The Invisible Hand: Unveiling the Impact of Unmeasurable Perceptions on Regional Economies

Vancouver, Toronto, Montreal, Halifax: How do Canada's gateway city-regions position themselves within global value chains? How do they plan and deliver transportation infrastructures that facilitate trade? And why do their strategies raise democratic concerns? Gateways to Trade compares the approaches to trade-enabling transportation investment in these four urban centres to provide a novel perspective on trade policy. The authors investigate local urban governance relating to global production networks, value chains, and trade. They show that in planning transportation infrastructure for international trade, urban regimes in each city-region operate as executive democracies, consulting private actors, port authorities, and senior governments but bypassing citizen organizations. This book integrates diversified disciplines, research approaches, and methodologies of area studies, regional economic development, and regional science. With its huge population, China has accomplished rapid economic growth since the 1990s, although the significant income gap among regions and individuals has become a serious problem for its society. China's accession to the WTO in 2001 has had various influences on the entire food system, from agriculture to consumers, through the food manufacturing and distribution industries. The changes in the Chinese food system are considered to have also affected the agriculture and food industries in Asian countries where economic interdependence has been promoted in past decades. The author argues these issues based on interdisciplinary and multi-disciplinary methods and approaches and has successfully derived empirical and theoretical results that are rich in policy implications. The topics addressed include food security and sustainability of agriculture especially in the suburbs of big cities; poverty reduction in rural agricultural areas amidst prosperity in urban and coastal areas; regional networks and international trade of the food industry in East Asia; creation of innovative knowledge and human capital for clustering of the agro-food sector; regional development strategy; and international cooperation. The book is interesting for researchers in the field, especially for those who are concerned with the food system that has been changed dynamically in the past two decades, and it is informative, as well, for practitioners who are engaged in related business.

Since the mid-1960s, citizens' rights in the United States have improved across many areas, including race, gender, sexuality, physical disabilities, age, consumption of goods, voting, and more. During this time, there has also been a degradation in economic rights, such as economic inequality. Is there a reason for this contradiction? Is it possible for American citizens to experience rights and equality?


At the center of natural rights theories lies the "inalienable" right to private property, and the concepts and practices of the accumulation of private property always defeat personal liberties. Modern political philosophers who espouse natural rights, including liberal John Rawls and conservative James M. Buchanan, share nearly identical premises and goals. The two sides do not often recognize that the free-standing individual at the center of mainstream theorizing in economics and politics simply does not exist.
