of economic protectionism arising from the use of minorities and their resources as bargaining chips. 'The Exclusionary West' shows that the medieval exclusion of minorities is bound up with the very foundation of Western European nation-states, informing the basic rights of civil citizenship and shaping Western ideas of identity and belonging. These legacies retain their insidious but potent power today.

After the German and Italian attack on Yugoslavia, Croatian fascists - the Ustasha - declared the independence of Croatia in April 1941. This short-lived state became one of the most significant theatres of genocide of wartime Europe, with these independent nationalists committing acts of violence against Serbs, Jews, and Roma.

Intertwined Genocides explores the patterns and the internal logic of the genocides carried out by Croatian fascists - the Ustasha - against Serbs, Jews, and Roma during the Second World War. Korb argues that the Croatian fascists were not German puppets, but strong-minded and largely independent agents, despite the German and Italian occupation of their country. They tried to transform their short-lived wartime Croatian state into a mono-ethnic nation-state by force. Whilst pursuing their violent agenda, they soon lost control over much of their territory owing to the armed resistance of their victims. What followed was an escalation of multiple layers of collective violence: local genocide, the German Holocaust, the occupiers' war against partisans, and an escalating civil war, all inextricably intertwined.

Because of this mix of perpetrators and their competing agendas, and because of the dynamics of violence and counter-violence, resistance and revenge, aggression and fear, Croatia became one of the most violent venues during the Second World War. Intertwined Genocides shows that South-eastern European nationalists carried out genocide independently of the Germans. Moreover, Alexander Korb brings critically important insights to the histories of violence, genocide, and its perpetrators: in a multi-ethnic society, genocide cannot be studied as an isolated phenomenon. Its dynamic escalation had dramatic effects on every ethnic group, and the victims' responses had a significant impact on the course of events throughout the Second World War, and into the latter half of the twentieth-century.

Utilising the author's own experiences, it explores whether there can be an applied theology, rooted in the living 'tradition' of feminist and queer theology, that begins to question classical definitions of the 'sane' and 'insane'. This book offers a transgressive theology of healing and wellbeing based on radical feminist Christological understanding. Therefore, it will be of keen interest to scholars of Religion and Theology, as well as those working in Psychiatry, Mental Health and Disability Studies.

Too frequently, theology has addressed issues of mental health from a largely pastoral and detached observational perspective. This book focuses primarily on the context of British recruitment of slaves in its Caribbean colonies and illustrates the significant contribution that these colonies made, beyond supplying slave labor, to the conquests of Guadeloupe and Martinique and of Havana in Cuba in an important theatre of the conflict.

This book explores twenty-first century environment-themed advertising with a global reach in relation to three key emerging persuasive themes: governance, morality and transnational rhetoric. Adopting a social semiotic approach, and exploring key examples including Greenpeace's "Everything is NOT Awesome" brandjacking advert, Volkswagen's "Think Blue" campaign and Unilever's "Why Bring a Child Into This World?" advert, Alexander puts forward a number of observations about the ideological character and function of environmental advertising as a new form of transnational persuasion.

Environmental Communication is a growing area of academic enquiry. But, whilst there are key texts on environmental communication and new texts on environment-themed media, there is, as yet, no book specifically devoted to "green" (environment themed) advertising. Filling this lacuna, this book explores twenty-first century environment-themed advertising with a global reach in relation to three key emerging persuasive themes: governance, morality and transnational rhetoric. Such environment-themed advertising with transnational reach, addressed to transnational publics and produced by global actors (from NGOs to multinationals to the United Nations to celebrities), is now a significant form of environmental communication. This book considers that form and its meanings; the "environmental imaginary" it builds in the minds of its publics, its ideological and emotional landscapes, and its limitations. Adopting a social semiotic approach, and exploring key examples including Greenpeace’s "Everything is NOT Awesome" brandjacking advert, Volkswagen’s "Think Blue" campaign and Unilever’s "Why Bring a Child Into This World?" advert, Alexander puts forward a number of observations about the ideological character and function of environmental advertising as a new form of transnational persuasion. Studies in Early Medieval History

This study is a vital reassessment of neglected medieval ruler King Carloman, who is so often found in the shadow of Charlemagne. Te information we have about him, transmitted by the Carolingian narrative texts or documents, has rarely been investigated before now. Marco Stoffella draws on a wide range of sources including letters, charters and diplomas to show that Carloman played a central political role in the Frankish kingdom which he ruled for three years. Stoffella suggests that it was Carloman, not Charlemagne, who was the Frankish king who married Gerberga, the Lombard princess. This emerging hypothesis leads to a reconsideration of further aspects of both Carloman's and Charlemagne's early careers. Evidence from minor annals that have been relatively disregarded until now, together with a fresh scrutiny of Pippin's and Carloman's diplomas, suggests that it was possibly Carloman rather than Charlemagne who was Pippin's first-born son. Following this interpretation, Carloman, Charlemagne and Dynastic Rivalries in the Eighth Century reflects on the extent and successfulness of Carolingian royal and imperial propaganda which re-shaped the early stages of Charlemagne's career, stressing his authority and blaming Carloman and his followers for the conflicts that emerged in Francia and in Italy between 768 and 771. The pro-Charlemagne sources even obscured the fate of the young king, and completely ignored the destiny of his wife and children. These new findings and arguments are expertly framed here and are of huge significance to our understanding of Charlemagne's conquest of the Lombard kingdom and policy south of the Alps.

The full texts of both 1680 editions of Elizabeth Cary's History of Edward II are here reproduced completely, along with an extensive introduction including biographical, cultural, and literary commentary on Elizabeth Cary, and also background on the debate surrounding the texts' authorship. This volume will be of interest to literary scholars working on Early Modern women as well as to historians and queer theorists, both of whom have made Edward II an important intellectual site in the last generation of scholarship.

The full texts of both 1680 editions of Elizabeth Cary's History of Edward II are here reproduced completely, along with an extensive introduction including biographical, cultural, and literary commentary on Elizabeth Cary, and also background on the debate surrounding the texts' authorship. In the recovery of women writers of early modern England, Elizabeth Tanfield Cary, Viscountess Falkland, has drawn substantial interest. Swan examines the post-publication history of both 1680 editions, revealing how the many hands at work in various subsequent editions have resulted in the obfuscation of the textual history, which has, in the past, led to the misattribution of the history to Henry Cary, Elizabeth's husband.  The reproduction of both versions allows scholars to easily compare the two, which is important in order to understand Cary's reworking of her text from early to late drafts. Both versions represent intentions and socially received states which are useful in presenting the text, in documenting Cary's changing attitudes and discursive strategies in the mid-1620's-the period of composition for all the manuscript states and a period of particular biographical significance-and in accounting for the more recent reception of the history.   Swan showcases here how Cary contributes significantly both to the development of resistance theory (essential to democratic-republican ideals at the root of Anglo-American politics and government), and to the development of non-fiction prose style in English. This volume will be of interest to literary scholars working on Early Modern women as well as to historians and queer theorists, both of whom have made Edward II an important intellectual site in the last generation of scholarship.
