Advances in Geophysical and Environmental Mechanics and Mathematics

A thematic introduction to the modern theory of continuum mechanics and thermodynamics is presented from the viewpoint of granular and porous materials. In the approach taken here, granular and porous media are treated as continuous macroscopic systems of which the overall response is significantly influenced and determined by microstructural effects. In the continuum mechanical modeling, those microscale effects are captured by the introduction of so-called internal variables which account for geometric and material inhomogeneities or the multiphase nature of granular mixtures. Describing the evolution of such internal variables by additional balance laws, the resulting continuum-thermodynamical system requires careful analysis, including, e.g. the application of the entropy principle of Müller with the corresponding approach of exploitation as suggested by Liu. The book is self-contained and addresses an interdisciplinary audience including civil and geotechnical engineers, physicists, applied mathematicians, soil mechanicians and continuum mechanicians.

This book focuses on a very important and still controversial topic in Japan, namely, whether a future exists for Japanese farmers, especially rice-producing farmers. Dealt with here is the prospect along with a personal view of the course that Japanese agriculture should follow, that is, a prescription for enriching the international competitiveness of the agricultural sector, especially rice production, in a more market-oriented economy. Toward restoration of Japanese agriculture, prescriptions are pursued from different aspects. One is the planting schedule of various farm products at the micro level such as the crop rotation system, derived from the mixed-integer dynamic programming model. Another is a macroeconomic policy to enhance the export of the restored 2 million tons of rice by the abolition of the policy of reducing rice acreage-a policy considered unreasonable by some. The path that agriculture in Japan should take has been argued by scholars and experts in related fields. However, no argument has been based on scientific and objective proof. Some applications of mixed-integer dynamic programming model are shown, which are very useful for policy makers as well as graduate students in the field of economic policy (esp. regional &amp; dynamics) and dynamic agricultural planning (esp. planting &amp; comprehensive management).

This book formulates an evolutionary and pluralistic view of social systems in the global age, especially with reference to Niklas Luhmann's theory of social systems. Several paired concepts, such as national society/world society, stratification/functional differentiation, diffuse/specific, universalistic/particularistic, and inclusion/exclusion, illustrate the transformation of social structure and its effects on the constructive principles of social systems and the definition of individual identity. Every functional subsystem has become more autonomous and the socio-cultural sources of individual identity have become more diversified than in the past. The book proposes the concept of the “intermediary unit” and discusses its significance and relevance in the social systems theory. In the background of this discussion, the reality is that there is no system of meaning and values that are valid in all areas of the world society that has emerged in the process of functional differentiation and globalization, nor can we design such a system theoretically. The significance of intermediary units is considered; the competition of intermediary units and meaning-value spaces in the actual social process is defined as the politics of meaning; and a new form of pluralism based on the concept of polycontexturality is proposed. These factors seem to make the whole world more and more complex, risky, uncertain, and nontransparent. The evolutionary and pluralistic design principles of social systems including various intermediary units improve our capacity to cope with future risks.

This is the first book to present a new approach of institutional design as an evolutionary applied policy based on coherent conceptualization and methodology, and to study the actuality and implications of diversifying real/virtual community currencies. In contrast to a de facto standard theory, an institutional ecosystem can be composed of various institutions that continue to coexist with changing relative frequencies. In this view, diversified monetary institutions with local rules are feasible and realistic. Community currencies are worldwide attempts to redress such problems as financial instability, chronic stagnation, and decline of communities caused by globalization of the economy. Considering those alternative movements as a new type of policy, "evolutionist institutional design", this book clarifies the feasibility and significance of community currencies in the current era of globalization. The book also provides a better understanding than mainstream approaches of such platform institutions as money that determine fundamental means of cognition and action of interacting agents. Money is a symbolically generalized communication medium in the mesodomain that mediates between socioeconomic performance and patterns in the macrodomain and motives and cognitive frameworks in the microdomain. Conventional national systems of money and finance are platform institutions that determine basic replicators for a capitalistic market economy to evolve. In contrast, community currencies conveying both economic and social/cultural values are distinct platform institutions that are expected to endogenously change such basic replicators in outer and inner institutions for agents to a noncapitalistic market economy. These currencies are considered target institutions for "media design" in the framework of evolutionist institutional design.

This book reflects new developments in the modeling and control of piezoelectric cantilevers. The main nonlinearities (hysteresis and creep) of these actuators are explained from a physical point of view and introduced into the modeling through operators and systems. The achieved models are adapted and used for the synthesis of classical (PID…) and advanced control schemes and laws. Another important aim of the control part in this book is the feed forward control which is of great interest for linearization and for damping vibration or for performances improvement when no sensor is available for feedback. Finally, the last part addresses the measurement techniques and integration for piezoelectric actuators. The concept of self-sensing and the use of observer techniques are highlighted, emphasizing the close relation between the nonlinearities and the reliability of the provided measurement. This book supplies practical tools for modeling, control and signal measurement of piezoelectric cantilevers. Numercial examples, identification and implementation procedures for experiments are provided. Finally, the appendices provide the tools to get familiar with the employed control techniques.
