Placeness and the Performative Production of Space

Apuleius' De Mundo ('On the Cosmos') has never been published in English translation. One reason for this may be that it has itself been viewed as a mere translation of a work that survives in the Aristotelian corpus, the Peri Kosmou (traditionally, but confusingly in this context, referred to as the De Mundo). But greater sensitivity both to the ideological implications of 'translation' (no translation is ever a 'mere' translation) and to the nuanced philosophical debates of the second century CE ought already to suggest that the work will have a lot to teach us-and all the more just because we have the Greek text it is working with. This volume offers the first English translation of the De Mundo, which it presents in parallel with a new English translation of the Aristotelian Peri Kosmou by the same team, so that even readers without Latin or Greek can get a keen sense of how the two works relate-and how substantially they diverge. It is accompanied by a series of ten new scholarly studies introducing the work and setting out a broad range of approaches to its study. Together they make a powerful case that the De Mundo is deeply informed by Apuleius' Platonism, especially a view of providence which differs substantially from that of the Peri Kosmou, and that it is an important text for understanding philosophical debate in the second century CE.

At the beginning of the 20th century, modern science asserted that only matter really exists. Science, philosophy, and culture declared the victory of materialism over all other worldviews. The contemporary world was formatted according to the software of materialism, coupled with Darwinism, capitalism, individualism, and consumerism. This system engendered the infernal cycle of over-exploitation, over-production, and over-consumption, with many negative consequences. After a century of exponential development, contemporary science is now asserting: Matter doesn't really exist. Different interpretations of contemporary physics, as well as the union of the quantum revolution and the information processing revolution, are leading to the revolutionary conclusion that the universe is not made up of matter or material objects but of energy - understood as activity and complex information-processing systems or agents.

There may exist something like the most unbearable of all philosophical thoughts. It is the thought of contingency and universality converging, intersecting, and being one and the same thing, approached from two different perspectives. Hardly anything is as unsettling as the insight into the absolute contingency of the emergence of universals, and the correlative realization that the only true universality is one of the contingency of everything. The goal of this book is to think this unbearable thought through to the end and face up to its most binding and disconcerting consequences. The history of science is full of theoretical unifications of two previously mutually exclusive concepts or two opposite realms (natural and unnatural motion in Galilei, terrestrial and celestial physics in Newton, man and animal in Darwin, electricity and magnetism in Maxwell, mass and energy, space and time, acceleration and gravity in Einstein, etc.). This book is based on the conjecture that what philosophy is lacking is a similar unification of the concepts of "contingency" and "universality." The book will thereby try to accomplish an operation that is implicit in the philosophy of Slavoj Zizek. In doing so, it will provide new answers to questions on the nature of contingency, necessity, predictability of the future, the validity of the laws of nature, the role of singularity in relation to universality, chaos and order, reality and truth. These answers will differ starkly from the ones advocated by contemporary philosophers such as Badiou, Meillassoux, some other speculative realists, and some analytical philosophers of science.

If in its simplest form, hermeneutics is a quest for understanding, then part of that quest will always include striving to understand being and the meaning of being. This open access book takes that ambition seriously, arguing that hermeneutics and metaphysics, so central to philosophical thought but so rarely put in tandem, are two complementary fundamentals of human existence. Metaphysical Hermeneutics puts forward the argument for a hermeneutical metaphysics in service of philosophy's basic aim: to make sense of our experience. Jean Grondin builds his argument for this combined discipline around the idea of 'sense' - a theme that is both hermeneutical and metaphysical. What we seek to glimpse is not just a figment of the mind but always the meaning of something. Grondin calls on one of the founding figures of contemporary hermeneutics Hans-Georg Gadamer to test his theories, singling out the metaphysical dimension of Gadamer's ideas and questioning his seeming embrace and rejection of that dimension. Rooting these questions in the human search for meaning is a major contribution to the scope and resources of hermeneutic philosophy.
