A look at the imaginative work of artists and photographers who defied the aesthetics of realism in nineteenth-century France &nbsp; Though realism is regarded as the dominant aesthetic of nineteenth-century France, an equally fervent movement of dreamlike, allegorical, and eerie literature and art was produced by figures as renowned as Victor Hugo and Odilon Redon. These “shadow visionaries” traversed the boundaries of reality in their work, recognizing the potential for art to construct a spiritual consciousness. Highlighting haunted representations of the natural world, Shadow Visionaries provides an extraordinary look at a popular yet understudied era of French art. &nbsp; In bringing together a variety of media—from photographs to literature—this catalogue challenges traditional art historical narratives and facilitates ground-breaking dialogues between creative works. A comprehensive yet accessible survey of Korean photography since 1957. Shine Brightly: Korean Photography Since 1957 is the first detailed survey of Korean photography in the English language. Built upon original, on-the-ground research and firsthand interviews, it offers a focused yet accessible exploration of the key artists, movements and exhibitions against their political, social and economic backdrops. Korean photography, whose practitioners have forged a unique visual language across seven decades, has been a vital part of the rise of South Korea's importance and influence at the heart of contemporary culture. Featuring over sixty photographers and 200 photographs, this striking book traces the development of Korean photography from its documentary roots in post-war realism and the avant-garde explorations of the 1970s and 1980s, to the key themes and artists present in the contemporary scene. Roger Dooley wasn't looking for the San Jose. But an accidental discovery in the dusty stacks of a Spanish archive in the 1980s led him to the story of a lifetime-the journey of a ship that had gathered a mountain of riches from the New World for a long-awaited delivery to the King of Spain nearly three centuries earlier.
