Lorenza Monaco&nbsp;(Phd SOAS, London) is a Research Fellow at the Institute for Innovation and Public Purpose, University College London, a Senior Research Associate at SarchI Industrial Development, University of Johannesburg, and part of GERPISA. She works on the political economy of industrial development in emerging economies, with a special focus on the automotive industry.
Martin Schröder&nbsp;is Associate Professor at the College of Policy Science, Ritsumeikan University, Japan, and Visiting Researcher at the Research Institute of Automobile and Parts Industries, Waseda University, Japan. His research interests are regional economic integration in ASEAN, the political economy of the automotive industry, and digitalisation in the automotive industry.

Forests are central to international security, peace, and justice, as they provide livelihoods for millions of impoverished people in developing countries. Threat's to the world's forests may result in a reduction in basic livelihood resources and will have significant consequences on a global scale. There is no existing international treaty on the protection of forests, with the result that their international protection is governed by disparate areas of international law and smaller-scale local initiatives. In this context, this book reviews the history of international law on forests, evaluating the effectiveness of the existing international legal framework to protect them. The book investigates the impact of the initiatives which have emerged in the absence of a dedicated international agreement, including Reducing Emissions from Deforestation and Forest Degradation (REDD+) and forest certification, which are assessed in the wider context of the development of international environmental law. It also considers the role of regional forest agreements in the international protection of forests. It assesses the challenges to the effectiveness of international law governing forests, in particular the disparate nature of the law as it stands, and posits that the solution can be found in existing regional agreements. It argues that a more specific international treaty, consistent with the recent decisions of international courts on environmental protection and building on the experience of regional legal instruments, may offer an effective path forward.

International Law and the Protection of Forests

Capitalism has resulted in stupendous growth and prosperity in the Western world, underlining its importance as an engine for creation and innovation. Communism arose to counter capitalism's ills as a method of wealth distribution, as manifested through the increasing gap between the rich and poor even in the most prosperous nations. Yet no country is either truly capitalist or communist, and the simplistic polarization of the world into two camps ignores the vital importance of systems that promote both innovation and equitable distribution. This book offers an insightful discussion on the ills that capitalism and communism have meant to address, and the pitfalls of the two approaches, most importantly with regards to the misconceptions of "profit," the misfit child of economics and accounting. Analysis is also extended to consider behavioral theories from a needs perspective, including marginal theory and behavior based on fear. The second section assesses how this is put into practice with innovative examples from global initiatives, foundations, civil society, private sector and country case studies.
