The American Revolution at 250

Twenty-Four Historians Reflect on the Founding

By the 1840s, many Americans recognized that the institution of slavery was destroying Southern landscapes while threatening to expand into the West. An increasing number of white Northerners believed that stopping slavery’s growth by surrounding areas where it was legal with so-called free soil would hasten its collapse and forestall an environmental crisis. James S. Finley addresses this understudied intersection of US antislavery and environmental politics in the two decades before the Civil War, arguing that the debate over free soil—what it should look like and who should have access to this land—was an under-recognized precursor of modern American environmentalist movements. Through the work of a group of Black writers and thinkers, the Free Soil movement’s white supremacist underpinnings were challenged by an eco-social vision that centered democratic communities and sustainable labor. By analyzing the output of authors who advocated for truly free soil, such as Frederick Douglass and Henry Highland Garnet, Finley finds commonalities in their attempts to reenvision communal relations between individuals and the land with contemporary movements for racial and environmental justice.

Land of Wild Magic - Das Flüstern der Bäume

In 1733, the edge of the world was a sandy cliff in Georgia known as Yamacraw Bluff.
For Moses Nunes, the voyage of the William and Sarah was more than a crossing of the Atlantic; it was a final escape from the long shadow of the Portuguese Inquisition. Behind him lay the stone cathedrals of Lisbon and the secret prayers of a family living in shadows. Before him lay a suffocating emerald wilderness where the air was thick with heat, disease, and the constant threat of Spanish steel.
While his father, the legendary Dr. Samuel Nunes, battles a deadly epidemic that threatens to extinguish the fledgling colony before the first hearth is even built, Moses finds his own purpose in the untamed "Green Labyrinth."
Gifted with the "Green Tongue," a rare ear for the music of indigenous languages, Moses becomes the vital bridge between General James Oglethorpe's European dreams and the ancient, sovereign reality of Chief Tomochichi's Yamacraw people. But as he helps carve Savannah's iconic squares out of the pines, he realizes that building a home requires more than just order-it requires a defiance of the status quo.
From the high-stakes diplomacy of the frontier to a forbidden and world-changing devotion to Mulatto Rose, The Sentinel of the Marsh is a sweeping historical epic. It is the story of a man who refused to be defined by the borders of his time, and a family legacy that would endure for centuries in the very soil of the South.

In My Skies of Small Horses, there are "no bone-hangers on which to drag your dress around." From one misread book title (Alice Notley's Mysteries of Small Houses) springs a collection of poems that gather horses, sheep, brassieres, Bukowski, fedoras, cotton balls and cotton swabs and cotton underwear under one rickety roof. Follow Celine as she sidles through each gamine room in search of a simple solution.

Cati Porter knows that the domesticsphere is a space full of knives, that a human is a zoo animal, andthat a lover is someone who holds your hair while you vomit. Withplenty o' nods to Plath and looking-glass Alice, the language in MySkies of Small Horses is like a steep spiral staircase with a velvetbannister, tricky and lush and twisting. It's a poetry of the"haunted, the unhung and moonsung, the run and the con."

-- Arielle Greenberg, author of Slice and My Kafka Century and co-editor of Gurlesque: the new grrly, burlesque, grotesque poetics

Cati Porter's My Skies of Small Horses revels in a domestic space that twists and morphs until a dystopic world isrevealed. The speaker persists through various trials with a feralpower that wreaks havoc on the ordinary. With language that is bothdaring and dazzling, she lets her survivalist mode kick in and laysclaim to this tumultuous realm where, "beneath the table, beneaththe chairs,/small horses take shelter:// I cross the field./I clap myhands./I want to see them run." A brilliant and vital collection!

Dopo Trump

A deep dive into the grit and glamor of America’s favorite criminal couple and the nation’s love affair with guns. On May 23, 1934, two borderline inept but ruthless criminals named Clyde Barrow and Bonnie Parker met their end in a hail of semiautomatic gunfire on a rural road in the Louisiana backcountry. The duo had terrorized Depression-era Middle America with a string of robberies and a brazen daylight prison escape, killing nearly a dozen police officers along the way. A legend was born. Thirty-two years later, a movie crew gathered on a Warner Bros. studio ranch to re-create the scene of Bonnie and Clyde’s violent demise. It was the end of a difficult shoot. Almost everyone involved knew they were on to something, but getting there had taken a toll on relationships both professional and personal. The result was destined to become what is arguably the landmark film of the New Hollywood era. Nothing like it had ever been attempted anything similar had, in fact, been forbidden by censorship. When the lights finally came up after an agonizing moment of black, Hollywood would never be the same. Almost sixty years since it exploded onto American screens, Bonnie and Clyde still retains the power to shock, amaze, and provoke, as fresh and relevant today as when it was first released in 1967. The movie’s resonance goes well beyond the peerless filmmaking of director Arthur Penn, producer-star Warren Beatty, and their talented team of collaborators. Bonnie and Clyde taps into a dark wellspring in the American psyche. Produced in a time of great social upheaval, with a country divided under a deeply polarizing president, the film addresses troubling questions about our country’s founding myth and its obsession with firearms, questions that remain part of our national debate. They Kill People is the story of the making of Bonnie and Clyde. It is the story of the outlaws whose real lives were anything but glamorous. Most of all, it is the story of how violence and a predilection for firearms became a fundamental part of American identity.

In an increasingly complex and interdependent world, international organizations are vital components of global governance and arenas for cooperation and norm-building and standard setting. At the same time, they accumulate and provide knowledge and expertise and act as implementing agents in areas ranging from sustainable development over security and beyond. The Handbook of International Organizations offers both a conceptual introduction to academic debates and a broad overview of the goals, tasks and effectiveness of global, regional and issue-specific international organizations. Expanding the scope of the first volume substantively, the book now includes chapters on XXX international organizations. Chapters in the first part discuss international organizations in relation to theoretical debates in the study of International Relations and the current global context. In the second, lexical part, chapters outline the evolution, operations and current challenges of individual international organizations and provide sources for further research. Students of International Relations and related fields will find a reliable source to consult for seminal information and current trends in international organizations research.

The loyalists of America and their times

One of The New York Times' 100 Best Books of the 21st Century. International bestseller. A Manual for Cleaning Women compiles the best work of the legendary short-story writer Lucia Berlin. One of The New York Times' 100 Best Books of the Twenty-First Century and a classic of short fiction, Lucia Berlin's A Manual for Cleaning Women was a global sensation upon its publication in 2015, eleven years after its author's death. Largely unheralded throughout her peripatetic life, Berlin was a fiction writer of staggering, singular genius. With the grit of Raymond Carver, the humor of Grace Paley, and a blend of wit and melancholy all her own, Berlin crafted miracles from the everyday, uncovering moments of grace in the Laundromats and halfway houses of the American Southwest, in the homes of the Bay Area upper class, among switchboard operators and struggling mothers, hitchhikers and bad Christians. Written over the course of thirty years, the forty-three stories in A Manual for Cleaning Women-collected here in a 10th anniversary edition-are short fiction at its most unforgettable and original, told with unmistakable style by a master of the form.
