This book explores how law can safeguard the marine environment in the era of deep-sea mining.In our increasingly interconnected and resource-intensive world, the demand for mineral resources has reached unprecedented levels. Rapid industrialization, technological advancements, and a growing global population have intensified our reliance on minerals: for electronics, renewable energy systems, infrastructure, and manufacturing.This escalating demand has pushed humanity to explore new frontiers, with the deep sea emerging as a potential reservoir of untapped resources. As terrestrial deposits become harder to access, the allure of deep-sea minerals grows ever more compelling.Yet, with opportunity comes responsibility. Balancing economic interests with the preservation of fragile and largely unexplored deep-sea ecosystems requires robust and enforceable legal frameworks. Since the adoption of the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea in 1982, international law has sought to govern ocean resources while protecting the environment.This book offers a meticulous examination of these legal frameworks, environmental considerations, and the governance of deep-sea mineral exploration. This book offers a comprehensive exploration of the struggle against smog in Małopolska, a province in the EU member state Poland. Although there is extensive literature on pollution, the perspective offered by the social sciences is rarely used to address this critical issue.&nbsp;
 
 Pursuing a socio-legal approach, the book examines the social and political processes behind the implementation of parts of the EU’s anti-air pollution policies and regulations. The case of Małopolska is particularly interesting for two reasons. First, because the region – and its capital, Kraków – were once confronted with severe smog, which led to the premature deaths of thousands of citizens. Despite the tremendous scale of the problem, public awareness remained surprisingly low. Second, because in the 2010s, a massive social movement emerged that pressured the local government to introduce two pioneering measures: a total ban on coal and wood heating in Kraków, and a gradual ban on inefficient furnaces in the rest of the region.&nbsp;
 
 The book provides a detailed account of these processes and assesses the effectiveness of the attendant measures, thereby contributing to the broader literature on effective tools for cleaner air. It offers a valuable resource for anyone interested in addressing complex societal challenges through the law, and for all agencies involved in combating environmental issues, especially through the social sciences insights it shares.

Adopting a multidisciplinary approach to climate adjudication, this open access book addresses how adjudicators decide cases by considering the influence of psychology, philosophy, legal education, film, literature, political economy, political ecology, judicial appointments, history, and climate science on their decision-making and ultimately on the (inconsistent) outcomes in climate cases. Drawing upon the humanities, science of climate change and/or social sciences to identify extra-legal factors that may drive the decision-making processes and outcomes of climate cases, this book uses case studies from different jurisdictions across the globe, addressing climate cases decided or pending in Africa, Asia, Europe, Latin and North America, and Oceania. In all, the volume will: - Engage with extra-legal influence to how show judges and arbitrators make their decisions in climate cases, shedding light on the inconsistent responses that climate cases have generated so far - Challenge assumptions of legal universalism, by recognising differences in how the law works in various - Inform actors involved in climate litigation (lawyers, judges, arbitrators, disputants), policymakers, and the public about how cases are decided.
