Strahan J: The Book of the Dead / LF

The Book of the Dead

A rollicking, eye-opening history of the Star Wars franchise: an unrivaled force in popular culture that changed the way Hollywood makes movies—and that is now imperiled by many of the industry forces it set in motion From the premiere of the first film in 1977, the Star Wars franchise not only captured the imaginations of billions of people—and billions of dollars of revenue—but also rewrote the rules of the entertainment industry. Game-changing special effects, must-have collectibles, and the richness of George Lucas’s ever-expanding narrative gave rise to a new Hollywood model in which the boundary between screen and life collapsed. Star Wars wasn’t just a movie, after all: it was an alternate universe, a moral code, a way of life. Over the last half-century, Wall Street Journal reporter Erich Schwartzel explains, the Star Wars franchise has relied on an anti-establishment ethos, the savvy of executives, and the devotion of moviegoers to become a new American myth. But since its fateful acquisition by Disney in 2012, Star Wars has become a cautionary tale of Hollywood excess, and its present status as a corporate holding bears little resemblance to its origins. Drawing on scores of insider interviews and surveying fifty years of American culture and commerce, Schwartzel delivers fresh perspective on the Star Wars story, bringing to life the scrappy creative spirit of Lucasfilm’s early days; the box-office frenzy that rang in Hollywood’s blockbuster era and gave rise to a new industry playbook; and the scores of fans whose lives have been shaped by this singular force. A panoramic narrative of dreams, obsession, and power, Rebels and Empires is the untold history of Hollywood’s most storied epic.

Why do organizations keep causing harm? And how do we cure toxic cultures? "A timely, rigorous, and deeply unsettling book."—Amy C. Edmondson, Novartis Professor of Leadership and Management, Harvard Business School, and author of The Fearless Organization Not a week goes by with out yet another major organizational scandal: Open AI’s agents going rogue, Volkswagen’s emissions cheating, Boeing’s persistent safety issues, endemic police misconduct at the Oakland PD, and sexual abuse at yet another Roman Catholic Church. So why do do organizations keep causing these harms? Benjamin van Rooij and Nicholas Lord argue that to truly understand and address the impacts of dysfunctional organizations we must look beyond leadership and understand the deeper problems in the organization itself. To do so, Toxic uses dozens of in-depth case studies to connect the dots between various scandals and illustrate the deeper toxic patterns within organizations that lead to them. Each chapter recounts compelling stories of individuals caught within these toxic systems and addresses urgent societal challenges such as environmental degradation, the opioid epidemic, the harms of social media, and police abuse. Stories include:

Facebook sought to grow from 1 billion to 5 billion users, leading it to enter Myanmar’s volatile ethnic context without having the knowledge or capacity to do proper content moderation, and thus contributing to genocide.

Don Parus, a BP engineer made an all-out effort to warn company leaders to invest in safety, just months before a major explosion killed fiteen and injured hundreds at its Texas City Refinery.

Keith Batt, a rookie at the Oakland Police Department, was made to witness, condone and participate in falsifying arrest records, planting evidence, and even in unsanctioned violence, all within two weeks on the job.

Revealing, accessible, engaging, and unsettling, Toxic breaks down the core characteristics of toxic organizations and shows readers how to recognize and address toxicity in their everyday lives.

Penguin Classics Marvel Collection

During the 1960s, under the hands of the inimitable creative team of Jack Kirby and Stan Lee, Marvel's Thor combined the raw material of ancient Norse mythology with the nonstop action of super-heroic adventure comics and the speculative reach of classic science fiction. The result was a heady brew: epic, operatic, melodramatic, even psychedelic. This collection gathers some of the most important story arcs from the foundational years of the series and includes seminal early appearances of characters such as Hercules and Ego, the Living Planet, as well as Thor's first encounter with Galactus! The Penguin Classics Marvel Collection provides a detailed scholarly introduction, contextualizing Kirby's work on Thor within his larger oeuvre, alongside an extended critical apparatus and an appendix of additional material drawn from Kirby and Lee's popular back-up series "Tales of Asgard."

The Penguin Classics Marvel Collection presents the origin stories, seminal tales, and characters of the Marvel Universe to explore Marvel’s transformative and timeless influence on an entire genre of fantasy Collects Journey into Mystery #83, 85, and 114-116, and Thor #128-133, 154-157, and 159-161. It is impossible to imagine American popular culture without Marvel Comics. For decades, Marvel has published groundbreaking visual narratives that sustain attention on multiple levels: as metaphors for the experience of difference and otherness; as meditations on the fluid nature of identity; and as high-water marks in the artistic tradition of American cartooning, to name a few. Little Clothbound Classics

Little Clothbound Classics: irresistible, mini editions of short stories, novellas, and essays from the world’s greatest writers, designed by the award-winning Coralie Bickford-Smith. In these elegant and devastating tales of deception, desire, and social intrigue, Edith Wharton exposes the brittle veneer of civility that masks human ambition and longing. From the sunlit terraces of Rome to the drawing rooms of New York, Wharton’s characters navigate a world bound by class and convention yet charged with emotional undercurrents they barely understand. In “Roman Fever,” two middle-aged women confront the unspoken rivalries that have shadowed their friendship for decades; in “Mrs. Manstey’s View,” a lonely widow’s cherished glimpse of life beyond her window becomes the stage for a quiet tragedy; and in “After Holbein,” the elaborate pretenses of two aging New Yorkers reveal the haunting persistence of vanity and illusion. These Wharton works are the latest to join the Little Clothbound Classic series designed by Coralie Bickford-Smith. What does it mean to be governed and what does it mean to resist? Examining how communities form amidst social and political turbulence, this open access book presents four case studies that demonstrate the power of organic social formations over imposed order. Understanding this formation of community in terms of 'ungovernability' and a 'poetics of resistance',Ungovernable Spaces charts a movement from oppression, through transformation, into imagining, and finally emergence. Throughout the book, the authors engage methods of situated practice and related modes of writing and image-making to consider a range of global case studies: the destruction of the Mecca apartment building in Chicago's South Side in 1952, following a decade of resistance from the building's predominantly African American occupants; M.K. Gandhi's practices of social activism including the Salt March protest of 1930, and the daily practice of spinning and intermittent fasts; the Ciudad Abierta (Open City), a radical pedagogical experiment started by a poet and an architect in Valparaíso, Chile in 1970; and, finally, the urban ecologies developing on either side of Belfast's 'peace walls' in the wake of the Troubles and 1998's Good Friday Agreement. Structured via four spatial configurations - the grid, the charkha, the constellation, and the cluster -each case study explores community formation through artistic and aesthetic practices that resist and unsettle forms of hegemonic order. A truly interdisciplinary work at the intersection of poetry, art and spatial practice, Ungovernable Spaces argues for the importance of ethics, aesthetics, imagination and ecology in developing, of necessity, a new poetics of 'us.' Part life philosophy, part financial clarity, and part real-world wisdom from a hugely popular estate planning attorney who has seen what happens when families plan and when they don't. I'm Sorry I'm Dead helps readers confront the reality of life's end, not in a morbid way, but in a deeply empowering one. Estate planning attorney, entrepreneur, and best-selling author Pamela Maass Garrett aka Law Mother has helped thousands of families navigate what happens when someone dies. She has seen firsthand that the biggest problems families face are rarely legal: they are emotional, relational, and the result of decisions never made . . . siblings that stop speaking over a dispute about their parent's home, a grieving widow locked out of bank accounts because she didn't know how to get access, and families forced to guess about critical medical decisions. All of these problems can be easily avoided. In this book, Garrett introduces a powerful mindset shift: when you face the end of life honestly, you begin living more intentionally today. Through compelling stories from real families, practical financial insights, and simple decision-making frameworks, readers learn how to take control of their lives before circumstances take control of them. The book guides readers through the most important life decisions most people avoid: · how to organize finances and build real wealth · how to protect loved ones legally and emotionally · how to make difficult family decisions before crisis strikes · how to prevent conflict, confusion, and regret after death · how to create a legacy that strengthens future generations rather than unintentionally burdening them with a huge tax bill · what you really can and can't do Rather than overwhelming readers with technical legal details, I'm Sorry I'm Dead offers a clear philosophy and practical tools for making the decisions that matter most. The result is a life lived with greater clarity, stronger relationships, and the peace of knowing the people you love will be protected. This book is for anyone who wants to stop drifting through life and start deciding it.

Estate Planning to Protect the People You Love and Leave Behind More Than Money

I’m Sorry I’m Dead

How water infrastructure finance drives the size of our water bills, who can afford them, and the geography of urban landscapes. “Water crises” have emerged in the US with increasing regularity, from Flint, MI to Jackson, MS. Simultaneously, the rise in water bills for the past decade has far outpaced the rising cost of groceries, gas, or electricity, leading more Americans to add water to the growing list of their unaffordable basic necessities. Water and Wall Street by Martin Doyle, Lauren Patterson, and Erika Smull uncovers how the seemingly arcane world of infrastructure finance underlies these and other water trends in US cities, and how water infrastructure shapes the most basic landscape of cities and suburbs. The authors begin by describing the basics of how water infrastructure works, and more importantly, how it is financed by municipal bonds, the backbone of urban finance. They then trace the history of municipal bonds for water from the founding of Philadelphia in the eighteenth century to the bankruptcy of Detroit in the twenty-first. Along the way, they also explore financial geography: how water bills, water affordability, and the peculiarities of infrastructure finance create distinct geographies of water capital. Finally, they take a speculative look at alternative future states for our cities, our infrastructure, and our water.

A clear, nontechnical guide to why cryptocurrency exists, how it reshapes trust and money, and why it matters beyond speculation. How do we build trust in a digital world where institutions, platforms, and intermediaries increasingly mediate money, identity, and ownership? In Cryptocurrency and Blockchain, Marco Di Maggio offers an essential guide to cryptocurrencies and blockchains—two of the most misunderstood technological and economic transformations of the digital age. Rather than focusing on price charts, hype cycles, or programming details, Di Maggio explains why these technologies exist, what problems they attempt to solve, and why they matter for people who are not crypto insiders. Using plain language, analogies, and real-world examples, the book explains how cryptocurrencies reshape core concepts of money, property, markets, and governance. The author explores topics such as how and why Bitcoin is used as a financial fallback, what stablecoins are and how they have become critical infrastructure for global payments, and how NFTs introduced a new notion of ownership and identity on the internet. Written for curious readers, journalists, students, policymakers, and professionals, Cryptocurrency provides a conceptual framework for understanding crypto as infrastructure, not ideology—helping readers see past the noise to grasp the deeper forces reshaping money, trust, and coordination in the digital economy.
