Der nicht ganz vollständig überlieferte Heliand aus dem 9. Jahrhundert erzählt in annähernd 6.000 Versen das Leben Jesu. Er ist der umfangreichste erhaltene Text in Stabreimen und bildet zusammen mit Fragmenten einer Genesis-Dichtung den zentralen Teil der altniederdeutschen Literaturüberlieferung. Die zweisprachige Studienausgabe bietet beide Texte zusammen mit einer textnahen Übertragung ins Neuhochdeutsche.

While his work speaks very powerfully to the contemporary age, the language of Emmanuel Levinas can seem difficult to approach. This dictionary gives you access to terms he used to build his overall argument, including those he employed idiosyncratically and invented. The dictionary also includes terms from phenomenology to which he gave new meanings, and which focused his critique of Western philosophy. The Levinas Dictionary also makes the work of this central figure in 20th-century philosophy more easily readable in translation by including the original French words he used. Each term explored belongs to one or more of three periods of the work he regarded as properly philosophical: 1) pre-1940; 2) 1940-1960, including the writing of his magnum opus Totality and Infinity and 3) 1960-1995, including his second great work, Otherwise than Being. Entries show how the terms appear, develop, or mutate over the course of his work in the phenomenology of radical ethics. Including an intellectual biography and a chronology of Levinas' life and work, a list of primary sources in French and English, as well as secondary sources and a glossary, The Levinas Dictionary will provide a broad and far-reaching introduction to a thinker whose work has only become more relevant to contemporary theory and practice.

This book provides the first ever English translation of the Yiddish play, Mississippi. Penned in 1935 by Leyb Malakh, it was commissioned for production by a Warsaw-based experimental Yiddish theatre company and was focused on the racial injustice of the Scottsboro Boys case which began with the wrongful arrest of nine African-American youths in Alabama, 1931. The book includes a detailed, multifaceted scholarly introduction which ranges widely and effectively across the various historical and literary contexts in which the play can be appreciated.

As our volume shows, both the writer and the director, Michal Weichert, were keen to depict a dramatic episode from contemporary life that reflected the leftist goals and ideas to which they were devoted. Alyssa Quint examines the fact that while the plight of the Scottsboro Boys lasted throughout the 1930s and inspired works of Communist or leftist struggle by a substantial number of artists and writers in the United States, few beyond America took on the subject. She looks at how Malakh's drama reflects the influence of the African American writer Langston Hughes, who wrote Scottsboro Limited in 1931 after the Boys' first trial when they were sentenced to death. Writing in 1935, after a number of successful appeals, Malakh refers to the rallies that took place throughout Europe in protest of the Boys' arrest and sentencing. The introduction also shows how the play reflects the influence of 'synchronous theater' (akin to immersive theater) as well as other avant-garde theatrical strategies of the time. Quint goes on to consider the substantial success of Mississippi, which played on city stages at least one hundred times throughout Poland and attracted significant critical attention, and what this can tell us about the connection between the Jewish people of Europe and African-Americans around this time.

A Yiddish Play about the Scottsboro Boys

This book gathers a group of scholars whose work has been influenced by the distinctive dialogue between ancient philosophy (and rhetoric) and critical theory promoted by the scholarship of James I. Porter. A classicist who has pushed classics beyond itself - beyond its traditional boundaries - Porter has demonstrated that antiquity cannot be studied without participating in what is sometimes dismissively labeled "reception." The collection here does not simply celebrate the work of a major figure in the field of classics through a series of Porterian writing experiments, but locates the futures of classics in its predisposition to endless transformation, alteration, reconfiguration, and fugitive or exilic deterritorialization. Philology is a practice of philosophy in that contact with the ghosts of antiquity and its diachronic manifestations in modernity confronts the interpreter with opportunities for unlearning as well as learning, unthinking as well as thinking, and for engaging with impossibilities as well as possibilities. The essays gathered here, unified by these themes, include contributions on ancient philosophy (Democritus, the sophists, Aristotle, and Lucretius); reflections on the sublime, which Porter has pivotally elucidated; interventions on the theme of philology and exile (in Nietzsche, Marx, Freud, and Derrida); and theoretical musings on the "agony of immanence," the "biomatic," the "atmospheric," and the relationship between immigration and classical reception.

Treating extant works and lost works side-by-side, Matthew Wright presents a selective survey of ways in which Euripidean tragedy was quoted within antiquity, both in social contexts (on the comic stage, at symposia, in law courts, in education) and in different literary genres (drama, biography, oratory, philosophy, literary scholarship, history and anthologies). There is also a discussion of the connection between quotability and classic status, where Wright asks what quotations can tell us about ancient reading habits. The implication is that Euripides actively participated in quotation culture by deliberately making certain portions of his plays stand out as especially quotable"--

How are comics and Latin elegy related? Comics tell their stories by placing individual images in a sequence, and Latin elegy builds narrative through sequence, encouraging readers to connect poems in order to reveal narrativity. Despite this, there has yet to be a definitive methodology that inspires readers to examine the function of this narrative tool. Examining Ovid's Amores, Swain argues a comics-based methodology can offer us important new insights into the ancient genre of Latin elegy. This book applies theories such as the gutter (the space that exists between two comics panels), Groensteen's braiding (the interaction of panels outside of a linear sequence), and the comics page-turn, all to release new readings that reveal the narrative found across the three books of this text. By analysing the way that Ovid creates a complex narrative mosaic in which key characters and motifs repeat across poems, this book explores how story segments are connected into a larger unified narrative.
