Suman D: The Last Apartment in Istanbul

The Last Apartment in Istanbul

For American workers, the social contract is broken. This book gives a firsthand view of where the breaks occurred, and a prescription for rebuilding it to give workers their due. With AI making the decisions and CEOs and moguls making the money, sometimes it seems that most workers today might as well be drones. If not for a long string of missed opportunities over the last 50 years, it might have been different. In Roads Not Taken, Thomas Kochan reviews the turning points where the social contract fractured and broke, reducing workers’ voices as well as their compensation, benefits, and status. And in the lessons learned from these historical examples, he identifies the foundation for building a new labor relations system that ensures workers will share in the benefits from AI and puts America on course for an innovative and durable social contract at work. As a longtime advisor to government, labor, and management leaders, Kochan offers an eyewitness perspective on the mounting mistakes made in America’s labor relations system beginning, roughly, with Ronald Reagan’s firing of striking air traffic controllers in 1981. His book makes a strong case for new strategies on the part of labor unions and other worker advocacy groups, business, and government—strategies not wedded to the legacy labor law and practice that have failed American workers for so long. Recasting the social contract on this basis, Kochan insists, is key to rebuilding our democracy and its institutions after the damage wrought in recent years.

Lessons for Building a New Social Contract at Work

Roads Not Taken

This open access book argues that the scarcity created by the under-production of vaccines during the Covid-19 years was an entirely predictable, even legitimate consequence of how the international patent system works. Far from being a technical sub-discipline of intellectual property law that simply protects inventions, the international patent system is prismatic of the ways in which we fail to adapt to the challenges of our times: patent rights are intended to incentivise innovation for societal benefit, but in fact facilitate predictable injustice. The patent system ignores the care-constituted nature of our lives, prioritising limiting notions of fairness at the cost of structural harms. The Social Life of Intellectual Property proposes an ethic of just care to temper justice in the global governance of technology. It explores intellectual property as recurring social processes and explains why individual agency and shared responsibility are implicated. On an ecologically imperilled planet, and in a time between pandemics, we must reckon with what we are socialised to believe is legally possible. Justice, Patents, and Care

The Social Life of Intellectual Property

What if the biggest obstacle to solving our problems is nothing more than a failure to believe that we can?Rick Caruso has spent his life stepping optimistically into places where other people see no way forward by asking a deceptively simple question: What can we do to make this better? From his appointment as Commissioner to the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power and later the City's troubled Police Department, to the creation of his bold and innovative real estate ventures including L.A.'s world-renowned retail center The Grove, Caruso built a reputation for finding steadfast solutions even in the face of staunch adversity. By employing the great teachers of experience and curiosity, he continues to do what he can to improve Los Angeles, the city he loves, and in Breaking New Ground, he shares lessons learned along the way--while offering us all a path forward to a better future.Again and again, Caruso discovered that breakthroughs rarely come from knowing everything at the outset. They come from asking better questions, bringing the right people into the room, listening without ego, separating ideology from reality, and refusing to give up until workable solutions emerge. Ultimately, they require a steadfast dedication to the belief that there is always a solution and that defeat is not an option.Breaking New Ground is the story of how his philosophy was forged--from the examples of immigrant grandparents and a father who lost one fortune and built another, to Caruso's own successes, failures, public battles, family life, faith, and unexpected turns through business and government.Caruso is less interested in prescribing a formula for becoming successful than in exploring how successful problem-solvers think: how they distinguish what matters from what merely makes noise; how they balance conviction with compromise; how they recognize when conventional wisdom has stopped working; and how they remain fearless enough to see difficult decisions through.Part memoir, part argument, and part blueprint for action, Breaking New Ground offers a timely proposition for anyone confronting a problem that feels too complicated, entrenched, or divisive to solve. There is always another way forward. Sometimes you simply have to be willing to build it.

This book explores how COVID-19 represents an inflection point for re-thinking and re-making democracy across the English-speaking world in an age where states are facing a future of overlapping crises. Years after the unprecedented COVID-19 pandemic started to unfold, have we yet learned the deep lessons essential to maintaining and improving democracy to meet crisis challenges? Produced with the benefit of distance from the most acute period of the pandemic, the book contextualises the COVID-19 crisis as revealing pre-existing vulnerabilities and intensifying challenges of governance, inclusion, and distrust, while also spurring democratic innovation and shifting the parameters for reform. Six national case studies - Australia, Ireland, Canada, Aotearoa New Zealand, UK and USA - reveal the heterogeneity of the Anglosphere as an imagined democratic space. Viewed in the round, pandemic responses ranged from the chaotic to the internationally lauded, although even the latter have featured acute deficiencies in democratic practice, which underscores the need to gather the lessons learned. Yet, in all states, the public and political temptation to simply move on, in an act of communal forgetting and collective return to "normalcy," presents a real risk of failing to prepare for more democratic future crisis responses. This collection takes the long view, approaching its subject from multiple perspectives that examine the heterogeneity of the Anglosphere as an imagined democratic space. Taking a cross-disciplinary approach and bringing together both leading and emerging experts on democracy, constitutionalism, and the rule of law, this book powerfully combines the insights of retrospective analysis with future-focused contemplation of where our democracies are heading.

Democracy’s Power to Meet Tomorrow’s Polycrisis

Pandemocracy in the Anglosphere

Should we give up privacy to fight disease, for national security, or to help train AI systems? Recent crises, from the Covid-19 pandemic to the Russian invasion of Ukraine, from Gaza and Afghanistan to the seemingly unstoppable rise of AI, have put privacy under severe pressure. Privacy in Crisis argues the opposite: these crises show that privacy needs to be protected even more. Privacy in Crisis looks at vital current issues: at political manipulation and misinformation, government surveillance, racial tension, hybrid and cyberwarfare (and real wars, such as those in Ukraine and Gaza), the overwhelming power of the internet giants, and surveillance society, and how interference with privacy is key in all of them. It shows how specific crises bring many of these issues together in perfect storms of privacy invasion. The different threats to our privacy revealed by these crises tell parallel stories and are inextricably linked. There are common themes and common technologies - the threats involve the same data, the same profiling systems and the same approaches. In many cases the systems are run or owned by the same small set of companies, controlled by the same few people. Addressing them is difficult but possible - this essential book outlines how.

What if the secret to conquering modern business challenges was already solved... over two thousand years ago? Whether you are scaling a startup, navigating office politics, or leading a company through rapid transformation, modern business can feel like an endless battle. But history's greatest leaders - from Alexander the Great and Scipio Africanus, to Julius Caesar, Cleopatra, Augustus and more - were wrestling with these exact same strategic dilemmas. In Strategize Like Caesar, business executive and compliance expert Nick Henderson-Mayo seamlessly bridges classical antiquity with modern industry. Structured across four key groupings of organisation and strategy - The Disruptors, The Rivals, The Rulers, and The Survivors - this book pairs epic classical history with sharp corporate case studies and actionable frameworks. Step out of the boardroom, and onto the battlefield, discovering how to:

Identify your Centers of Gravity: Apply Alexander the Great's tactics to pinpoint critical pressure points in your competition.

Avoid 'Hannibal's Paradox': Stop confusing short-term tactical wins with long-term strategic success.

Master office politics: Leverage transactional alliances and 'Strategic Distance' to build leverage and protect your team.

Pace transformational change: Use Augustus's principle of festina lente (make haste slowly) to execute seamless organizational pivots.

Drawing from a decade spent advising Fortune 500 risk and legal teams, Henderson-Mayo delivers an indispensable, battle-tested playbook for modern decision-makers. Because the leaders who thrive in the future are those who learn from the past.

This book is the first comprehensive account of the rules and practices─the microstructure─of the Dojima Security Exchange (DSE), the world’s first futures market. Despite worldwide interest in the DSE and its relevance to modern financial markets, it is only briefly touched upon as the earliest example of a futures market in most of the existing literature in English. Until the publication of this book, there has been no comprehensive account in English of the rules and practices of the DSE.The DSE emerged in Osaka, Japan, around the turn of the eighteenth century. In Tokugawa Japan (1603–1867), the shogunate and local lords levied taxes in rice and exchanged rice for currency in rice markets to finance their expenditures. Osaka had the biggest rice market in Japan throughout the Tokugawa period, and most local lords stored rice in their own warehouses in Osaka, selling rice at auctions. Successful bidders received “rice certificates” instead of rice itself, and each rice certificate could be exchanged for a pre-specified quantity of rice any time before its expiration at the issuer’s warehouse. These certificates were actively traded in the DSE.The spot market in the DSE was the market for exchanging rice certificates. In turn, the futures market was the market for the trading of nominal rice derived from one of the representative rice certificates among about 30 brands. There is no physical delivery of rice in the spot market and there is no physical delivery of rice or rice certificate in the futures market—even on the maturity date. All the futures trades at the DSE should be settled by simply paying or receiving the payoff defined as the difference in price between the time of selling (buying) and buying back (selling back). The futures trade was called ‘Cho-Ai-Mai’, which literally means ‘the rice trades on the book’, and implies that there is no physical delivery of rice or rice certificate.
