What can one city tell us about the global textile waste problem? This Open Access study is the first detailed ethnography of clothing waste infrastructures that starts where the problem starts - the Global North. Based on more than 100 interviews, cultural anthropologist Heike Derwanz follows the journey of fast fashion in Hamburg, Germany: starting with two women from different socio-economic backgrounds sorting through their wardrobes, travelling through local flea markets, eBay, church clothes banks, upcycling brands and recycling sites, only to end up in homes and waste heaps in the Global South. Bringing together human agents such as designers, social workers and vintage sellers with objects from containers, plastic sacks and internet platforms to piles of sorted textiles, this on-the-ground cultural study reveals how the global economic system of fast fashion shapes local infrastructures entangled in everyday lives. Combining material culture, waste studies and economic perspectives to scrutinize the so-called circular economy of today's global textile recycling market, Derwanz investigates what agency modern consumers really have in the lifecycle of their clothes. This book addresses the connections between food provisioning, natural resource extraction and the exploitation of human labor. Through a series of case studies, it tackles agricultural extractivist regimes in the Mediterranean, focusing on the socio-ecological and ideological practices that constrain or contribute to conflicting processes of social reproduction. The book is divided into two parts investigating the two faces of agricultural production and opening the field of their inter-connections: (1) labor, nature and capital in food production, and (2) agricultural projects for a sustainable future. The contributed chapters provide insights into how valuation processes of human and non-human resources are entangled with economic valorization and capital accumulation. Bringing together studies based on long-term ethnographic fieldwork, Agricultural Extractivism in the Mediterranean Region bridges macro-level analyses and micro-level perspectives by tracing how structural constraints express themselves in concrete social relations. The reliance on detailed case studies facilitates the introduction of advanced topics in an accessible and engaging format. This book will be of interest to scholars in economic and environmental anthropology, agrarian studies and the anthropology of work, as well as sociologists and human geographers working in related areas.Susana Narotzky is Professor of Social Anthropology at the University of Barcelona, Spain. She received the National Prize for Research in the Humanities awarded by the Spanish Research Ministry in 2020. Her work addresses social reproduction from a multi-scale perspective and is inspired by theories of critical political economy, political ecology, moral economy and feminist economics.Natalia Buier is a Ramón y Cajal Researcher at the Complutense University of Madrid, Spain, and a member of the Grup d'Estudis sobre Reciprocitat (University of Barcelona) and the Charles Babbage Social Sciences of Work Research Group (UCM). Her current research focuses on agriculture-conservation conflicts and the integration of social and environmental justice in a context of groundwater depletion.Theodora Vetta is a Distinguished Researcher at the University of Barcelona, Spain. Her work focuses on green energy transition, financialization, labor and indebtedness in South Europe. Cells, the basic units of biological structure and function, vary broadly in type and state. Individual cells are the building blocks of tissues, organs, and organisms. Each tissue contains cells of many types, and cells of each type can switch among biological states. Single-cell genomics, transcriptomics and epigenomics open a whole new era with the possibility to interrogate every cell of an organism in order to decipher the important biological processes that occur within. This has emerged as a ground-breaking technology that has greatly enhanced our understanding of the complexity of gene expression dynamics at a microscopic resolution. It is anticipated that in the next 5-10 years, the wider research community will be routinely employing this powerful technology as a laboratory staple. Single-cell genomics, transcriptomics and epigenomics hold the potential to revolutionize the way we characterize complex cell assemblies and study their spatial organization, dynamics, clonal distribution, pathways, function, and crosstalks. These fascinating advances have opened up a new field of cell population genomics.&nbsp; Single-cell genomics, transcriptomics and epigenomics research is providing new insights into inter-cellular population genomic diversity, heterogeneity, specialization, taxonomy, spatial and temporal gene regulation, and cellular and organismal development and evolution. It is facilitating plant breeding, understanding of human disease conditions and personalized medicine.
