There has been an increasing movement to place results at the heart of the agenda for social investments and development. Though development has a compelling value proposition a year of life can often be saved for a few hundred dollars there is skepticism to its ability to measure and manage programs for results. It is this skepticism which is at the heart of debates on the future of development. Managing Development for Results describes the results agenda in development, measurement and management approaches, and challenges on the ground. It is an easily accessible book which provides a comprehensive view on the innovative approach used to demonstrate compelling development results. The first section of the book covers the history and key components of the results agenda. The second section assesses how this is put into practice with innovative examples from global initiatives, foundations, civil society, private sector and country case studies. Finally, the book assesses the future role of the results-based agenda for a wide variety of development actors. It argues that results provide a "common currency" to coordinate and focus increasingly diverse partners on the core value of development, and communicate this to a wider audience. How results are built into development programs and the future development agenda will be illustrated as well. This book aims to target a wide audience in development, practitioners internationally and locally, management, business and philanthropy and those interested in international relations. It would also aim to appeal to a general audience interested in the future of development and whether it can achieve compelling results.

This book presents an integrative and in-depth approach to understanding electricity markets. It combines engineering, economics, and regulatory and public policy, with business analysis. The first part of the book presents the key concepts in these fields relevant to the study of electricity markets. Starting with power engineering basics, the book proceeds to explain how these engineering fundamentals, combined with economic and regulatory theory, are used to design and operate successful electricity markets. With this foundation, business analyses of all sectors of the electric power industry generation, transmission, distribution, retail supply, energy efficiency, and demand response are conducted. Adopting a multidisciplinary approach to climate adjudication, this open access book addresses how adjudicators decide cases by considering the influence of psychology, philosophy, legal education, film, literature, political economy, political ecology, judicial appointments, history, and climate science on their decision-making and ultimately on the (inconsistent) outcomes in climate cases. Drawing upon the humanities, science of climate change and/or social sciences to identify extra-legal factors that may drive the decision-making processes and outcomes of climate cases, this book uses case studies from different jurisdictions across the globe, addressing climate cases decided or pending in Africa, Asia, Europe, Latin and North America, and Oceania. In all, the volume will: - Engage with extra-legal influence to how show judges and arbitrators make their decisions in climate cases, shedding light on the inconsistent responses that climate cases have generated so far - Challenge assumptions of legal universalism, by recognising differences in how the law works in various - Inform actors involved in climate litigation (lawyers, judges, arbitrators, disputants), policymakers, and the public about how cases are decided. The rising volume of critique and commentary about the green economy is preceding a much-needed, global understanding of the concept: the principal aim of this book, accordingly, is to provide a detailed analysis of the emergence, anatomy and workings of the green economy. It traces the evolution of the contemporary green economy idea, interrogates the motivations of green economy strategies and explores how processes of economic-environmental change can be managed. The book draws on examples from across the Global North and Global South to contribute a more diverse understanding of the green economy, and provide useful case study material for students on a wide range of courses.

The ‘green economy’ has emerged in recent years as a ‘new’ concept in economic thinking and has quickly become embedded in mainstream policy and financial discourses. The idea of a green economy has been celebrated by those who see it as a welcome change to the organisation of global and national economies that will result in more ecologically sensitive modes of production and consumption. At the same time, the concept has been subjected to intense critique from several quarters, such as green NGOs and activists as another iteration of ‘business as usual’ or as a mask for capitalism’s continuing and worsening impacts on the environment. But this rush to either praise or condemn the concept, seems to have got ahead of developing a thorough understanding of what the green economy actually is in terms of its rationales, actors, modes, areas and sectors of operation. However, this rising volume of critique and commentary are preceding a much-needed, global understanding of the phenomenon of the green economy. Only then can we really begin to make informed assessments of its strengths, weaknesses and challenges. This book traces the evolution and emergence of the contemporary green economy idea, interrogates the motivations of green economy strategies and explores how processes of economic-environmental change can be managed.
