Fitzpatrick Sheila: The Death of Stalin

The Death of Stalin

Palgrave Studies in the History of Finance

This volume explores the economic and financial contexts behind a period of large-scale bankruptcies in Europe across the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries. With a particular focus on Spanish and Italian case studies, contributions analyse numerous aspects of failure and insolvency during this time.Despite growing contemporary interest in economic crises—particularly in the aftermath of 2008—the history of bankruptcy practices and the responsibilities of financial actors within the context of early globalisation remains largely underexplored. This volume responds to that need, offering a detailed, archivally grounded and theoretically robust investigation into parallels that exist in early modern Europe. Drawing out comparative analyses between modern and early modern financial crises, the book illuminates how early modern states developed systems of guarantees in tandem with the growth of mercantile capitalism, and covers questions including public debt management, financial transparency, the accountability of economic actors, and the relationship between political and economic power. This book will be a fascinating read for scholars of early modern financial and economic history.Giuseppe De Luca

Bankruptcies, Defaults and Insolvency Proceedings in Spain and Italy, 16th – 17th Centuries

The material assembled in this volume offers a deeper insight into Walter Eucken's attitudes, thought, and actions during the darkest years of Germany's history: the period of National Socialism. Although Eucken, like his associates, destroyed potentially incriminating documents after the failed assassination attempt by Count Stauffenberg on Adolf Hitler on July 20, 1944, the surviving texts mark key stages in a process that ultimately led this determined opponent of the Nazi regime - an opponent from the very beginning - into active resistance against Hitler.

What rendered Eucken immune to National Socialism from the outset was his philosophically grounded abhorrence of the dissolution of the free individual into the collective, as is inherent in all totalitarian, especially
völkisch
(ethno-nationalist) ideologies. His systematic opposition to the Nazi regime began with refusal, open protest, and confrontation, particularly in response to the rapid
Gleichschaltung
(forced coordination) of the universities, Martin Heidegger's rectorship, and the dismantling of academic freedom by the Nazis. Following Germany's invasion of Poland and several ultimately unsuccessful attempts to exert positive influence on the centers of power in Berlin, his resistance culminated in a - necessarily cautious - participation in conspiratorial activities as an advisor and confidant to the plotters.

The texts in this volume include notes and sketches of ideas, completed manuscripts that remained unpublished during his lifetime, published essays, a transcript of the lecture "Kampf der Wissenschaften," the record of a public discussion with a Nazi district leader, an expert report commissioned by the Reich Ministry of Economics on possible "sources of war financing" at the end of 1939, the academically significant essay "Wettbewerb als Grundprinzip der Wirtschaftsverfassung" prepared within the Academy for German Law, the chapter Eucken authored for the "Primer of Economics" initiated by Carl Goerdeler, as well as the appendix he co-authored to the memorandum "Wirtschafts- und Sozialordnung" of the Bonhoeffer Circle. This memorandum was prepared on behalf of the Confessing Church with a view to a future world church conference planned for the time after the war and the hoped-for overthrow of Hitler. Retrospective additions include, among other things, Eucken's "Notizen über die Haltung der rechts- und staatswissenschaftlichen Fakultät in Freiburg während der Herrschaft des Nationalsozialismus," his funeral oration for his prematurely deceased colleague Adolf Lampe, and drafts for an obituary of Hans Großmann-Doerth, with whom, together with Franz Böhm, Eucken had launched the research program of the Freiburg School: the development of a legal order conceived as an economic constitution, whose fundamental principle would be competition.

These materials make it possible to trace how Eucken, precisely through his confrontation with the rapidly escalating regime of injustice - with the enforced
Gleichschaltung
, the increasing move toward a planned economy, the persecution of the Jews culminating in genocide, the other atrocities of the dictatorship, and the devastating Second World War - was able to sharpen his conception of a "humane and functional order," diametrically opposed to such a cataclysm. Eucken's theoretical design of a competitive order would later provide direction in the postwar years for the establishment of a social market economy in the young Federal Republic of Germany.

In this book, contributors go in-depth to analyze the 'crime of aggression', 'crimes against humanity' and their applicability in the context of the invasion of Ukraine. The ongoing Russian invasion of Ukraine brings the principles of Nuremberg to the forefront of discussions on justice, raising questions about the feasibility of Nuremberg-style accountability. The book touches upon the abduction of Ukrainian children and the destruction of Ukrainian cultural heritage. Contributors also discuss the topic of war crime tribunals after Nuremberg, including Timor and former Yugoslavia, as well as tribunals in Rwanda, Sierra Leone, and others leading up to the International Criminal Court (ICC). Including essays by Oleksandra Matviichuk, the Ukrainian Nobel Laureate, and Ambassador Dr. Anton Korynevych, Ukrainian minister and specialist in international law, this book considers the contemporary relevance of the Nuremberg principles in the context of the Russian invasion of Ukraine.

Celebrated for its natural beauty and its abundance of wildlife, the Mekong river runs thousands of miles through China, Myanmar, Laos, Thailand, Cambodia, and Vietnam. Its basin is home to more than 70 million people and has for centuries been one of the world's richest agricultural areas and a biodynamic wonder. Today, however, it is undergoing profound changes. Development policies, led by a rising China in particular, aim to interconnect the region and urbanize the inhabitants. In this new and comprehensively updated edition of Last Days of the Mighty Mekong, Brian Eyler gives his first-hand account of the impact on the river of the tumultuous political period since the book's original publication. From the lockdowns of the COVID-19 pandemic and a devastating drought to the increasing political tensions and resource competition between China and Trump-era America, Eyler recounts his own increasing involvements in international efforts to protect this precious and delicate environment. Along the way he meets the region's diverse peoples, from villagers to community leaders, politicians to policy makers. Through conversations with them he reveals the urgent struggle to save the Mekong and its unique ecosystem.

Revealing the people behind the Rothschild name, The Rothschilds explores the lives and legacy of one of the best-known and most impactful families in modern history. The Rothschild name has long been synonymous with wealth and privilege, but as Jews the family has also been dogged by prejudice and hatred. Antisemitism followed them from their earliest beginnings in the oppressive Jewish ghetto of Frankfurt, where Jews were not allowed out after nightfall, to the lofty summits of high finance, art, and culture. However, behind the myths, the glamor, and the conspiracy theories are a group of relatives whose individualism, personalities and occasional eccentricities have been obscured by their shared surname.

In The Rothschilds, Harry Freedman delves into their lives on a historical tour, marked by an unfailing attention to the influence of individual family members on world events.

We travel from the genesis of the Rothschild international banking empire to the impact of individual Rothschilds in multiple fields over the past 250 years.

Spanning war, politics and the industrial revolution, art, architecture and interior design, zoology, smuggling, and counter-terrorism and the ongoing struggle against entrenched anti-Jewish bigotry in different historical eras and places.

The Rothschilds reveals a truly new story of a very old family, making a great contribution both to history and our understanding of a dynasty that has shaped our world.

What does it mean to be governed and what does it mean to resist? Examining how communities form amidst social and political turbulence, this open access book presents four case studies that demonstrate the power of organic social formations over imposed order. Understanding this formation of community in terms of 'ungovernability' and a 'poetics of resistance',Ungovernable Spaces charts a movement from oppression, through transformation, into imagining, and finally emergence. Throughout the book, the authors engage methods of situated practice and related modes of writing and image-making to consider a range of global case studies: the destruction of the Mecca apartment building in Chicago's South Side in 1952, following a decade of resistance from the building's predominantly African American occupants; M.K. Gandhi's practices of social activism including the Salt March protest of 1930, and the daily practice of spinning and intermittent fasts; the Ciudad Abierta (Open City), a radical pedagogical experiment started by a poet and an architect in Valparaíso, Chile in 1970; and, finally, the urban ecologies developing on either side of Belfast's 'peace walls' in the wake of the Troubles and 1998's Good Friday Agreement. Structured via four spatial configurations - the grid, the charkha, the constellation, and the cluster -each case study explores community formation through artistic and aesthetic practices that resist and unsettle forms of hegemonic order. A truly interdisciplinary work at the intersection of poetry, art and spatial practice, Ungovernable Spaces argues for the importance of ethics, aesthetics, imagination and ecology in developing, of necessity, a new poetics of 'us.' *A New York Times Notable Book * A Financial Times Best Book of the Year 'A learned, formidable and vivid story... Readers around the world will study and ponder this monumental work of history, agreeing and arguing with it, all the while affirming its generational importance, for decades to come' The New York Times 'Epic... Read this book and you will learn innumerable things you did not previously know culled from places you have never been' Financial Times A brilliant global narrative that unravels the defining story of the past thousand years No other phenomenon has shaped human history as decisively as capitalism. It structures how we live and work, how we think about ourselves and others, how we organise our politics. Sven Beckert situates the story of capitalism within the largest conceivable geographical and historical framework in this fascinating new book.Capitalism, argues Beckert, was born global. Emerging from merchant communities across Asia, Africa and Europe, capitalism's radical recasting of economic life rooted itself only gradually. Then it burst onto the world scene, as European states and merchants built a powerful alliance that would propel them across the oceans. This epic drama corresponded at no point to an idealised dream of free markets. All along, state-backed institutions and imperial expansions shaped its dynamics.Capitalism decentres the European perspective, highlighting agency, resistance, innovation and ruthless coercion around the world through to the present with the rise of Asian economies, particularly China. Sven Beckert doesn't merely add up capitalism's debits and credits in this monumental book, but allows us to think afresh about the past to help us re-imagine the future.

This wide-ranging intellectual and media history traces China's emergence as a modern state in which boundaries blur between art and design, education and psychological conditioning. Tracking the parallel development of set design and social engineering from the 1920s to the 1960s, Background Matters examines the concept of huanjing (environment), a neologism introduced at the turn of the twentieth century that evoked heated intellectual debates and inspired frenzied aesthetic experimentation. Weihong Bao shows how efforts to reshape the mind consolidated the idea and art of environment by advancing a new theoretical notion of set design: both as aesthetic organization across film, theater, radio, and television and as social experimentation in worldmaking across geopolitical and transnational contexts. Inventive and breathtaking in scope, this book radically rethinks environment not as an external object but as the nexus of mind, medium, and society.

THE INSTANT SUNDAY TIMES BESTSELLERThe world's criminals earn trillions every year. They keep almost all of it. Every effort to stop them has failed. Why? Join Oliver Bullough through the looking glass, voyaging through the dark heart of the global economy: where flows of dirty banknotes, designer goods and baby eels prop up illicit networks spanning from Miami to Shanghai - via, strangely, North Oxfordshire. Cryptocurrencies flow through ledgers that would look familiar to a fifteenth-century Florentine banker. Casinos, lottery tickets and government ignorance all power the merry-go-round of dirty money. And it all works brilliantly. Better than ever. There has never been a better time to be a criminal. It's time that changed.

Trade unions played a massive part in shaping Britain's democracy. But today it's easy to forget that one of their signal achievements was transforming access to education for working people. In Libraries gave us power, Gavin McCann tells the story of how the trade union movement fought for education, untapping the potential of millions. Following the self-taught activists who refused to accept exclusion, he traces their struggles across two-hundred years of history, highlighting successes such as the creation of Oxford's Ruskin College and the earliest elections of working-class MPs. This is a story that carries on into the present, as unions continue to offer essential support through training, learning programmes and campaigns to help workers in a changing economy - all rooted in values that would be instantly recognisable to the movement's pioneers. Rescuing a history that is fast disappearing from view, Libraries gave us power is essential reading for anyone who wants to know the truth about education, democracy and working-class power in modern Britain.
