In a world shaken by crises, calls to stand up for one's own values and convictions are commonplace. Lawyers, too, are more and more openly acknowledging, if not embracing, the fact that their personal convictions shape their work. They openly view the law as an instrument for improving the world, though they understand this to mean very different things. This volume builds on this observation and asks what role such convictions play in the practice and scholarship of law, what role they can or should play, and what attitude is legitimate or even necessary for lawyers.

Volume 12 of the HKW contains 'Allgemeine Staatslehre', the groundbreaking work that was to help set in motion the Weimar Richtungs- und Methodenstreit of the 1920s. Terminologically drawing on the tradition culminating in Georg Jellinek's classic work, Kelsen deprives the General Theory of the State of its methodological basis. In fact, his 'Allgemeine Staatslehre', written at the zenith of his Viennese years, marks the first comprehensive exposition of the Pure Theory of Law. In other words, this was the 'zero edition' of the 'Reine Rechtslehre', which then already bore all the typical characteristics of the first edition published in 1934, such as the juxtaposition of the (nomo)static and (nomo)dynamic view, the unity of state and legal order, the deconstruction of the traditional dichotomy of public and private law as well as the concept of the basic norm (Grundnorm).

How visual fantasies of violence, animality, and political agency offered an alternative image of masculinity during the Enlightenment &nbsp; Centering on animal bodies and assertive masculinity, the visual strategies of hunting art may appear incongruent with our understanding of Rococo aesthetics and the early Enlightenment. But these themes, embraced with enthusiasm by artists and patrons, inspired artworks in every genre and medium in eighteenth-century France. As the country expanded its colonial empire, the absolute monarchy existed in tension with ambitious elites, and the Enlightenment eroded old certainties about selfhood and society, hunting art provided a visual language of personal and national sovereignty written with bodies of men and animals. Amy Freund revises our received notions of eighteenth-century French art and culture, confronting us with a visual culture of animality, violence, and death: a Rococo of dogs and guns. &nbsp; Noble Beasts highlights the work of François Desportes, Jean-Baptiste Oudry, and others who, operating from the heart of institutions such as the Royal Academy and the Gobelins manufactory, produced an astonishing volume of highly accomplished work.
