Trust between the police and the communities they serve is fundamental to effective law enforcement, yet its erosion continues to challenge public safety worldwide. This edited volume examines community policing as an evolving paradigm in modern law enforcement, bringing together perspectives from scholars, practitioners, and researchers. Tracing its development from Sir Robert Peel's nineteenth-century policing principles to contemporary initiatives such as Kerala's Janamaithri Suraksha Project, the volume offers comparative perspectives from the United States, Japan, Singapore, Canada, and India.
The contributions critically examine established frameworks, including Broken Windows and Zero Tolerance theories, while assessing their relevance to the Indian context and advocating indigenous approaches responsive to local socio-economic conditions. The volume also explores practical dimensions of community policing, including victim-oriented policing, restorative justice, drug-crime prevention, tribal policing, and citizen-participation initiatives such as Friends of Police and Students in Responsible Police.

Designed for academics, policymakers, police professionals, and students of criminology, forensic science, sociology, and public administration, this volume provides a comprehensive and evidence-based understanding of community-oriented policing, its evolving practices, and its potential to strengthen police-community relationships and enhance public safety.

COMMUNITY POLICING AND CRIME PREVENTION - ISSUE AND PRACTICES

THE INSTANT SUNDAY TIMES BESTSELLER 'THE GOLD STANDARD OF NARRATIVE HISTORY' - DAN SNOWHow could a barely literate peasant from Siberia determine the fate of the world? Undoubtedly, the so-called 'mad monk' Rasputin bewitched Tsar Nicholas II and his wife, Alexandra. Yet their strange and scandalous relationship conceals a riddle, one that casts an intriguing light on the controversial 'great man' theory of history.Rasputin was a devoted monarchist, not a revolutionary. He had no official position, no forces at his command. Nevertheless, he contributed more to the fall of the Romanov dynasty than any other individual. So demoralised was the Tsarist officer corps by stories of corruption, to say nothing of the rumours of his debauchery with the Empress - and even her daughters - that when the February Revolution broke out, not a sword was raised in defence of the regime. Just as Rasputin cast a spell over the Romanovs, his legend has bewitched historians. More than a century later, we still fail to comprehend fully the collapse of the greatest autocracy on Earth. Was there any truth to the wild tales that brought down the empire? Or was his true legacy an unsettling lesson on the potency of myth?

And the Downfall of the Romanovs

Gender, Justice and Legal Feminism

This book presents the complex intersections of race, gender, and colonialism and their profound impact on the incarceration of First Nations women in Australia. By extending Kimberlé Crenshaw’s intersectional framework, it addresses the unique and often overlooked experiences of this population.
The book explores the intricate relationships between interpersonal, structural, and colonial violence, demonstrating how these forms of violence not only emerge from but also perpetuate existing power structures. By adapting Crenshaw’s lens to the specific context of First Nations women, it highlights the intersecting disadvantages of race, gender, and colonialism, offering a fresh and nuanced perspective on the issue of over-incarceration. Central to this analysis is the role of race. Using Critical Race Theory, the book underscores how racial dynamics are integral to understanding the over-incarceration of First Nations people. It also employs Feminist Legal Theory to scrutinize gender as a distinct point of disadvantage for First Nations women, distinguishing their experiences from those of First Nations men and the broader population.
The book argues that colonialism must be considered a critical factor in this context. Through the lens of Post-Colonial theory, it examines how colonial legacies continue to influence the over-incarceration of First Nations women. The carceral experiences of these women are situated at the intersections of systemic, colonial, and interpersonal violence, with themes such as biopolitics, necropolitics, and homo sacer providing a deeper understanding of their criminalization and incarceration.
By bringing together these diverse theoretical perspectives, the book offers a comprehensive and intersectional analysis of the over-incarceration crisis, shedding light on the unique challenges faced by First Nations women in Australia and advocating for more informed and equitable approaches to justice.

Crime Prevention and Security Management

This edited book provides a comprehensive study of punitive practices in modern-day Lithuania, highlighting its significance as a democratic European state navigating the continuing consequences of its Soviet-era criminal justice system. Punitive attitudes and practices are explored through a thematic framework, examining their socio-political, cultural, and historical contexts. Part I traces the cultural, psychological, and historical origins of punishment, highlighting the influence of collective memory and transitional reforms on penal debates. Part II examines the uneven application of criminal justice, showing how it unfairly punishes marginalised and disadvantaged communities. Part III explores advancements in probation, imprisonment, crime prevention, and victim support, showing how reforms can become both symbolic and oppressive. The book offers various criminological viewpoints that contribute to policy discussions about reducing excessive punishment, exploring alternatives, and promoting meaningful justice reform. This vital resource supports the work of scholars in criminology, sociology, law, and related fields focused on social justice and democratic reform.

A Punitive Society?

Understanding Crime Control and Punishment in Lithuania

&nbsp;

Crime doesn't just pay, it tells. What we choose to ban, penalise or prosecute says something about us; and how far the mobsters and mafias are still able to ply their trades says something about us, too.Homo Criminalis tells a thrilling tale of the world's changing values, the rise of the state and the emergence of modern society, through the evolution of the underworld and its crimes. From Chinese banditry and eighteenth-century English tea smuggling to today's cocaine submarines and the high-tech crimes of tomorrow, this book aims to shows just how far society has changed - and how crime has changed with us.Often considered marginal or an aberration, we'll see how the power structures and power struggles of the criminal world have actually worked to drive progress, forming the necessary dark underbelly of humanity's evolution.

The story of American history is often told as a hard-won march toward the promise of equality, derived from Thomas Jefferson's famous proclamation that "all men are created equal."But this inspiring story obscures a parallel tradition: an enduring and organized argument against equality itself. Again and again, influential Americans have asserted a fundamental inequality among human beings, arguing that the social, economic, and racial hierarchies in which some groups of people rule over others are not only natural but good.In Country of Lords acclaimed historian Kim Phillips-Fein traces this argument for inequality through six vivid archetypes. She discusses the natural aristocrats, such as John Adams, who feared the tumult of too much democracy; the social Darwinists, led by Yale professor William Graham Sumner, who blamed the poor for their own miseries; those who preached a gospel of production, including Henry Ford, who wanted an industrial hierarchy in which the "best" people ruled over compliant inferiors; utilitarian racists who advocated for eugenics and a racial hierarchy; meritocrats like Harvard psychologist Richard Hernstein who described an economic caste system based on "intelligence" in his co-authored book, The Bell Curve; and most recently, technocrats who seem to see themselves as superior because they are closest to the machines destined to outstrip and supplant fallible flesh-and-blood humanity. The anti-egalitarian lineage Phillips-Fein traces is both clear and deeply unsettling. It challenges readers to think about the fragility of the ideal of equality and to reckon with the disturbing arguments of those who have campaigned against it over the past two and a half centuries. Country of Lords is essential reading for anyone trying to make sense of the widening gap between the nation we claim to be and the nation we are becoming.

Does parole have a future? If it does, can we begin to imagine a different path? Is progressive penal reform possible, or has the time come to consider more radical alternatives in a context where there is little, if any, consensus on the underlying aims and techniques of contemporary prison release? What does this all mean for the prisoners, families, victims and publics upon whose confidence the parole system ultimately depends? This book brings together a world-leading panel of 27 experts who draw upon insights from law, sociology, criminology and political science to explore these pressing questions. At a time when many parole systems are experiencing considerable strain, the aims of this collection are twofold: first, to encourage systematic and critical reflection on the rationalities, institutions and practices of parole. Second, to think big, and pose ambitious 'what if' questions about the possible futures of parole and prison release. Offering novel insights from Asia, Australia, Europe, North America and South America, this collection builds the case for, and then showcases, a 'way of doing' parole research that is global in outlook, interdisciplinary in approach and unapologetically normative in character.
