Also a Contribution to the Delineation of Sexual Self-Determination': The thesis examines the criminal offence of sexual harassment under Section 184i(1) of the German Criminal Code (StGB). It explores the concept of sexual harassment from both legal and societal perspectives and offers a critical analysis of the legislative process that led to the provision's adoption. The work further questions prevailing approaches to the protected legal interest of sexual self-determination. Particular attention is paid to the constituent elements of the offence, as well as to existing gaps in protection and inconsistencies in legal evaluation. The study concludes by proposing a reform and argues that the current provision fails to achieve its intended objectives.

This volume brings together the revised and peer reviewed scientific contributions presented at the 5th Conference on Comparative and International Law (27 June 2025), jointly organized by the Law Center of the Catholic University of Petrópolis (Brazil) and the Society of Juridical and Administrative Sciences.
The book explores the intersections between law, ethics, and human vulnerability through a transnational and comparative lens, addressing some of the most pressing challenges of our time: technological risks, equality and responsibility in evolving legal frameworks, and the pursuit of justice in the fields of human rights and international criminal law.
The volume is structured into three thematic parts: (1) Technology, Risks and Global Governance – examining how global administrative law, artificial intelligence, and medical innovations such as xenotransplantation generate both opportunities and existential risks, thereby calling for renewed forms of international regulation and ethical responsibility. (2) Responsibility, Equality and Comparative Legal Perspectives – engaging with philosophical and legal perspectives on responsibility, analysing authority and social hierarchies within civil law traditions, and evaluating the principle of equal opportunities between women and men in electoral law from comparative angles. (3) Justice, Human Rights and International Criminal Law – addressing forgotten or ongoing struggles for justice, the contested authority of the International Criminal Court, and the strengths and limitations of climate change litigation as a mechanism for advancing environmental justice.
The central theme of the book is how legal and governance frameworks can address human vulnerability in a rapidly changing global context, where ethical dilemmas, technological disruptions, and structural inequalities converge. Prison building has moved from the margins to the mainstream of our penal politics. In recent years the UK Government has invested billions in new prison building and the main political parties are currently locked into a penal arms race over who can, and who will, build the most additional prison places in England and Wales. Prison building is now widely lauded as the definitive policy solution to the current prisons crisis and yet, this remains an elusive sphere of penal policymaking. Academic research remains in its infancy, and we still know very little about how these large investment decisions are made, by whom and for what reasons.
In seeking to shine a light on this subterranean and largely closed sphere of contemporary penal policymaking, this book presents the first systematic study of prison building programmes in England and Wales since the mid-1990’s punitive turn. Drawing upon extensive archival research, 28 exploratory qualitative interviews, publicly recorded data, historic satellite imagery and other mapping techniques this book has three main aims: (1) to provide an authoritative historical account of prison building activity in England and Wales since the mid-1990s punitive turn, (2) to explain why successive governments have chosen to invest in new prison building programmes and (3) to reflect upon how the prisons we build - functionally, architecturally, geographically – continue to shape our politics long after they have been constructed.

The edited volume explores the unique positionality of girls as they experience gender-based violence. While girl children are often placed under the umbrella of womanhood, their location at the intersection of femalehood and childhood places them in a unique position with regards to various forms of exploitation and violence. Feminist theories, including feminist legal theory, provide pertinent avenues to explore girls’ positionalities, yet girl children should also be contextualized in relation to their current lived experiences. This book firstly explores the cultural and visual portrayal of girlhood and its relationship with gender-based violence, and secondly provides case studies of specific violations of human rights encompassing sexual violence and exploitation. In the wake of World War I, the League of Nations and numerous investigative journalists went undercover to infiltrate sex-trafficking rings, conduct clandestine interviews with men and women participating in the vice trade, and identify the weak links in their operations in order to destroy this "global menace." These covert researchers discovered that the sex-trafficking industry was dominated not by vast underworld syndicates but by petty hustlers operating tiny fly-by-night operations. In Dealing in Human Flesh, Jeffrey S. Adler uses these unpublished field reports to map how small-time criminals conducted their sex-trafficking ventures. Adler shows that, despite policymakers' (and filmmakers') obsessions with the cartels and international crime rings of myth, it was in fact the business model of sex traffickers that narcotics and arms smugglers borrowed from to forge the surprisingly un-organized structure of early twenty-first-century human, cocaine, and weapons trafficking.
