Global Perspectives in Comics Studies

Exploring Ecological Issues in Graphic Narratives positions graphic storytelling at the intersection of ecocriticism, environmental justice, and Comics Studies. This book argues that ecological catastrophe is not only a scientific or policy crisis but also a crisis of representation, set against the backdrop of climate change, biodiversity loss, and systemic environmental inequity.While ecocriticism has expanded significantly, this book largely focuses on canonical prose, overlooking the multimodal and spatial possibilities of graphic narratives. It critically engages with the Anthropocene, highlighting the deep connections between environmental degradation and colonialism, capitalism, caste oppression, and gendered exploitation. Through global case studies-including Indigenous resistance in Canada's oil sands, Dalit environmental aesthetics in India, Japanese eco-dystopian manga, and urban human-animal reconfigurations-it explores how graphic narratives depict "slow violence," express nonhuman agency, and challenge anthropocentric binaries.Part of the Global Perspectives in Comics Studies series, this book addresses the multilingual dimensions of the comics medium, often overlooked in ecocriticism, making it a valuable resource for scholars and enthusiasts alike. Exploring Ecological Issues in Graphic Narratives

Freemasonry, the world's oldest and largest fraternity, has been famously described as "a system of morality, in allegory and illustrated by symbols." One of the fraternity's hallmarks, however, is a relaxed attitude in regard to the interpretation of symbolism, since very few of its symbols are clearly explained in the rituals. Rather, the Fraternity encourages its members to investigate the symbols themselves. In this never-before-published work, Albert Pike turns his profound erudition and penetrating intellect to an investigation of the sources and meanings of the oldest and most frequently encountered Masonic symbols. Pike was arguably the most notable character in the history of Scottish Rite Freemasonry, as he revised its constitutions and rituals, and wrote scores of works that influenced the practices of virtually every Supreme Council worldwide. Pike, who believed that symbolism was the "soul of Masonry," was dissatisfied with the "diet of straw" fed to students of Masonic symbolism. is led him to investigate the esoteric sources he believed contributed their wisdom to the Fraternity in an attempt to rationally account for their introduction and significance. He prepared and printed, in limited editions, two studies on Masonic symbolism, but many questions were left unanswered. In addition, he prepared the present text under the title, Esoterika, but he considered it too esoteric to be printed. It thus remained in manuscript in the private archives of the Supreme Council where only a handful Masons have been allowed to see it. 

Now in its second edition, this book includes the summation of Pike's many private discourses and lectures which kept audiences spellbound for hours on end. It treats such topic as the "Square and Compasses," "Weapons and Blows of the Assassins," "The 47th Problem," and much more. The editor has added an introduction, additional illustrations, copious critical notes, and several appendices, which double the length of the original manuscript. Among the appendices are the complete texts of four early catechisms and exposés Pike mentioned throughout his study. Although these exposures differ greatly from Freemasonry as practiced today, they may help us understand how Pike arrived at his ideas.

Kamal Shair's book is a classic rags to riches story: the village boy, who with determination and education, achieves business success, wealth, more wealth, and then influence and power. What makes it unusual is that it emanates from the Arab world. Rarely among Arabs have individuals from thoroughly modest backgrounds, with no access to links, networks or connections become truly global commercial players. Shair was born in a small town in what was then Transjordan and dragged himself through school (his mother was illiterate), moved to college in Beirut, then sailed off to America (Michigan and Yale) and returned to the Middle East to create a multinational corporate empire engaged in trade, construction and manufacturing. Dar al Handasah - Arabic for House of Engineers - was founded in a small flat in Beirut and today, spans the globe with offices in 37 countries. In its early years, Dar al Handasah fought off competition from established western consultancies to win contracts for prestige engineering throughout the Middle East. Eventually, its activities extended further to Europe, the United States, Africa and Asia. By not following the usual pattern of patronage and favours, Kamal Shair applied a fresh kind of ethic in an environment with a loosely-structured business ethic. In the process, he lived through and witnessed at first hand and at close quarters some of the most dramatic events of the modern Arab world. This is quite an extraordinary tale and a very original prism through which to read the turbulent post-World War II history of the Middle East. At the same time we see the growth, despite all the odds, of one of the world's great engineering and business enterprises in a narrative of epic and inspirational proportions.

The Crowd: A Study of the Popular Mind (French: Psychologie des Foules; literally: Psychology of Crowds) is a book authored by Gustave Le Bon that was first published in 1895.

In the book, Le Bon claims that there are several characteristics of crowd psychology: "impulsiveness, irritability, incapacity to reason, the absence of judgement of the critical spirit, the exaggeration of sentiments, and others. Le Bon claimed that "an individual immersed for some length of time in a crowd soon finds himself - either in consequence of magnetic influence given out by the crowd or from some other cause of which we are ignorant - in a special state, which much resembles the state of fascination in which the hypnotized individual finds himself in the hands of the hypnotizer.

Charlotte Perkins Gilman (née Perkins; July 3, 1860 - August 17, 1935), also known by her first married name Charlotte Perkins Stetson, was an American humanist, novelist, writer, lecturer, advocate for social reform, and eugenicist. She was a utopian feminist and served as a role model for future generations of feminists because of her unorthodox concepts and lifestyle. She has been inducted into the National Women's Hall of Fame. Her best remembered work today is her semi-autobiographical short story "The Yellow Wallpaper", which she wrote after a severe bout of postpartum psychosis.
