Freemasonry and Democracy: Its Evolution in North America

Routledge Studies in Social and Political Thought

Political and Cultural Conflict Today addresses the fierce animosity splitting factions in Western democracies, with a primary focus on the USA. The author demonstrates that today's societal divisions stem from a collision between the two divergent forms of Modernity that emerged in the 17th and 18th centuries-here called Modernity 1 and Modernity 2.Modernity shattered the God- (or gods-)infused hierarchies that once ordered society, liberating individuals to become responsible for themselves. Modernity 1 expresses this liberation through freedom and individual rights grounded in reason and evidence, mandating collaboration in a world requiring empirical justification. This gave rise to the group structures of democracy and science. However, the very freedom gained through Modernity's destruction of traditional hierarchies also enabled individual beliefs untethered from objective reality; thus Modernity 2 was born. The author argues that the clash between these streams manifests today in the rejection of scientific authority, the resurgence of populist movements, and the deepening cultural divide between elites and populists.Fleming's clearly written, cross-disciplinary analysis aims at defusing the conflict by demonstrating that both sides are parts of Modernity, shaped by the same historical circumstances. It represents a major contribution to sociology, social theory, political science, philosophy, cultural studies, and history, whilst also resonating with general readers seeking to understand contemporary polarization and the tensions intrinsic to modern life.

The Souls of Black Folk: Essays and Sketches is a 1903 work of American literature by W. E. B. Du Bois. It is a seminal work in the history of sociology and a cornerstone of African-American literature.

The book contains several essays on race, some of which had been published earlier in The Atlantic Monthly. To develop this work, Du Bois drew from his own experiences as an African American in American society. Outside of its notable relevance in African-American history, The Souls of Black Folk also holds an important place in social science as one of the early works in the field of sociology.

In The Souls of Black Folk, Du Bois used the term "double consciousness", perhaps taken from Ralph Waldo Emerson ("The Transcendentalist" and "Fate"), applying it to the idea that black people must have two fields of vision at all times. They must be conscious of how they view themselves, as well as being conscious of how the world views them.

Why Big Labor moved to the right— and the fight ahead for the left to win back America’s working class Unions helped construct the American middle class, defeat Jim Crow, and advance progressive rights, but in Trump’s America, the labor movement is changing. In Big Labor's Big Shift, journalist Nathan Bomey explores how Big Labor and the working class are no longer an automatic ally of the American left. Fueled by decades of economic decline, political disillusionment, and cultural disenfranchisement, new politically nebulous and economically populist leaders in the movement are building a powerful new movement based on class warfare that prizes wage and benefit gains over traditional progressive priorities. Through original reporting and first-hand interviews, Bomey traces key events that have led to this political shift. Bomey reveals: -At the Teamsters, president Sean O’Brien is cozying up to Donald Trump and blasting Democrats as tools of big business, even showing up at the Republican National Convention to deliver his message. -At the United Auto Workers, president Shawn Fain is seizing an opportunity to break the free trade consensus in Washington. The devout Christian, who wields religious rhetoric from the stump, is aligning with the Trump White House on tariffs and blasting Democrats for aggressively pursuing electric vehicles to fight climate change. Bomey shows how the two interconnected phenomena represent a massive political realignment—not just along cultural and nationalism lines, but of the working class itself away from its historic roots in the Democratic party. Urgent and compelling, Big Labor's Big Shift encapsulates the fight for the soul of the union movement.

Big Labor's Big Shift

This book explores the historical, comparative and global dimensions of the constitutional phenomenon. From the origins of constitutionalism to the diverse trajectories of North American and European constitutionalism, the book considers pivotal moments in the emergence and evolution of formal Constitutions as the main structure of constitutional governance. It presents a critical inquiry into the realities that lie beneath the surface of formal constitutional documents. From the struggles for democratic governance in Latin America to Asia's delicate balance between tradition and modernity and Africa's post-colonial arrangements, the book poses a critical query: amidst the promises of democratic ideals, do formal Constitutions always translate into effective governance? What are the lessons of 'facade' Constitutions on the tension between formal documents and the realities of governance? The book explores the past and present of constitutional governance in the first quarter of the 21st century and offers insights on the future of constitutionalism. By assessing the normative quality of Constitutions and exploring the intrinsic link between them and representation, it offers an understanding of the essence and trajectories of constitutional thought and practice. The Rise of Constitutionalism is a must-read for anyone fascinated by the enduring legacy and evolving nature of the constitutional phenomenon.

Charlotte Perkins Gilman (née Perkins; July 3, 1860 - August 17, 1935), also known by her first married name Charlotte Perkins Stetson, was an American humanist, novelist, writer, lecturer, advocate for social reform, and eugenicist. She was a utopian feminist and served as a role model for future generations of feminists because of her unorthodox concepts and lifestyle. She has been inducted into the National Women's Hall of Fame. Her best remembered work today is her semi-autobiographical short story "The Yellow Wallpaper", which she wrote after a severe bout of postpartum psychosis.

Kamal Shair's book is a classic rags to riches story: the village boy, who with determination and education, achieves business success, wealth, more wealth, and then influence and power. What makes it unusual is that it emanates from the Arab world. Rarely among Arabs have individuals from thoroughly modest backgrounds, with no access to links, networks or connections become truly global commercial players. Shair was born in a small town in what was then Transjordan and dragged himself through school (his mother was illiterate), moved to college in Beirut, then sailed off to America (Michigan and Yale) and returned to the Middle East to create a multinational corporate empire engaged in trade, construction and manufacturing. Dar al Handasah - Arabic for House of Engineers - was founded in a small flat in Beirut and today, spans the globe with offices in 37 countries. In its early years, Dar al Handasah fought off competition from established western consultancies to win contracts for prestige engineering throughout the Middle East. Eventually, its activities extended further to Europe, the United States, Africa and Asia. By not following the usual pattern of patronage and favours, Kamal Shair applied a fresh kind of ethic in an environment with a loosely-structured business ethic. In the process, he lived through and witnessed at first hand and at close quarters some of the most dramatic events of the modern Arab world. This is quite an extraordinary tale and a very original prism through which to read the turbulent post-World War II history of the Middle East. At the same time we see the growth, despite all the odds, of one of the world's great engineering and business enterprises in a narrative of epic and inspirational proportions.
