Are riots more than just breakdowns of order? Are rioters just violently and chaotically disrupting the status quo or are they individuals acting together in a surprisingly orderly manner? In Disrupting Order,&nbsp;Nona Martin Storr and Virgil Henry Storr argue that riots are rule-governed, self-generating, emergent phenomena. Nona Martin Storr&nbsp;is Senior Affiliated Scholar at the Mercatus Center at George Mason University. Her writings on riots have appeared in the Journal of Caribbean History,&nbsp;Island Studies Journal, and&nbsp;Space and Culture.
Virgil Henry Storr is Don C. Lavoie Senior Fellow in the Mercatus Center's F.A. Hayek Program for Advanced Study in Philosophy, Politics and Economics, and Professor of Economics at George Mason University. Storr’s previous books with Palgrave Macmillan include&nbsp;Do Markets Corrupt Our Morals?&nbsp;and&nbsp;Community Revival in the Wake of Disaster.

This volume explores the various intellectual property dynamics that emerged during the Cold War, circa 1946-1980. This period brought about some of the most poignant moments in the development of twentieth-century international intellectual property rights, when competing economic systems recognised the value in innovation, human creativity, cinema, and international intellectual property norms and institutions. Examining these developments from a Cold War approach can say much more as it allows for the examination of processes and norms that cater to strong domestic intellectual property rules in Western capitalism while yielding to 'universal' or 'common' property norms in copyright in socialist states. This volume connects some of the different advances made in the international emergence of these competing developments regarding intellectual property rights and emphasises the role of intellectual property institutions, processes, and universalism that helped keep Cold War rivals on the same normative, foundational street for intellectual property rights. This book considers Section 21 of the Divorce and Matrimonial Causes Act 1857 and its significant impact on previously invisible married women in the 19th century.

Tens of thousands of women used this little-known section of the Act to apply for orders from local magistrates' courts to reclaim their rights of testation, inheritance, property ownership, and (dependent on local franchise qualifications) ability to vote. By examining the orders that were made and considering the women who applied for them, the book challenges the mistaken belief that Victorian England and Wales were nations of married, cohabiting couples. 

The detailed statistical analysis and rich case studies presented here provide a totally new perspective on the legal status and experiences of married women in England and Wales. Although many thousands of orders were granted between 1858 and 1900, their details remain unknown and unexamined, primarily because census records did not consistently record dissolved marriages and there is no central index of applications made.

Using sources including court records, parliamentary papers, newspaper reports, census returns, probate records and trade directories, this book reconstructs the successful - and unsuccessful - experiences of women applying to magistrates' courts and the Court for Divorce and Matrimonial Causes to protect their assets across regions and decades.

This book offers the first detailed study of women's legal status in early modern Liège, an otherwise largely overlooked case in European legal history. It follows women across the course of their lives, from birth to widowhood, to show how their legal position and control over property shifted over time, depending on their social status and place within the family. Drawing on a substantial body of wills and marriage contracts from notarial practice, it moves beyond traditional sources to show how the law actually worked in everyday practice, and who took part in its creation. By bringing all these elements together, this book offers a nuanced picture of how law and gender interacted in early modern Europe.

A Natural History of Legal Argument

The U.S. Constitution is silent about a right to privacy, yet the Supreme Court determined in the 1965 reproductive rights case Griswold v. Connecticut, that such a right is inferred from the Bill of Rights. The reasoning in the landmark case hinged on an unexpected word – penumbra. The Court concluded, in other words, that the unmentioned right to privacy resides in the shadows of the amendments.But this was not the first time penumbral imagery was used in legal writings, and its broader cultural usage dates back much further. Jared Schroeder's The Penumbra Problem provides a much-needed – and quite colorful – social and cultural history of the term. The penumbra concept, it turns out, wasn't an accidental choice but instead a well-selected term with centuries of transnational history.Schroeder tells its story through two intertwining narratives: first, how the word penumbra transcended its oblique scientific origins to become a distinct cultural concept; and, second, the parallel story of its evolving use in legal thought. The book tracks back and forth in time, creating an unexpected lineage of people and works who became unwitting champions of the penumbra concept, including mathematician Johannes Kepler, feminist activist Estelle Griswold, British thinker Robert Hooke, and lexicographer Noah Webster. Pairing these stories with the writings of great legal thinkers such as Willam Douglas and Oliver Wendell Holmes, Schroeder is able to construct a kind of etymological love letter to this obscure concept.Not everyone has supported the privacy precedent, though, and it is no exaggeration to say that it is in danger today. Schroeder's clever, utterly unique history is, at its core, a call to redouble efforts to save the right to privacy. He argues that we must understand its ponderous, indeed uncertain, origins to fully appreciate the precarity in which it exists today, and only then can we adequately fight for it.
