This book provides an overview and assessment of infrastructure’s legal and governance underpinnings. Infrastructure is often thought of as a term referring only to the physical entities – pipes, cables, utility poles, highways, airports – that facilitate the transmission of water, gas, telecommunications and electricity, as well as enabling both private and public transportation, and serving to house more or less public services such as health care and schools. However, infrastructure planning and implementation are not reducible to bricks and mortar. The complex process requires drawing from and sometimes re-inventing or recycling legal tools, from construction contracts to financing ‘deals’, which are often taken for granted by both practitioners and urban studies scholars. These are as important today as they were when the first railway lines were built, and to a large extent they remain just as invisible: the avalanche of drawings and photographs of planned or in-process fancy buildings tends to hide from view the behind- the-scenes negotiations and decision-making that had to happen before construction could start, and which in some cases continue afterwards. This book does not ignore the material and nonhuman aspects of infrastructure. But, focusing on the legal and governance underpinnings of infrastructure projects, via a series of key terms that refer to hybrid legal processes, the book offers an important socio-legal supplement to the current ‘infrastructure turn’. This book will be of interest to students in the areas of socio-legal studies, urban sociology, urban studies, urban geography, planning, public law, and contract law, as well as practitioners involved in infrastructure projects.

Drawing on anthropology, sociology, political economy, and ethics, the book traces the influence of lawyer-economists in developing and operationalizing key ideas-for instance human capital and structural adjustment-that have come to be grouped under the heading of "neoliberalism". It then examines how these ideas are tied to global environmental harm and to wealth inequality. Largely because of such ties, sociolegal studies tend to dismiss economic thought. This book, however, forges a path between economic and sociolegal approaches. Discussing thinkers such as Foucault and Polanyi, Calabresi and Sunstein, it demonstrates both the possibilities and limitations inherent in economistic approaches to law. Bringing together disparate and sometimes conflicting literatures, the book thereby eschews disciplinary taboos in the name of a creative, sympathetic, and critical rereading of the key ideas of Law and Economics.

European Ethnobotany

<div>Ethnobiology is the study of the dynamic relationship between plants, animals, people, and the environment. Academic and applied interests include ethnobotany, ethnozoology, linguistics, paleoethnobotany, zooarchaeology, ethnoecology, and many others. The field lies at a dynamic intersection between the social and biological sciences. The major contribution from the biological sciences has come from economic botany, which has a rich historical and scientific tradition. </div><div>
</div><div>The Balkans MRW (online and print) Volume will cover this European Macroregion. The content will focus on the ethnobotany of wild plants in this Macroregion and it will be first developed as an online site and, later, when all of the planned topics have been covered for this specific volume, printed in a hard copy version. The online site will remain live and be available for updates (with new monographs [if not covered initially due to lack of research]). </div><div>
</div><div>The content will be divided into sections covering countries (or groups of countries), based on plant diversity and not necessarily political or national boundaries. The Balkans volume will have an Introduction (4,000-6,000 words); 50 200 plant monographs (10 to maximum 50 monographs per country) with each monograph having a length of ~1,500 words (with references), plus 2-4 photographs. To further define the content, the plant monographs will be divided into five major categories (food; medicine/cosmetic; veterinary; handicraft plants; and ritual/folkloric uses) and include notes. The number of the monographs in every category will be negotiated depending on the advances of the ethnobotanical research in each specific country, or group of countries. The main criteria for the inclusion of a given plant will be its cultural salience within a given country (assessed by the Volume Editor). References will be given at the end of the Introduction and each monograph.

A Modern Commentary and Analysis

The History of the United States Supreme Court

The 2nd edition of Murder, Medicine and Motherhood presents a fresh examination of the case of Kathleen Folbigg and a critical evaluation of the process that led to her exoneration in 2023. 

In 2011, the 2nd edition of this influential work argued that Kathleen Folbigg was wrongly convicted of killing her 4 children. The book attracted scholarly and public attention and led to medical and legal reviews of the Folbigg children's deaths. 

Two subsequent inquiries examined Folbigg's convictions. In 2019, Commissioner Blanch concluded that Folbigg's guilt was "even more certain" than it had been at trial. His report provoked an unprecedented response from the Australian Academy of Science, highlighting a rift between the legal and scientific establishments over how medical evidence should be managed. A petition signed by Nobel prize winners and others demanded a further review. The 2nd inquiry, completed in 2023, adopted a markedly different approach to scientific and behavioural evidence. Commissioner Bathurst ultimately reached the "firm view" that "reasonable doubt exists as to Folbigg's guilt." 

This new edition extends the examination of the legal process, medical evidence, and normative expectations of motherhood. It evaluates law's fact-finding processes and the legal system's adherence to the principles of proof beyond a reasonable doubt, and raises concerns about how legal actors work with scientific uncertainty and assess women's credibility and demeanour.

It adds to the literature on resiliency from the perspective of the cultural and community well-being dimensions of sustainability and quality of life studies. The book begins by addressing the historical Indian and federal Government relationships over time and argues how land use and community planning has significant meaning and impacts for Indian reservations. It then explores the history of federal Indian law and its import to current issues in planning including the role of culture in planning. With a focus on southwestern tribes, the book also provides insight into the general status of planning efforts on Indian reservations and the issues encountered, asking questions such as what role does gaming play in economic development versus development of community and sustainable livability? It addresses the issues inherent in economic development in the absence of accountability. The authors provide an interdisciplinary context that integrates community planning, public policy, law and economic development in the context of sustainability.
